Paul tells us that we are to discern the body when we partake of Holy Communion, mindful that we note our relationship to all our brothers and sisters in Christ in the celebration...world Communion Sunday (originally called World Wide Communion Sunday) is a gift of the Presbyterian Church to the larger ecumenical church. The first celebration occurred at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1933 where Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr served as pastor. John A. Dalles, a PCUSA pastor who has researched the history of World Communion Sunday notes this in his blog entry, reprinted from the October 7, 2002, issue of Presbyterian Outlook: Davitt S. Bell (the late Clerk of Session and church historian at Shadyside) recalled that Dr. Kerr first conceived the notion of World Communion Sunday during his year as moderator of the General Assembly (1930). Dr. Kerr s younger son, the Rev. Dr. Donald Craig Kerr, who is pastor emeritus of the Roland Park Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, was sixteen in He has related that World Communion Sunday grew out of the Division of Stewardship at Shadyside. It was their attempt to bring churches together in a service of Christian unity in which everyone might receive both inspiration and information, and above all, to know how important the Church of Jesus Christ is, and how each congregation is interconnected one with another. When I asked Donald Kerr how the idea of World Communion Sunday spread from that first service to the world wide practice of today, this is what he replied, "The concept spread very slowly at the start. People did not give it a whole lot of thought. It was during the Second World War that the spirit caught hold, because we were trying to hold the world together. World Wide Communion symbolized the effort to hold things together, in a spiritual sense. It emphasized that we are one in the Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus Christ." Celebration of World Wide Communion Sunday was adopted as a denominational practice in the Presbyterian Church (US) in Churches in other denominations were invited to celebrate with us from the beginning, but it wasn t until 1940 when the Department of Evangelism of the Federal Council of Churches (a predecessor body of the National Council of Churches) promoted extending the celebration to a number of churches around the world that the practice became widespread. Today, World Communion Sunday is celebrated around the world, demonstrating that the church founded on Jesus Christ peacefully shares God-given goods in a world increasingly destabilized by globalization and global market economies based on greed.
2 2 Pastor s Page I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables October's Party October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came - The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The Sunshine spread a carpet, And everything was grand, Miss Weather led the dancing, Professor Wind the band. George Cooper October had tremendous possibility. The summer's oppressive heat was a distant memory, and the golden leaves promised a world full of beautiful adventures. They made me believe in miracles. Sarah Guillory, Reclaimed October does have tremendous possibility for us here at OCPC! Our children and teacher are busy exploring Heroes of the Bible. Our youth group is meeting for some October fun, heading to Schuster s Farm and their corn maze! We are also preparing to dream! Yes, dream. The Psalmist (126:1) says, We were like a people who dreamed! The Session is beginning to dream of what might be in our future ministry, and how we might together, join in dreaming what God has in store for our ministry. Over the last Sunday s of October and into the first ones in November, different Elders will be sharing with you some of our collective dreams for our mission and service, how our building helps to serve those dreams, and how we are called to live into those dreams. These dreams are not meant to be our remembrances of years past or the way we wish things were again. Rather, they are where we believe God is inviting us to change and grow so we can continue to meet the needs of people in a changing cultural. To that end, we invite you to join us over these Sundays, dreaming, and then living together as God s people into those new dreams! Pastor Scott

It gave us a great deal to consider in our thinking of how our church is run. The financial audit report was read and all is in compliance with our records and bookkeeping. Thank you to Ruth Poole who has done an excellent job. Renee Roland Johnson will be the new moderator of Christian Education. Thank you to Renee for committing to this position. Worship will be held in the Peace Garden on Sunday, September 27 with the Promised Band. A tailgate party potluck will follow with brats provided by Pastor Scott and hotdogs by Elder Pearson. Incorporation papers for the church have been filed. Thank you to attorney Mike Rumpf.
5 Worship & Theology Notes Over the past several months, there has been some discussion of adding to our rotation of Sunday worship accompanists. We are in the midst of exploring with a few new people along with our current accompanists, Marilyn Schuster and Marian Korth, how we might do this. The Session will be discussing this at their October meeting. In the meantime, you might notice some new faces at the piano and organ. Please make our guests feel welcome to OCPC as they work with us in our music ministry! Our choir, under the direction of Marilyn Schuster, will once again be providing special music for us on the second Sunday of each month. Choir practice is on those Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. Upcoming special services: Oct. 4 - World Communion Sunday October 11 - Nancy Breitsprecher October 25 - Reformation Sunday November 1 - All Saints Sunday with communion and the reading of the Necrology. Looking ahead to the Holiday Season, Advent begins November 29. We are still exploring whether the Cambridge Community Thanksgiving Service will be held this year. Stay tune for further information. We also invite you to sign up to be a liturgist, usher and greeter. The signup sheet is on a clip board in the Fellowship Hall information table.
