2 CHRIST THE KING This is the King of the Jews. In Luke this is the simple inscription, in Mark and Matthew a cause for consideration, in John an affirmation disputed by the chief priests. What a contrast there is between the inscription and the spectacle of the helpless crucified, between the salvation which some expected from him and the reality of this condemned man incapable of saving himself! For Luke, Jesus on the cross, enduring mockeries and insults, is the type of the persecuted just one, martyred by the impious who hurt their defiance at him: if you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. Highlighting the reactions of the two criminals who surround Jesus, Luke shows two possible attitudes toward the Messiah. One man condemns himself by blaspheming this laughable king, the other turns to him through whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins (Col 1:4). Jesus, who, since his temptations in the desert, has refused any demonstration of power for his own advantage, claims that he can save the one who trusts in him, this day you will be with me in paradise. This day is the time of the kingdom already present in the person of Jesus. Here, at the foot of the cross, the lordship of Christ takes root. PROMISE OF PARADISE Monarchy has very little meaning for us in the United States. Historically, you may recall, it was a part of the oppression that the founders of our nation fought to overthrow. Nowadays, we may perhaps enjoy watching the pomp and pageantry of modern royalty as seen from afar. We have rights as American citizens, and one of those rights is the free election of leaders from among ourselves to political office and the authority that goes with that office. If we do not agree with the actions of those in power we can vote in the next election to replace them. Authority is vested in the few by the many, and yet no one has a permanent hold on power in our political system. The reign of God is of another order and dimension entirely. Today we honor Christ as our King, the anointed one of God who if we accept him fully has rule over our hearts and lives. The Son of God became human so that human beings could experience the reign of God personally and directly. Jesus had the power to forgive sinners, heal the sick, and even raise the dead, but Christ PROMISE OF PARADISE Christ has none of the earthly trappings of power and forces his rule on no one. All are free to accept or to turn away, as Judas ultimately did. Even as Jesus hung on the cross, those around him still argued about his identity. Onlookers jeered because this king had no power to save himself. Of the two criminals, one wanted a quick release from his agony; the other acknowledged the power of Jesus innocence as well as his future rule. In response to this man s total faith and trust, Jesus said, Today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43). No earthly ruler can promise so much. Copyright 2009, World Library Publications. 5 Mass Intentions Christ the King O Jesus Christ, I acknowledge you as universal King. All that has been made has been created for You. Exercise all Your rights over me. I renew my Baptismal Vows. I renounce Satan, his pomps and his works; I promise to live as a good Christian. And, in particular do I pledge myself to labor, to the best of my ability, for the triumph of the rights of God and of Your Church. Divine Heart of Jesus, to You do I offer my poor services, laboring that all hearts may acknowledge Your sacred kingship, and that thus the reign of Your peace be established throughout the whole universe.
