4 p HUDDLE UPS (OPTIONAL) Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that preschoolers can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. This time can continue for a few seconds even after the stage manager addresses the crowd. (Print the following for your small group leaders.) Would You Rather? Would you rather be an eagle or a dolphin? Why? Would you rather be a fork or a spoon? Why? Would you rather have a dog s nose or an alligator s tail? Why? Would you rather be able to fly or to breathe underwater? Why? Would you rather be a giraffe or an elephant? Why? Would you rather be as big as a rhinoceros or as small as a ladybug? Why? Would you rather be as fast as a cheetah or as slow as a turtle? Why? Color Angels Visited Joseph and Mary Coloring Sheets Tell preschoolers that today they will have the opportunity to learn how God told Mary and Joseph about Jesus. Provide coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Allow them to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin. (Kids should be ignoring the Stage Manager or having obvious difficulty hearing what is being said.) (talks loudly; waves arms to get kids attention) Hey, guys! Can you hear me now? (Kids should be quieting down and affirming that they can hear.) It s so important that you guys can hear me this morning because I am excited about today s lesson! Today, we are going to get to hear all about two messengers whose job it was to tell that Jesus was going to be born in Bethlehem. Last week, we learned about some prophets. Today we re going to hear about some other messengers God sent to tell about His Son, Jesus. As usual, our team has been working very hard to get ready. Let me check in with them and then we should be ready to get going! (speaks into headset) Lighting crew, how are we? (waits) Great! Audio crew? (waits) Sounds awesome! Video crew, how bout you? (waits) Perfect. OK, guys, everyone here is ready. Are you ready? (waits for kids to respond) OK, then, PLACES!! (runs offstage) FOR LIFE PRESCHOOL 5

Host walks out at around 30 seconds, using a megaphone for the beginning.) Hello, boys and girls! Let s stand up count down together! 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!! Great job! How is everyone doing today? (still uses megaphone to make voice considerably louder) Can everyone hear me? Does this make my voice louder? Can anyone tell me what this is called? (stops using megaphone after question) It s a megaphone. Can you say that with me? Megaphone! People use megaphones when they want to be sure that everyone can hear what they re saying. It helps make your voice louder when it goes through it. In our story today, we re going to meet two people that God wanted to make sure KNEW about Jesus coming. (Show Life Point slide.) Today we will see that angels told Mary and Joseph that Jesus would be born. Let s say that together. (Repeat with slide.) Angels told Mary and Joseph that Jesus would be born. We learn in our verse that the angels even told Mary and Joseph what to name Jesus. It s from Matthew 1:21 and it says: (Show Bible Verse slide select preferred version.) 8 p CONNECTION POINT GAME c Estimated time: 5-10 minutes Tech: Connection Point slide, t Connection Point theme music p People: Host, 2 kids Props: 2 large bags of assorted h gift wrap bows, (optional) sorting containers (bowls/boxes/etc.) Game Instructions: This game is designed for 2 competing players (boys vs. girls), onstage with the Host. This is a Christmas game where the players will be sorting bows. This can be done in piles or with boxes/ bowls/etc. The bows can be sorted into color from the large assorted bows bag. The first one to sort all of their bows wins. Host (Play Connection Point theme music and show Connection Point slide.) Hey, boys and girls! Welcome to Connection Point! I ll explain the rules in just a minute, but before I do, I need a couple of volunteers. (Introduce kids creatively.) Since we re getting close to Christmas, we wanted to help you prepare for wrapping presents. Our two players are going to help us sort our gift bows! So, when I say Go, they are going to put all the red bows together and all of the white bows together and all of the green bows together (and so forth). Can you help me cheer your friends along while they sort? Great! Are you two ready to sort? OK on your marks, get set, go! (Play for a few minutes.) Boys and girls, YOU are great bow sorters! Have a seat and let s find out what next in our story! Last week, we heard about two men called prophets. Remember that prophets were people who knew something from God that God wanted everyone else to know. Today, we will meet a different kind of messenger. This messenger is an angel. STORYTELLER (Show Bible Story slide.) (uses megaphone; speaks slowly and dramatically) Hello boys and girls! My name is and I am very happy to be here to tell you our story for todaaaaayyyy! Can everyone hear meeeeeeee??? (without megaphone) Do you guys think I need to keep using that? Nah me neither. But, it s a great way to make sure that everyone can hear, right? What do you think I would use if I needed to talk to even more boys and girls? What if I needed to talk to five rooms full of kids? I might use this thing. (holds up bullhorn) Have you ever seen one of these? A friend of mine was just telling me about a fire drill that happened at his daycare. Do you know what a fire drill is? A fire drill is like a practice. It s where everyone lines up and goes outside to make sure they know what to do if there is a fire. So my friend and his buddies had to line up and go outside all the way to the parking lot! Do you know what else? They weren t allowed to say a single word. Can everyone put your finger over your mouth like this? (demonstrates Shhh motion) (whispering) Wow. You guys are so quiet! (talks a bit louder; still keeping quiet tone) When they finally got out there, the preschool director had to give them instructions for going back inside. Guess what she used to talk? A bullhorn like this! (uses bullhorn for next sentences) OK, everyone great job during the fire drill. Good job staying in your lines and staying quiet. It is now safe to go back inside. (without bullhorn) You could all hear that, right? A bullhorn is good to use when there s something really important to say to people. Remember in our story last week when we learned about the prophets who told everyone that Jesus was coming and that he d be born in Bethlehem? Isaiah and Micah? Well, I bet they would have liked this megaphone (holds up megaphone) when they told people Jesus was coming. They might have even liked this bullhorn. (holds up bullhorn) Today, we re going to hear about Mary who would be Jesus mommy. One day, an angel came to see her at her house! She must have been scared because he said, Don t be afraid, Mary! Would you be scared if an angel came to your house? Well, he told her that God was very happy with her. The angel s name was Gabriel. What was his name? Yes! Gabriel. Gabriel told Mary that she was going to have a baby. That baby would be a boy and Mary was to name Him Jesus. God made sure that Jesus mommy was ready for Him. FOR LIFE PRESCHOOL 9

10 Then, an angel came to talk to Joseph in a dream. The angel told Joseph not to be afraid to get married to Mary and that he should name the baby Jesus. We ve heard that before, right? That s where our Bible verse comes from! (Show Christ Focus Slide.) God had very important information that He needed to make sure people knew, didn t He? God called on the prophets Isaiah and Micah to make sure that people heard the news. Then He had extremely important news for Mary and Joseph, so He sent angels to tell them. Remember, God sent Jesus, who was His only Son, to be the Savior of the world. Will you pray with me? Dear God, You sent your prophets and angels to tell everyone about Jesus. You didn t have to send Your only Son, but You did because You love us. Thank You for sending Jesus to be the Savior of the world. Thank You for how You love and care for us. In Jesus name, Amen. Host enters carrying megaphone and bullhorn.) I get it now! The prophets from last week were like megaphones and the angels who came to Mary and Joseph were like bullhorns. That s pretty cool! (sets megaphone and bullhorn aside) God made sure that everyone knew His Son was coming. Optional Giving Segment: One of the ways we can tell God that we re thankful is when we give to Him. Giving to Him tells Him we re thankful for all the wonderful things He s given to us! If you d like to give today, (Give your own directions for how the kids can give to God. Perhaps you have buckets in the back of the room, a chest up front, or an envelope that each small group leader passes.) (Show Bible Verse slide select preferred version.) In today s verse, we hear what God wanted His Son named. Let s say our verse together: Mary will have a son, you will name Him Jesus. (probably; angel said to not be afraid) What did the angel say to Joseph? (to marry Mary) MISSIONS EMPHASIS (OPTIONAL) Recall or tell the Shirey s missionary story. (below) Remind the kids that the Shirey s live in the Amazon jungle. Gather pictures and facts about rainforest animals and birds. Hide the pictures around the area. Ask the kids to name some things they might see in the jungle. Tell kids that the jungle is home to many unique animals, birds and reptiles. Invite the kids to find the photos and bring them back to the group. Then talk about each animal. Guide kids to pray for the Shirey s as they tell people in Suriname about Jesus. Missions Story: Shireys in Suriname More than 300 years ago, a group of people known as the Aukans traveled down big rivers to live in the rainforest of South America. They settled in the country of Suriname. Now more than 15,000 Aukaners live there in grass huts next to the rivers. Many of them have never heard about Jesus. Charles and Brittany Shirey are missionaries. They have three kids named Ethan, Caleb, and Abigail. Their family rides on motorboats on those same rivers. They are far away from the big cities and neighborhoods. There are no roads or cars. They walk on dirt paths to visit people in the villages. Their life is very different and exciting, but it also can be dangerous and frustrating. So why are the Shireys in Suriname? They believe that God wants them to live among the Aukan people and tell them about Jesus. It is not easy living there, but the people need to hear the gospel. There are dangers in being close to the river, such as poisonous snakes, fish, and spiders. But, the Shireys are used to the challenges of living in a jungle. Ethan, Caleb, and Abigail are growing up in the jungle. They love telling people about Jesus. Their dad, Charles, visits Aukaners in the villages during the day, and he leads Bible studies for them at night. The people do not know how to read, but they like hearing and telling stories. It is exciting to see the people learn about God and the truth of the Bible stories. Charles and Brittany Shirey are trusting God in their missions work in Suriname. They trust God for needs such as water to drink. They trust God to help Ethan, Caleb, and Abigail learn and grow, and they trust God with the work they do in reaching the Aukan people with the gospel of Jesus. FOR LIFE PRESCHOOL 15
