K/1 st Grade Feb 3 Jesus Feeds the 5,000 Bible Verse Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. (Mark 6:41-42) Teacher Enrichment This is the fourth lesson in the New School: Moments from Jesus Life series which explores scripture lessons from Jesus life on earth. As both human and divine, Jesus is our best example of what God wants us to be like as humans. This series examines how Jesus lived and the choices He made for His life. As Jesus went from city to city preaching about God, healing people and serving those in need He became very popular. (Think the Beatles circa Everyone knew they were great, but if you could see them in person, well, that was the ticket.) When we meet Jesus on a mountain side, He has gathered a crowd of over 5,000 people which is great and wonderful and amazing until it s time to eat. The disciples react as we probably would and suggest they let everyone fend for themselves. After all, there s no way they can possible feed this many people on such short notice and with little funds. But Jesus has other plans. He takes a small boy s lunch and turns it into a feast for all and everyone s needs are met. Serving a crowd in need is a formidable task. If we are asked to do it, we often stand there with our two fish and our five little loaves of bread and wonder how they can possibly help the situation. Or we wonder what will be left for us if we give away the little we have. Do we really have enough money or food or time? That is the moment when we must trust God to provide what is needed. When we give, our blessings are multiplied, often in ways we never anticipated. In this lesson children will learn that Jesus provides for our needs. They will explore ways God provides for them and ways they can provide for others.
Before Class Begins Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival. Place the Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards and pens where students can see them upon arrival. Check that you have supplies for this lesson: Arrival Activity, Loaves and Fish Coloring Page 1 per child Baskets Brown Paper Bags White plastic bags Newspaper Rubber Bands Paper plates 1 per child Loaves & Fish basket cutouts 1 per child Place an arrival activity at each place on the table. Welcome SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards, Attendance chart, stickers, pens, Loaves and Fish coloring page, crayons, Measuring chart, sharpie Greet each child individually as they arrive. Introduce yourself by name. Help children find or add their name on the attendance chart. Provide each child with a sticker to place in today s column on the attendance chart. Encourage children to complete a Joy or Concern card if they have a particular joy or concern they would like to express. Collect completed Joy & Concern cards. Encourage children to complete a Time or Talent offering card if they gave their time to God or used their talents to serve God or others during the previous week. Children should keep their own completed Time and Talent cards. If children bring monetary offering, they should keep it with them. Direct children to complete Loaves and Fish coloring page. Encourage conversation among the children and with you! Get to know the children in your classroom by asking about their week including school, activities and families. Introduce new children to each other and encourage friendships.
Children s Worship SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards The Children s Worship Leader will direct your class to come to Ruth Hall at 9:20 or 11:05. Bring the Sign In sheet and completed Joy & Concern cards to Ruth Hall. Hand the Joy & Concern cards to the Children s Worship leader as you arrive. Have children bring their completed Time & Talent cards and any monetary offering. If additional children arrive while in Ruth Hall, have parents complete the Sign In sheet and remind parents that pickup is in Room 107. Encourage children to participate in Children s Worship and provide re-direction if necessary. Assist the Children s Worship leader as needed. At the conclusion of Children s Worship, have children line up and return to Room 107. The Lesson SUPPLIES: Baskets, newspaper, white plastic bags, brown paper bags, rubber bands, paper plates, Loaves & Fish basket cutouts, crayons, glue Gather all the children in a circle on the carpet. As you are able, sit on the floor with them or use a chair as part of the circle. Have the basket of supplies next to you. SAY: In today s story, some people were really hungry. But there wasn t any food for them. We learned how Jesus took a small amount of food and turned it into a HUGE amount of food. ASK: Who remembers what Jesus started with? (Five loaves and two fish) SAY: I bet those five loaves of bread and two fish would not have taken up very much space. I bet they would have fit in a small basket like I have here. All of the supplies we need for today s lesson fit in this basket. Jesus didn t need much space for the items He started with and neither do we.
SAY: But I wonder if we could turn this one basket of supplies into many baskets of loaves and fish? Could we try? Demonstrate how to make a loaf and how to make a fish. Loaf Crumple newspaper to fill paper bag. Fold over or twist end. Fish Crumple newspaper and stuff into white plastic bag. Leave about 6 inches for the tail and add rubber band. Assist children in making as many loaves and fish as they can in the time allowed (leave enough time for each child to make at least one loaf and one fish) Place the loaves and fish in the other baskets as you make them. SAY: Wow! We made so many loaves and fish! Look at how full all our baskets are! We started with this one small basket of supplies and we were able to fill X number of baskets with loaves and fish! Amazing! SAY: I bet the people who were with Jesus that day were just as amazed when He started with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and was able to feed over 5,000 people! Jesus is able to take a small amount and multiply it into many, many blessings. SAY: Today we are going to make a plate of 5 loaves and 2 fish to remind us that Jesus started with a little and multiplied it into much! Show children sample craft. Provide each child with a paper plate and a Loaves and Fish basket cutout. Direct children to color and cutout the loaves, fish and basket handles and then glue them to their paper plate. Basket handles can be stapled if desired. Closing Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the children to say a prayer or use the one below. God,
Thank you for always providing enough for us. Help us follow Jesus example and help others in need. Amen If time remains before parents arrive, encourage children to return to their Loaves and Fish coloring page if they did not complete it. Also encourage conversation between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom!
