1 At A Glance WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF PENFIELD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OCTOBER 3, 2018 There will be a congregational meeting on Sunday Oct 14th at 9:45 am for the election of two elders, who will then be installed during worship. World Communion Sunday offers us a unique opportunity to experience the Lord s Supper in the context of the global community of faith. On this day Christians around the world break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Jesus as our cornerstone. On this day, we reflect and remember that we are part of the whole body of believers. Whether shared in a grand cathedral, a mud hut, outside on a hilltop, in a meetinghouse, or in a storefront, we celebrate the shared communion liturgy in as many ways as there are congregations. As conflicts arise and divisions appear between people and nations, our World Communion celebration takes on greater meaning as a unifying force. Join us for Worship with Communion at 10:00 followed by a Potluck Lunch. Come One and All In addition to our regular offering, a Peace and Global Witness Offering will be collected. This is one of four special offerings designated by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) s General Assembly. The offering goes to local, regional, and national efforts to live out Christ s call to be peacemakers in the world. Our portion of the offering will be shared with Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center. 3 Thanks to all who came and assisted with our welcome dinner for Amal Nassar, our International Peacemaker. Her message of faith, hope and love resounds with us. The family motto, as seen inscribed on a rock at the entrance of the farm, says so much about their inspiring work. Monies have been donated for the Tent of Nations. We will be sending a check at the end of October. If you wish to contribute, you can do so by dropping a check (payable to PPC) in the mail or offering plate. Please note Tent of Nations in the memo line. SUNDAY ADULT EDUCATION The Sunday Adult Education class is viewing and discussing a Great Courses DVD lecture series Jesus and His Jewish Influences. The lecturer is Jodi Magness, Ph.D., Professor of Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Because of the Worldwide Communion Pot Luck, there will be no class on Sunday, October 7. The next class will be on Sunday, October 14. The lecture will be The Destruction of Solomon s Temple dealing with the reign and death of King Josiah, the meaning of Armageddon, the destruction of the first Temple, and the Babylonian Exile. The class meets after worship at 11:30 in Room 4. Everyone from 16 to 66 plus is welcome. For further information, please see Charles Griffith.

4 Safe Ministries Update: In the on-going introduction of our revised Safe Ministries Policy, we would like to share what the Preamble states: The purpose of this Policy is to ensure that Penfield Presbyterian Church (PPC) is the safest place it can be for all persons who participate in worship, organization, child care, church school, and all other activities for which the Church is responsible. The safety of all, especially children, will take priority over the interests of all other parties in this Policy. This Policy is designed to prevent sexual abuse involving touching or physical activity and/or verbal/non-verbal communication of a sexual nature with children and youth; This protection also includes adults who are at risk or vulnerable due to various conditions (including but not limited to ambulatory, vision or hearing disabilities) or supervisory/controlling relationships. More broadly, these provisions apply to harassment of any nature, including verbal or physical. This Policy is further designed to ensure physical safety, related to potential hazards, including but not limited to medical emergencies, accidents, fire, violent activity, or drug-related concerns, i.e., any events that threaten the spiritual, emotional, mental, or physical well-being of those using PPC facilities.
