2 PASTORAL CHAT My dear readers, 1. Jordan ministry report In 2001 when our mission to Jordan began, we were glad to have the services of Brother and Mrs Chee Khuen Wah. After 10 years of fruitful ministry, the economic situation has changed, the factories are closing down and Chinese workers are no longer coming, Rev Chee and wife are in the process of rethinking their future ministry. Their latest report is printed for readers information and prayer. Will you please remember them daily before God s throne of grace? (The Chees letter follows). 2. Update on Jordan Ministry 2012 Dear brethren and prayer partners, Greetings to all of you in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we enter the 11th year of our ministry (which is also our final year in Jordan), we look back on how the Lord has led us through thick and thin. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and praise for His grace and mercy. In retrospect, we recall some unforgettable events: a) Fatal road accident It happened in September 2002 when six Chinese workers were killed and 14 injured in a road accident. Among the death-roll, 2 were our sisters attending the church. Though we were devastated, the Lord touched hearts and many accepted Christ. b) The Iraq war It occurred the following year in 2003 when the US attacked Iraq and stirred up great fear in Jordan especially among the Chinese working in the garment factories of Irbid, Sahab and Karak. Nevertheless, we decided to stay put in Jordan to encourage the believers by sharing God s Word. Eventually it brought much comfort and peace to the Chinese believers. c) Interrogation by the Ministry of Interior In 2008, an Egyptian Pastor tried reaching out to the Muslims openly and it alarmed the Authority. As a result, he was expelled. Many foreigners in Jordan were called up, we included. I was interrogated for almost 2 hours and was threatened with imprisonment. Inwardly I was frightened and I thought that was going to be the end of our Jordan ministry. However, we were released the following day. Thank God for His intervention. d) Dwindling number of Chinese workers The strength of our congregation in Jordan Chinese Church has dwindled, reason being many factories have difficulties hiring workers from China, hence they began employing cheaper laborers from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.

3 Many of the Chinese believers have returned to China after their contracts expired. Presently, we have less than 20 in Irbid, 2 in Sahab and 10 in Karak. e) Sudden death of our missionary friend The recent news (as follows) has indeed brought shock and caused us to be dumbfounded: AMMAN Police on Friday announced the arrest of a 16-year-old who reportedly stabbed and killed an American teacher in Irbid Governorate last week. We knew the American teacher as a missionary from USA who has been living in Jordan for more than 20 years. She was attending the Irbid Baptist Church where we held our services for the Chinese believers. We attended her memorial service. Life indeed is like a vapour that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away We need to live fully for Christ in our daily lives and to do whatever the Lord wants us to do. f) Ministry in the future As the ministry in Jordan is winding down, I have been approached by the following: 1. Dr SH Tow: After reading the Jordan report about the dwindling Chinese workers last Oct, he ed me to consider serving in Pandan Chinese congregation. I did not accept his offer because the Chinese believers in Jordan still required our pastoral care. 2. Rev Pang Kok Hiong: He called me early January this year to consider serving with him in Pandan Chinese service on a rotational basis, i.e he suggested that both of us take turns to go for overseas missions, but I did not accept. f) Advice by Elder Choong (of Calvary Pandan) When we were in Singapore in July attending the funeral of Siew Eng s father, we met Elder Choong and he advised us to write to the Pandan Session concerning our new plan. I did that. In reply, Pastor Quek Suan Yew asked me whether there was any possibility for the work in China to continue from Singapore, and I have sincerely declined. As the Lord has laid upon our hearts for the mainland Chinese, we will move on to China (after the Jordan ministry ends in early November 2012) to continue ministering to the Jordan returnees, God willing. Just as Capernaum was the base for our Lord Jesus when He moved in Galilee to preach the Gospel, likewise we intend to stay in Taiwan and minister to the brethren in China. We covet your prayers. Please pray for Brother Patrick Liow, pray that God will grant him grace and strength to go through with his next stage of treatment in October. 5. Pray for the Uni students as they will be sitting for their exam in a few weeks time. 6. Pray for the spiritual and physical wellbeing of all members and worshippers. 7. Pray for safety and security in and around the church.
