Service for the Lord s Day 2 nd Sunday after Pentecost 12 th Sunday in Ordinary time June 22, :00 a.m. Please SILENCE ALL Personal Electronic Devices Before Worship. We Gather as God s People Welcome to our worship service. Take a moment to quiet yourself as we prepare ourselves for worship. Preparation for Worship With different gifts, with a variety of talents, with an array of interests, we come to worship you, our creating God. We are here to unite our spirits, to be made one in Christ, to be merged in hope as your children. Bless our differences, that the unique gifts and perceptions of each may strengthen our oneness. Drawn into your Spirit, we give you the thanks of our hearts, Amen. Prelude Welcome and the Announcements of Our Church Life and Ministry We welcome you to worship this morning at OCPC. To our guests, we extend a special welcome. Please take a moment to sign the black fellowship pads (in the pews), with your name and information about yourself that you want to share with us. After worship, please join us for a time of fellowship and refreshments. Introit Call to Worship [Responsive]... Elder Cheryl Stitz Leader: God of darkness and light, People: Open our eyes to your justice. Leader: God of goodness and glory, People: Open our minds to your wisdom. Leader: God of compassion and kindness, People: Open our hearts to your love. *Opening Hymn PH # Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! *The Call to Reconciliation... The Rev. William J. Smith * Please stand as you are able. 1
*The Prayer of Confession [In Unison] God of light and love, you have given us these gifts to illuminate our way through the dark valleys we experience in life. Blinded by the darkness, unable to see you, we find ourselves lost in life, unsure of our direction. Fearful of the dark that prevents us from seeing you, we seek to take control, certain we can make it without you. Bumping against walls and stumbling over people, in a hurry to get out of the dark, we are unaware of how our actions have hurt others and even ourselves. Forgive us. By your touch, heal our blindness to the hurts and pains we have caused others, that we may once more be guided anew by your light and love. Amen. *Words of Assurance and Pardon... The Rev. William J. Smith *Confession Response PH # 579 Gloria Patri Glory Be to the Father Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. *Passing of the Peace of Christ to One Another Leader: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. People: To this peace we were called as members of a single body. Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Let us share the peace of Christ. We Listen for God s Word The Children s Message Being a True Disciple The Rev. William J. Smith Blessing: You are God s beloved child. With you God is well pleased. Prayer for Illumination... Elder Cheryl Stitz Leader: Let us pray... O God, we do not always know why we are here. People: We are often unsure of our purpose on earth. Sometimes we hope to catch a glimpse of who you are through the eyes of your startling vision, which images us as your caring, compassionate people. In the hearing of the Word, may the veil be lifted from our eyes, that we may see ourselves in this new way, living more fully as your servant people. Amen. The First Reading Romans 6:1b-11 (page 156, N.T.) Elder Cheryl Stitz The Second Reading Matthew 10:24-39 (pp , N.T.) The Rev. William J. Smith Pastor: For the Word of God in scripture, for the Word of God among us, for the Word of God within us, People: We give thanks to God. Sermon Victory in Christ The Rev. William J. Smith musical interlude for quiet personal reflection * Please stand as you are able. 2
We Respond to God s Love *Affirmation of Faith [In Unison]... The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Sharing of Joys and Concerns Prayers of the People... The Rev. William J. Smith Leader: We pray to the Lord People: Lord, hear our prayer. The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Prayer Response PH # Seek Ye First Seek ye first the kingdom of God And His righteousness, And all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Ask and it shall be given unto you, Seek and ye shall find, Knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Offering Our Tithes and Gifts to God Offertory Music *Offertory Response PH # 592 Doxology Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Offertory Prayer of Thanksgiving [In Unison] Generous God, as we remember Jesus temptation in the wilderness, we acknowledge the temptation that pursues so many of us: to measure our worth, our power and our security by what we have. As we offer these gifts to you this morning, we pray that you might deliver us from the temptation of building our lives around what belongs to us. Continually lead us to the conviction that what matters is that we belong to you. Amen. We Depart to Do God s Will *Closing Hymn PH # Great Is Thy Faithfulness * Please stand as you are able. 3
*Charge and Benediction... The Rev. William J. Smith Pastor: Shield us God with your crook and staff. People: Bring us safely home. Pastor: Guide us God with your truth and goodness. People: Bring us safely home. Pastor: Encourage us God with your oil and kindness. People: Bring us safely home. Pastor: Shepherd us God, walk with us always, People: Bring us home. Pastor: As you leave for your homes in neighborhood, community, and in the world, may God s light guide your way, Christ s love be your path, and the Spirit be your constant companion. And may the blessing of God Almighty: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you always. Pastor: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord and one another. People: Thanks be to God!! *Song of Dismissal PH # Song of Hope May the God of hope go with us every day, Filling all our lives with love and joy and peace. May the God of justice speed us on our way, Bringing light and hope to every land and race. Praying, let us work for peace, Singing, share our joy with all, Working for a world that s new, Faithful when we hear Christ s call. Postlude Oakland-Cambridge Presbyterian Church is committed to using language in such a way that all members of the community of faith may recognize themselves to be included, addressed, and equally cherished before God. Seeking to bear witness to the whole world, the church struggles to use language which is faithful to the biblical truth and which neither purposefully nor inadvertently excludes people because of gender, color, or other circumstance in life. (Book of Order, W ) Everyone is invited to stay for fellowship and refreshment following worship today. Today we welcome our Guest Preacher and Presider, The Rev. William J. Smith. Will is a retired priest of the Episcopal Church, a former hospice and hospital chaplain and social worker who worked with the developmentally disabled population. He volunteers helping people with employment issues; is an avid reader, student of Scripture, and Liturgics, and is a spiritual guide for seminarians and several clergy. Our liturgist today is Elder Cheryl Stitz. Our musician is Marilyn Schuster. Our ushers/greeters today are Jenine & Jack Spack. Nursery care is provided today by Deacon Mary Trailer. * Please stand as you are able. 4
Prayer concerns are requested in writing on Sundays; the blue cards can be found on the table in fellowship hall. The ushers can assist you. Printed copies of sermons are available in the box on the wall outside of the church office and on our website Lectionary for Sunday, June 29 Genesis 22:1-14; Psalm 13; Romans 6:12-23; Matthew 10: ANNOUNCEMENTS Pastor Scott will be out of the office on vacation and attending a continuing education event through June 30. The Rev. Jane Follmer Zekoff is providing emergency pastoral coverage while Pastor Scott is away. If you have a pastoral emergency, contact one of the Session members or the Church Office. They will put you in touch with Pastor Jane. For other pastoral assistance, please contact your Deacon or the Church Office. The Mission Committee reminds all folks to share their loose change in the Least Coin Crock, as a reminder of the prayers they say. Think of all the coins we would have if every time you prayed, you set aside a coin. These funds are to be used for local mission work. This is a year-long mission collection. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for our newsletter, The Good News, please send either your (preferred) or snail mail address to the church office. (Our addresses are listed on the last page of the bulletin.) Help us save pig points. Please turn in your receipts from Piggly Wiggly in the brown bag in the narthex, so that we can receive a rebate. All funds received are used for mission projects. Copies of These Days, a daily devotional magazine, are available at the rear entrance. Donations are voluntary.
