1 EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN OF THE DIOCESE OF LONG ISLAND Summer 2018 Dear Episcopal Church Women & Friends, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The Episcopal Church at the moment is preparing for the 79th General Convention and 49th Episcopal Church Women Triennial Meeting in Austin, Texas, July 3 through July 13, Joan Derle was chosen as the Distinguished Women for the Diocese of Long Island, and she will be honored at the National Episcopal Church Women s Luncheon on Sunday, July 8, 2018 in Austin, Texas. One of the themes for this year's Triennial is "Taking ECW Deeper into the Jesus Movement" and one for the 79th Convention is "#PrayFastAct for Disaster Preparedness". The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Long Island are always in the forefront taking care of those who need our help, whether it is speaking out for others, knitting for those who need to be warm, clothing the naked and feeding the hungry. It is written in the Book of Proverbs: "Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy. A Blessed and active time for those attending Convention, and also to those who are working for the poor at home during the summer. In His Service. 3 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 3 SPOTLIGHT Deacon Marjorie Boyden-Edmonds was featured in an article for NJ.com regarding the state of pastoral care at hospitals in Hudson County, New Jersey. The writer outlines how budget cuts have affected pastoral care staff and support staff, and how new hospital management has changed the values within the hospital structures. The Rev. Alexander Santora, author of the article, refers to Hoboken University Medical Center (HUMC), where Dcn. Boyden-Edmonds is director of pastoral care and has served as chaplain for 18 years, as a bright spot within the industry. Deacon Marjorie Boyden-Edmonds is the current Chaplain for the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women Executive Board and Seamen s Church Institute Coordinator for the Queens ECW Scholarship Winners The Diocesan Episcopal Church Women s Board is happy to announce this year s scholarship winners. We were very happy to have applicants from the four counties of the diocese this year. From Brooklyn, the winner is Diamond Lewis from St. George s parish. From Queens, Gina George from St. Alban the Martyr and Rachel Hocher from Grace, Whitestone From Nassau, Mimi Mbaukwu from Church of the Advent, Westbury From Suffolk, Deborah Kujawski from St. Mary s, Hampton Bays The funds for the scholarships are available from a trust that was left by generous donors in the past. 4 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 4 Carolyn Belvin President-Elect of the Province II Board Lisa Towle National ECW President The Province II ECW Annual meeting was held on April 13-14, at the St. Marguerite s Retreat House, Convent of St. John the Baptist, in Mendham, New Jersey. Our guest speaker the first evening was the ECW National Board President, Lisa H. Towle. Ladies from the three active Dioceses enjoyed an evening of conversation and sharing with Lisa, who cautioned us that in order for the ECW ministry to survive and grow we must adopt the 5 principles of - Welcome; Acceptance; Change; Discernment; Love. 5 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 5 ECW OF QUEENS being a Christian is not essentially about joining a church or being a nice person, but about following in the footsteps of Jesus, taking his teachings seriously, letting his Spirit take the lead in our lives. -- Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop Queens is highlighting a few community outreach projects by parish ECWs. St. David s, Cambria Heights - ECW collected items for Summer Survival Kits for St. David s Episcopal Church in Austin, TX. The Community Connection Gift as designated by National ECW is The Shower Ministry for homeless women housed at St. David s Episcopal Church in Austin, TX. Suggested items: socks / sunscreen / toothpaste / toothbrushes / soap / deodorant. To learn more and/or donate: The St. Anne s Guild of St. Alban the Martyr, St. Albans as part of their Women s Day Celebration hosted a Purse Project. New/nearly new handbags and totes were filled with new toiletries for women. Over 50 filled purses were donated to the Jamaica Women's Employment Shelter, Jamaica, NY. The purses were blessed by The Rev. Keith Voets before being delivered. Thank you to Emerica Thomas and Joan King for spearheading this endeavor. Even though QECW is still in need of a UTO Coordinator Please continue to help with the good work of the UTO by hosting your parish Spring UTO Ingathering and set the date for fall. The needs of the world continue and all of us can do our part. The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church created to fund innovative mission and ministry projects. The ministry has focused on gratitude and the importance of making a thank offering to remember that all good things come from God. Date Book: Saturday September 22 QECW Fall Open Meeting. Book of Remembrance 2018 Forms will be sent to each parish during the summer Budget Donations are due by December 1, Your support of the budget allows the ECW LI Diocesan Board to continue the mission and ministry of the ECW. Seamen s Church Institute: completed knitted /crocheted items can be brought to one of the meetings, or contact Angie Morris ( ) to arrange a convenient pick-up location. Church Periodical Club - CPC is supported by the prayerful concern, time, talents, labor and money of those who believe in the Ministry of the Printed Word.

7 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 7 St. John s Hospital Auxiliary The St. John s Episcopal Hospital Auxiliary recently met to discuss its current initiatives: Back to School project, seeking backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, etc., as well as monetary donations to purchase needed school supplies, with a first deadline of August 27. Collections can be dropped off at Grace Church/Whitestone or St. David s Church/Cambria Heights. Contacts: Maria or Phyllis New newborn items and diaper bags are a year-round need, mindful of the fact that 80% of women who give birth at St. John s Hospital have little to bring their babies home with. Donations can be dropped off at the hospital, as well as St. Boniface Church/Lindenhurst or Grace Church/Whitestone. 9 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 9 SEAMENS S CHURCH INSTITUTE (SCI) Throughout our Long Island Diocese, knitters, crochetiers, and those who sew have been very busy creating items for the Seamen s Church Institute s Christmas-at-Sea (CAS) program, as well as for many local charities. Since January we have collected over 600 items for CAS! And new this year, beautiful socks were knitted by Jane from St. John s, Southampton! The seafarers who stop at Port Newark are certainly going to love all the scarves, hats, socks, cowls, and toiletries they receive for Christmas! For the November 2018 collection, please remember to take a picture of your church s group in action with the items donated!. We love to see the pictures of the talented ladies in our churches who lovingly donate their time and gifts to many local charities, not only the CAS! 12 VOICES OF WOMEN PAGE 12 Episcopal Ministries of Long Island On Saturday, May 19, Episcopal Ministries hosted another Grant Writing workshop at St. Luke & St Matthew for almost 30 people. Parishes who are interested in hosting a session at their location are encouraged to contact EMLI so that arrangements can be made. The session provides an overview of the Episcopal Ministries Mission Grant process and reviews the key elements that funders generally look for when making funding decisions. Attendees will also review other available Diocesan grants and loans. Whether your parish currently has a grant, or is considering one, this workshop will offer valuable information about how to begin or how to strengthen your mission work. Episcopal Ministries welcomes your inquiries and requests.
