October 7 th is World Communion Sunday and we will accept the special offering for the 2018 Peace & Global Witness. Plans are being made for the church school program. The Christian Education Committee is excited to welcome all of our children and youth back on September 9 for the outdoor service and picnic. Sunday School classes will officially begin on September 16th. At this time, the nursery will be staffed by volunteers from Faith until Rosemary Miller is able to return. Please let Robin Nemser know if you would like to volunteer one Sunday a month in the nursery. We will be using the Whole People of God curriculum again this year for our pre-k to middle school children and youth. The online lessons are very easy to access and provide all you need for a meaningful experience. You will be greatly rewarded if you sign up to teach one of the groups! Our classes this year will be as follows: PreK-1st ( classroom nearest the sanctuary) 2nd 5th (2nd upstairs classroom) 6th- 9th (1st upstairs classroom)

September 30 Five Things You Can Do to Live Longer We have wonderful children at Faith Church and we can t wait to begin another church year with them. Children are encouraged to bring friends to church and church school. All are welcome! Adult Nurture Sundays at 9:30 in Woodmont Room September 23 Cuba Mission Dr. Mozella Williams is a member of Faith Church and a board certified family medicine physician and the medical director for CHI Health Care. Dr. Williams helps patients navigate the western medical system of surgery, hospitalizations, referrals, and medications as well as more natural, integrative health approaches. She is committed to improving health care disparity. Mozella has a passion for medical education and for several years served as an Assistant Professor and the Associate Director of Medical Student Education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. WORSHIP & THE ARTS Come help us! Randal Woodfield, chair Lauren Hill and Anna Burns will discuss their spring trip to Cuba and present a slide show of their photos. Cuba is an important mission of Faith. You won t want to miss this. On Sunday, August 19, 2018, the Worship & Arts committee had a very productive meeting, making plans for upcoming special events in our church. We have, of course, our annual Homecoming Sunday on September 9 th and will enjoy the music of the Mount Ararat Boys (featuring our own Mike Shirey) and the preaching of our own Dr. Karen Brown. It promises to be a great day of worship and fellowship held outdoors on the south lawn. A potluck picnic will follow worship please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

4 - 4 - Our observance of communion on September 2 nd will be a unique service in which the entire service is centered on the Lord s Supper. There will be readings and hymns, all leading us to focus our attention on the elements and the meaning of this important rite in the practice of our faith. Various members of our church family will participate and Rev. Bill Millen will officiate. Woodbourne McCabe Camp By Susan Minor During the last full week of July several Faith members were actively involved with a group of very active youth at the McCabe Camp. After surviving some weather issues, i.e., lots of rain the first two days, we met with about youth at the Alhambra Park for fun and games. Other events discussed include World Communion Sunday, All Saints Day, and even Advent and Christmas. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, September 16. Our meetings are open to anyone who has an interest in having input into our planning. Krislund Camp Each day, great lunches were provided by volunteers from Maryland Presbyterian Church and our own, Judy Sperling. Nine teenagers and four adults from a Presbyterian church outside of Philadelphia joined us to further enrich the experience. These nine youth acted out our daily passages, making them more meaningful for the children at camp. Dear Faith Presbyterian Church, Thank you for inviting Krislund to your church for the Traveling Day Camp. Each person we encountered was an amazing example of kindness and devotion to the fruits of the Spirit. We are extremely grateful for your support and time. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the campers, and watching them grow throughout the week. It was a pleasure to be at Faith. May God bless you all. The Krislund Traveling Day Camp Staff We were able to get to know many of the neighborhood kids through science, art, games, and music--art projects such as

5 - 5 - Black Panther puppets were made. We played goofy games such as sweeping balloons into boxes and trying to put on frozen t-shirts. Small group activities were designed to help the children use their skills to work together toward a common goal. Each day's activities were based on a particular Bible passage and further explored through some outstanding children's literature. Thanks to Bill Millen, who faithfully came twice each day to help put up and then take down our tents, and to Ileana Martinez- Castillo who worked with different groups of kids and stayed for the 2'nd two weeks of camp. And thank you Judy for the great food and for helping with groups of kids!

6 - 6 - Baltimore Presbytery Search Process for Pastors The Presbyterian Book of Order is a wondrous work. I would not suggest that it rivals the Magna Carta, but it s right up there! It leaves no stone unturned. It crosses all t s and dots all i s. Really! And it is dynamic, i.e. periodically it gets revised to reflect its awareness of the changing times. It s quite a read, but there are no pictures. It s all text, so beware! Our especial interest in it is, of course, the title of this article, which is hopefully helped somewhat in its consumption by the accompanying Flow Chart. Twenty-four boxes are required to conclude the Presbytery s Search Process for a permanent Pastor over the coming year. Might the question on your minds be where ARE we? And our answer is that we have arrived in box SIX! Your Interim Pastor Search Committee over the past two months since its appointment has been weathering summer vacations that have deterred to some degree our progress, but now that everyone is back in action, including those with whom we interface in the Baltimore Presbytery, we have received approval to interview one candidate. graphically to you that the process is only in its early stages. The IPSC has the key word SEARCH in its title. The Committee on Worship s representative guiding us though this amazeing process has confirmed that we may seek counsel from Session and HR chair and we know that they will offer their advice as requested. To that end, our Human Resource Chairperson, Paula Burger, has contributed greatly to this article! The IPSC s responsibility pales in comparison to the Pastor Nominating Committee who must get us from Box 6 to Box 24 over whatever period is required to ensure Faith the kind of pastoral leadership the congregation deserves. And, in the shorter term, your IPSC is determined to identify an Interim Pastor who will add value during this transition process and help us to do much more than mark time. We expect during this interim to keep growing in our collective endeavors and in our personal faith journeys. Onward! Keep the Faith! We are! As the word gets around, we feel confident that there will be an adequate number of those seeking an Interim Pastor position for us to recommend to our Session and to our Human Resource Chairperson that candidate whom we feel would be ideal to lead Faith Church though its period of Transition. Pastor begins ministry Congregation elects Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) PNC prepares the Ministry Information Form (MIF) and publicizes position Presbytery, or COM on behalf of Presbytery, approves Call. PNC Screens candidates and conducts interviews. Submits short list to the General Presbyter Candidating Service; Congregation votes to call new Pastor "If the way be clear by Presbytery" Face to Face Interviews, neutral pulpits. PNC extends invitation to candidate and negotiates terms of call Final candidate interviews with Presbytery s Credentials Team; team approves terms of call, recommends call to COM

For more information contact Pat Nesbitt Cuba Partnership Every two years the Presbytery of Baltimore and El Centro Presbytery in Cuba co-sponsor the Encuentro (meeting or gathering) for churches who either have partnerships or who are considering partnerships and want to visit and learn more. The 2019 Encuentro will be held February 15-22, Cost is $1200 all-inclusive and deadline to register and pay deposit is November 1st. Some scholarship money is available. Be Sure of Divine Love By Maceo Williams God said Jesus is God s most beloved son of whom God is well pleased. God loves us so much that he gave his beloved son to be our Good Shepherd to guide and to take care of us. I appreciation God s love, God s son will protect us from harm. 10 RESTORING OUR WATERSHEDS USING NATIVE PLANTS: An Evening with Doug Tallamy Please join us at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church on September 25 at 7 p.m. for a very special evening with Doug Tallamy, nationally renowned expert on the benefits of restoring our landscapes, bird populations, and pollinators using native plants. Tallamy will present his highly regarded lecture about the many ways home gardeners and institutions alike can make great strides in restoring the Chesapeake Bay Watershed by becoming more aware of the relationships between plants, birds, insects, and local habitats. This talk is open to the public. Thanks to a generous grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, this event is free of charge, though donations to the church Green Team will be gratefully accepted.
