2 2 St. Maximilian Kolbe Church With Christmas only a few weeks away, the shops and malls are loaded with goodies. Christmas songs fill the air. Parties are being arranged and cookies prepared. Thoughts of home, of family, and of a lovely time fill our hopes and imaginations. With all these sentiments in our hearts and minds we come to church today and hear about a weird guy living in the desert, wearing scratchy and horrible smelling clothes made of camel s hair, eating locusts, calling people a bunch of snakes while telling them that fire and brimstone will come down on them. The gospel picture ends with John the Baptist threatening the Sadducees and Pharisees with hell. Aren t you glad you came to church today just before Christmas to hear all of that? Well, John the Baptist reminds us that it s likely we all need to pay attention to a few things we have perhaps neglected in our lives. Take, for instance, those with whom we live: our spouse, our children, our parents, our friends. How have we loved them? How have we failed to love them? Repentance means change, and change is something we dislike. If you are driving to a destination and make a wrong turn, you can t just say oops and continue driving in the wrong direction. You have to turn around and get back on the right path. You have to make a change that makes a difference. Change has its demands, demands that go beyond mere words of regret. Advent has more to offer us, however, than that. Advent has a Savior for us. Beyond our own efforts to recognize sin and failure in our lives, beyond our confessions and admissions that lead us to repent, Advent presents us with what we truly need a Savior. The wonderful thing about Advent is in the end we are given the certitude of God s presence in our lives in Jesus Christ. Advent is all about our expectant faith in the God who loves us enough to send us His only Son. If we receive Him in our hearts and souls, deep down within and not simply with good wishes and nice thoughts, then the change that we enter into will move to God s abiding love deep within us to empower us to deal with ourselves, and to love ourselves and those around us as He would have us. 3 St. Maximilian Kolbe Church 3 Thank you to all who donated food and funds for the Thanksgiving baskets. We were able to give away 10 baskets this year! Please donate to the giving tree again this year. You can purchase a SCRIP card for those in need at all weekend masses. Each card purchased will be represented by an ornament placed on the tree. Father will distribute cards before Christmas. Let s fill up the tree with our generosity! See Terri or Karen at the SCRIP table for details. If you know of someone in need of a gift card, contact Fr. Trempe. We will be placing our order on December 15th for subscriptions starting March The cost is $30 payable to St. Max s. If you are interested, contact the parish office at Saturday, December 10th 5pm to 8:30 pm Sunday, December 11th 9am to 1pm Gift Wrapping provided by St. Max Students for free will offering. Each vendor will be donating an item for a free raffle drawing at the end of the fair. (Need not be present to win) Lunch will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting Youth Ministries. All other funds will be used for Adult Ministry & Adult Education to help foster the spiritual life of members of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish. Come enjoy the holiday spirit, and go gift shopping. We have 3 vendor spaces left! Contracts are available in the gathering space. If you or someone you know is a crafter or product distributor, pick up a contract. We are also asking parish families to donate craft items. These items will be accepted until Dec. 9th. Please price these items and place them in the box in the gathering space. Posters promoting the fair are available. Please take one and help us advertise this event. There will also be a volunteer sign up sheet in the gathering space for those who would like to help. Our Christmas Fair is looking for help from students & their families. We are in need of a few gift wrappers (all supplies will be provided). We also need a group to provide breakfast/lunch food items during the Sunday event. All moneys collected will go to the youth fund. The food & pricing is your choice. Some suggested ideas are hot dogs, BBQ, walking tacos, soda, punch, cookies, donuts & coffee. If you have any questions, contact Mary at Thank You!! We welcome you to our parish family.
