4 PRAISELINES 25 NOV 2018 By Grace Alone (Reflec4ons on Gala4ans by Gabriel) The study of Gala4ans begun with Apostle Paul s lever to the Gala4ans. Paul s calling as an apostle was not from man nor was it through man. It did not originate with man and it didn t come through man. Paul s apostleship originated with God and came directly from God. At that 4me, Paul received news that there were false teachers confusing Gen4le believers with a different message. A group of Judaizers who sought to make a living under the Mosaic Law had gained an influence in the Gala4an churches. These false teachers proclaimed a gospel with Jewish condi4ons avached. They argued that salva4on was incomplete if one only had faith in Jesus without adherence to the law, par4cularly circumcision. This false teaching set human works on equal foo4ng with God s work of sending Jesus Christ to die on the cross. The Gala4an believers were rapidly deser4ng Paul and his gospel. Paul s character and credibility were also undermined as the Gala4ans made clear of their disloyalty to Paul s authority as an apostle. The Gala4ans had gone back to keeping the law and were trying to be jus4fied by the works of the law although they had been jus4fied in Christ. Paul realized this was dangerous for man and it was insul4ng to God. Therefore, the purpose of Paul s lever was to address these concerns immediately. Faith + Anything = Nothing. In today s 4me, the tempta4on is always present for us to see some form of law keeping as the way to get right with God or to stay right with God. More oaen than not, I fall into thinking that by keeping the Ten Commandments or upholding certain ethical standards, I am able to get right with God and God is bound to accept us in the end. Paul points out that we cannot rebuild what we have already destroyed. By trus4ng in Christ for our righteousness, we have completely abandoned the path of law-keeping. We are to realize that we are unable to please an awe-inspiring God of pure holiness with our human efforts of keeping the law. All of us have fallen short before our Holy God as a consequence of our sins and that only Christ can save us. As Chris4ans, we have already abandoned the law as a means of being right before God and we have died to it. That part of us has been crucified with Christ and our new life with Christ is lived out through our life by trus4ng and having faith in him. The law merely tells us how to get right with God, but it definitely will not be able to save us. When we avempt to add law-keeping to faith, we are destroying what faith is all about. In the first place, the purpose of the law, given by God, was to restrain and educate the people in the past. It was to put a brake on sinfulness and set boundaries which God s people could live by un4l Christ came. In today s world, law keeping is s4ll avrac4ve as it is tangible. It allows us to keep track of what we did or did not do, providing us with a gauge of our own standards. With these standards, some people might feel a sense of assurance as they compare themselves with others. However, the law was a temporary measure but now that Christ has came, the law is no longer in charge. We are no longer slaves to the law but sons and heirs to Christ. The gospel of God s grace in Christ has freed us from the slavery of the law. We no longer need to try and please God by through our human ac4ons and works. Paul used the story of Hagar and Sarah to represent slavery under law-keeping versus freedom under the gospel. The story of Hagar and Ishmael highlights human ini4a4ve and how one will always be under the slavery of the law. It represents the Old Covenant where the law is present and circumcision is emphasized, therefore resul4ng in no form of inheritance. On the contrary, the story of Sarah and Isaac highlights divine ini4a4ve through God s promise. It represents the New Covenant of believing in God and trus4ng in His promises with the inheritance of promise, grace and freedom in Christ. Therefore, we as Chris4ans and children of God are to realize that our salva4on is from grace alone through faith and not through our works of following a list of dos and don ts so as to achieve holiness. 4

9 THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 25 NOV 2018 What is the Holy Communion? Look up in thanksgiving to God Look back to Jesus body broken and blood shed for us on the cross (1 Cor 11:23-25) Holy Communion Look forward to Jesus return (1 Cor 11:26) Look within as we reflect on our behaviour towards the body of Christ purchased by his blood (1 Cor 11:27-29) Look around to our participation with Christ and the unity of God s people (1 Cor 10:16-17) All Christians may partake in the Holy Communion. We take the bread and cup in remembrance of Jesus (Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:26-29). How so? Well, the Holy Communion is essentially a visual display of the gospel in these ways: - it shows our relationship with God (1 Cor 11:25 - it reminds us of God's covenant, or promise, first given to Abraham and renewed in Jesus) - it pictures Jesus' death to restore us to God, his body broken and blood shed for us on the cross (1 Cor 11:23-25) - it awaits Jesus' return (1 Cor 11:26) - it is to be taken by those with a respectful and believing attitude towards Jesus' death for us (1 Cor 11:27-29) - it represents our unity with Christ and with one another as God's people (1 Cor 10:16-17, 1 Cor 11:33-34) So, next Sunday, as we come to the Holy Communion: let's prepare our hearts and minds, trusting in Christ alone, not in whether we have been "good enough". Christ has already made us right with God. If there is sin in our lives, let s confess our sin to God and change, being confident that the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin let's seek reconciliation if we have broken fellowship with and/or acted wrongly towards any brother or sister in Christ
