2 Lessons from the Life of Maltbie Davenport Babcock By Dn Ronnie Tan Who was Maltbie Davenport Babcock? He was probably not as wellknown as Charles Spurgeon or D.L Moody were. Mention his name and many will probably say, I ve never heard of him before. Herein lies the answer Babcock was the writer of the hymn This is My Father s World. In Protestant circles, the hymn This is My Father s World is probably one of the best-loved hymns. It was published in 1901 but was probably written a little earlier by Babcock. The first two stanzas contain references to God s creation, such as rocks and trees, of skies and seas ; birds morning light, the lily white rustling grass bear testimony to this assertion. It was probably during his morning walks to the top of a hill near Lake Ontario where he had a full view of the lake and the surrounding countryside, that he was inspired to pen this hymn. It was said that his frequent expression before he went out for these walks was, I m going out to see my Father s world! Indeed, this expression underscores his deep admiration for nature and probably his awareness that God speaks through His creation. Born in 1858, Babcock was a talented man. He graduated from Syracuse University with the highest honours at the age of 21. Apart from being a good sportsman, Babcock became recognised as one of the outstanding Presbyterian ministers of his generation. He was also a very good speaker and accomplished musician, for he could play the piano, organ and violin. However, his life was not without tragedy; both his children died in infancy. Babcock did not live long either, for he died at the age of 42 in Italy due to brucellosis, a type of bacterial infection.

3 Despite his short life, God used Babcock to fulfill His purpose through him. Such was his gift for music that he could have become a professional musician. Instead, he chose to answer the call to the full-time ministry, where he soon became a much sought-after preacher of God s word. In other words, he chose to love Christ first, not the world. (1 John 2:15-17) What are the lessons that we can learn from Babcock s short life? For one, Babcock used his gifts to serve the Lord. Indeed, God gave each of us different gifts. Just as there are many different parts of a body and have different functions, all of us can give our talents for the Lord s use. He also used his talents to be a blessing to others. In this regard, we too can use our talents to serve others instead of keeping them to ourselves. In fact, the parable of the talents in the gospels reminds us that we should not keep them but to multiply them. Finally, Babcock died young but for nearly half his life, he made it count for God. His admirable dedication to the Lord s work is certainly worth emulating. We will not know how long God will let us live on this earth. We may not be as brilliant or as gifted as Babcock but that should not deter us from serving God and being a channel of blessing to those around us while He gives us the time and ability to do so because in so doing, we are actually doing serving the Lord. (Matt 25:24-30) While he gives us breath in our nostrils, may we do our best to serve Him, for asthe words of the poet C.T. 6 What did He pray for? God's Glory vv 1,4 and 5 Jesus' prayer: Unselfish - "...glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: " v1 Being glorified = His death,burial and resurrection. The Father is glorified, when the Son of God is glorified The Lord's prayer Focus is always on Triune God. " After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. ( The Father's name be hallowed ) Thy kingdom come. ( The soon coming Kingdom of Christ) Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (The will of the Spirit be done) Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen." Matthew 6:9-13 b. Beyond the Cross is Glory The focus is on the Glory of God.From start to finish, the theme is the glory of God He came from glory. John 17:5 He glorified God.John 17:4 He gave His glory to believers John 17:22 He is glorified in them John 17:10 Is Christ glorified in church, our homes and our work place? Behold His glory, one day D. The People " I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine." John 17:9 Jesus, our Lord is not praying for the world but for His church. The invisible Church of God Who is the Church?
