2 2 St. Maximilian Kolbe Church FATHER S CORNER Dear loving parishioners, Love and peace of Christ! At an intersection, the green light changes to yellow. At the theater, the house lights flash. At the airport terminal, the boarding call comes over the intercom. At a railroad crossing, the lights begin to flash. In the Desert of Judea, a voice of one calling in the wilderness is heard declaring, "Prepare the way of the Lord." What do all these have in common? They are signs or warnings that we need to prepare ourselves for what is about to happen. But the preparation on which John insisted was a preparation of heart and of life. "The king is coming," he said in effect. Mend, not your roads, but your lives. The quotation, Making straight the paths of the Lord, means clearing the path of sin, which is the major obstacle preventing the Lord from coming into our lives. By preaching his message in the wilderness, John was inviting the Jews of his day to come out of the bondage of slavery, to leave their faults, wandering, and sinful lives behind, and to enter into the Promised Land full of God s blessings. Advent, like Lent, is a season given to us so that we may repent of our sins and be reconciled with God and His Church by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It was for this purpose that Jesus instituted the Sacrament of reconciliation after His Resurrection. As individuals, we might too overcome deep-seated resentment persistent faultfinding, unwillingness to forgive, dishonesty in our dealings with others, or a bullying attitude. We all have to level the mountains of our pride and egocentrism. We can't be forgiven unless we forgive. We must release our bitterness if we are to be able to allow God to do His healing work in our lives. Let us go to confession and get reconciled with both God and our neighbor. May God Bless you! Father Peter In addition to our normally scheduled opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (listed on the front of the bulletin), there will be priests available to hear confessions on Sunday, December 16th at 6pm. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: On many Sundays, especially during Advent and Lent, we hear a reading from one of the prophets. What is significant about them for us? Didn't Jesus fulfill all their predictions? Answer: Lent and Advent are the times of the church year when the prophetic word forms an important part of the liturgical season. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, and Zephaniah are just some of the prophets who offer powerful and essential lessons for Christians of any era. Prophets do not predict the future. They are very much concerned about the present, calling Israel to follow once again the word of God. The prophets witness to a life of faith. In the midst of an intense relationship with God, the prophets are very aware of their unworthiness to embrace this call from God and struggle to accept the mission God entrusts to them. The prophets speak on behalf of God. Each testifies that the word spoken is not from them but from God. At times, this lands them in trouble with their audience. Jeremiah, for example, felt betrayed by God as the prophetic message was delivered. People did not like the message because of their sin-filled lives, and their displeasure was taken out on the prophet. While tempted at times to "throw in the towel," the prophets remained true to the life of faith and persevered in the proclamation of God's word. In modeling these virtues and calling us to greater fidelity, the prophets offer an example and message that are still important to us today.
