This series, we ll learn how we can amplify the things that God wants us to. How can we turn up the volume of things like goodness, patience, joy, and love in our lives? 3 Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued) : Goodness What does it mean to be good? Does it just mean following the rules and doing what you re told? That s a part of goodness, but when it s amplified, goodness is way more exciting than that. Goodness turns life into an adventure, where you have a chance to change someone s world every day. Few stories show this better than the parable Jesus told of the good Samaritan. He understood that goodness isn t just about him. The greatest kind of goodness is about how we treat others! Lesson 2: Kindness and Gentleness When the kid in this week s story set out to see Jesus, he probably didn t think he would do anything incredible. When people started to get hungry, the boy offered his lunch, a meal of bread and fish, to Jesus. What Jesus did through this one act of kindness is amazing! In the same way, God works through our kindness today to do incredible things. How could your kindness make a difference this week? Lesson 3: Patience and Self-Control Waiting isn t always easy. It s especially hard when things go wrong, or when we have to wait on someone else. That s when having patience means also using self-control. Samson, one of the judges of Israel, had a problem with both patience and self-control. From pulling dangerous pranks with foxes and fire, to attacking when people solved a riddle he thought up, Samson s life can show us what happens without this fruit. Lesson 4: Faithfulness Romans 12:15 says Be joyful with those who are joyful. Be sad with those who are sad. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for someone is to just stick around. Ruth is an incredible example of a person who knew how powerful being faithful to others could be. Her actions changed the lives of people around her and showed us what amplified faithfulness can do. Lesson 5: Peace Why should I make time for peace? Jesus disciples noticed that he often spent time alone, even when hundreds or thousands of people wanted to see him. Jesus knew that peace isn t just something you have, it s something you do. Making time for peace amplifies every other part of our life, into something much better than before. Lesson 6: Love and Joy In one of the most dramatic stories of the Bible, Jesus tells of a father who welcomes back his lost son. This story changes the way we see love. Love isn t just a feeling, it s a powerful force. When love is amplified, everyone notices. How can we pump up the volume of love in our lives today? Our first step is the same as it was for the lost son, to return to the One who loves us. Then, we can start to love others the same way He does. 3

Do This: Repeat some of the kids answers as they call them out. (Auto advance) Elevate Slide and Underscore Welcome 1:00 Well everyone, I m so glad you re here! My name is. We ve got such an incredible time planned. It s a new year, and we have a new series called, which is going to be extraordinary. Soon we ll have some amped up worship and a team activity. In case you missed it, your grade has been given a color, which is the color of your team! Can I get a yell from the first graders, the white team? How about the orange team? The gray team? The teal team? And the black team? Question of the Day 2:00 Nice. I want to give you a chance to get to know your teams better, so we re going to do a Question of the Day. Question of the Day Video (Auto Advance) QOTD Slide: What s the loudest place you ve ever been? 5

6 What is the loudest place you ve ever been? Think about it, then find someone on your squad and talk about your answers! Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Know This: It s more important that the kids interact with each other than with you. Allow them time enough to share with each other, and don t have them share with the whole group. Definition Slide: - To make something louder or greater. We re going to be using the word amplify a lot today. To amplify something means to make it louder or greater, like this microphone is amplifying my voice! Or, you could amplify a boring day by having a snowball fight. That would be super fun. Group Activity 10:00 Game Title Slide: The Circle Game Speaking of fun, I think it s time for a game called The Circle Game. This game is for each of your grades, but it s also a boys against girls game. Everyone in your grade will sit in a circle, and then I ll choose three boys and three girls to stand in the middle. They get out of the middle by going up to someone and pointing at them. If someone in the middle points at you, you have to switch places with them. They sit, and you stand. Remember, you have to switch with them if they point at you. Do This: Demonstrate for the kids. Multiple times if you feel it is necessary. Now, this is a boys against girls game because whoever has the fewest people in the middle when the music stops wins! That s the fewest people, so if there are two girls and four boys in the middle, the girls win. So, girls, you only want to get boys into the middle, and boys, you only want to get girls into the middle. If you are in the middle, and you make someone stand up, remember, you have to take their place sitting in the circle. 6

7 One more thing. The music could stop at any time, so go as fast as you can! Get into your circles and choose three boys and three girls to start in the middle, once you re ready we ll start the music, and you can go. Know This: You may adjust the number of people in the middle. A large group would need more people, while a smaller group could get away with two boys and two girls. Feel free to combine grades if there are not enough girls or boys in one grade to make the game interesting. Do This: While the game is going on, stop and start the music. Give leaders time to count the number of boys and girls standing in their group, and figure out the winners. Allow about one minute of time between starting and stopping the music, though you could go shorter or longer. Music Videos Use Hangtime Music videos for game music. Stop and start the music on cues from the leader. Worship Slide Great job! That was fun to watch. That game was all about trading places with someone else. We ve got an awesome story coming up about someone who switched places with another person in a big way. Before we get to the story, though, we get to worship God! Worship means showing God that we love him. Worship 5:00 We have so many reasons to worship God! He gives us joy and peace, and He loves us so much. This is a song about letting everyone know how incredible God is! This is the first time we ll be doing this song, so I m going to show you a few of the actions before we start, and then we ll get right into worshipping God! Do This: Show kids the actions to the chorus of Shout it from the Mountains. Song 1: Shout it from the Mountains 7

8 (Auto advance) Worship Slide It s fun to worship God in all kinds of different ways. Whether you are a ballet dancer, a football player, or an astronaut, you can worship God through what you do. Another great way to worship is to spend time talking to God. We call that prayer. Usually, we close our eyes and put our hands together when we pray, to help us stay focused on God. We usually think about goodness as just doing the right thing and following the rules, but God thinks it can be something more. Lesson Intro 1:00 As you can see, this series is called. We see things get amplified all the time. In fact, this microphone is amplifying my voice right now, making it louder! We re not talking about how to amplify music or our voice, though. We re going to think about how to amplify things like peace, patience, and joy in our lives. There are all kinds of stories in the Bible about people who did amazing things with the power of love, kindness, and the one we re talking about today, goodness. When we amplify goodness, it becomes incredibly powerful. That s the question for today, then. What happens when we do good things? Or to say it another way, how do we amplify goodness? You ll get to talk about that in your groups. It s time to find your group leaders! 8

9 Group Time 15:00 (Optional) 15:00 Group Time Countdown Do This: Make sure each kid finds their group. Help group leaders if there is a need. Encourage kids as they work to answer the question. Know This: This is a time for kids to search for answers in the Bible, and see how they can use the Bible to investigate and better understand life. This time is designed for kids to interact and deepen their understanding. They won t get all the answers, but allow them to question and discover as much as possible. Be ready to support group leaders in any way needed. Do This: Give the groups a warning about one minute before this time is up. When this time ends, transition into the memory verse challenge. The kids may stay sitting during the memory verse challenge. Bumper Video (1:00) Memory Verse Challenge 3:00 (Auto-Advance) Memory Verse Slide: Galatians 6:9 Let us not become tired of doing good. At the right time we will gather a crop if we don t give up. It s time for our memory verse! This one is awesome, it s from the book of Galatians. Let s read it together. Do This: Read the verse from the screen. Paul, the guy who wrote this verse, was using the idea of farming to talk about what it s like to follow Jesus. Just like plants grow fruit, we grow fruit. Ours isn t like apples, pears, or corn. Instead, we grow things like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We call those things the fruit of 9

10 the Spirit. That s why Paul wrote in this verse: We will gather a crop if we don t give up. Just like you d get apples from an apple tree, when we try to grow more faithfulness, joy, or peace, we ll get it. That s Paul s challenge for us, don t give up doing good, because it s totally going to be worth the effort. Let s say that verse together, with a southern farmer s accent. Do This: Say the verse in a southern, farming accent. Let s say it again with a British accent. Do This: Say the verse in a British accent. Let s do it one more time, and say it like our mouths are packed full of marshmallows. Do This: Say the verse like your mouth is full of marshmallows. Media: Part 2 7:00 Nice job! The Light Force team learned that, but it sounds like Jesus knew it better than anyone. His story was all about how someone made a big difference through the power of goodness. Application 5:00 So we re back to our big question. Why should we practice goodness? You talked about it with your groups, and heard what the Bible says about it. I think we have a good answer. Goodness is more than just doing the right thing and following the rules. The good Samaritan was good because he didn t act like everyone else and just pass by the man who was hurt. Being good is different, it s risky. When we take being good and we amplify it, suddenly we get a great way to be good. Goodness means doing the right thing, and it means making the right choice, but it can mean something a lot more, too. 10

11 I can do good for someone else. We can do good for someone else. That s exactly what the Samaritan in Jesus story did. He cared for the hurt man, no matter what it cost him. Still, there are lots of ways to be good that aren t as hard as this. We can do all kinds of other good things, so why would Jesus ask us to do what s best for someone else? Guitar Video The leader will be talking during this video. This is an important part of the lesson to run ahead of time, to make sure you have the timing and sound levels correct. Do This: Stand by the script and read this section, unless you are certain you have it memorized. It is important that this section is word for word, and is said quickly. The video is timed for a medium talking pace, and pausing or hesitating will change that timing. It s like this guitar. There are all kinds of notes you can play. Single note plays. Every one of them is different. Low and high, loud and quiet, these notes make up every song we hear. Like that, there are normal ways to be good, things that most people do. Those notes are important. Series of notes begins. Following the rules, not causing trouble, and not hurting other people are good. Those things keep us out of trouble. They help our lives go well. They might be like playing one note at a time on this guitar. Silence. We need those notes, but there s so much more to goodness, too. Jesus talked about a different kind of goodness, a greater kind, doing good for someone else. That kind of goodness is like playing a chord. Chord plays, and transitions into a song. 11

12 Goodness, amplified, becomes something great. When we live the way Jesus says we can, doing good in small ways and big ways, our lives become an incredible song, a work of art that points people to God. You never know what will happen, never know what chances God will give you to do something great. Video and sound will fade out and auto-advance. It starts by doing the right things, and obeying our parents and leaders, but it becomes so much more when we do good for others. When we see someone who needs help, we can be the person that gives it to them. When we see someone who is hurting, we can be the one who comforts them. When we see someone who doesn t know how much God loves them, we can be the ones who tell them. Goodness amplified turns life into an adventure, where every day there are new ways to make it amazing. The more you make life good for someone else, the more beautiful your life gets, too. That s what makes goodness great.
