Contact Cheryl Stitz to help. Sun., October 12 Library Day Roof Update By Mark Touhey, Building and Grounds Committee Session would like to update you as to our progress on the roof. We have signed a contract with Trademark Restoration to replace the roof. We feel comfortable in hiring Trademark they are a large and stable company with a reputation of doing very good work. It is possible that they could begin the church roof as early as the week of September 22. They will be redoing approximately 90% of the roof. There are two flat sections of roof in the back that were done when we remodeled in 1999 that have never leaked and are holding up well. Two other flat or almost flat sections will be redone, but with a minor pitch added to aid runoff. Both will be covered with two layers of a more durable product. The rest of the roof will be covered with a lifetime shingle of high quality. The cost will be approximately $34,000. That includes tear-off and cleanup, and comes with a five year guarantee on workmanship. There is the potential for additional expenses that cannot be identified until the old roof is torn off. For example, we may need to replace some roof decking. Also, it is possible that we will need to replace the two sections of flat roof, depending on how the two roof sections are tied together. Those two sections would add $6,000 to the cost. In addition, we have hired Trademark to replace a section of the manse roof that is leaking, for an additional $1,400. The total cost could rise to $42,000. It would seem appropriate to update you as to the church finances at this time. We have been blessed with a timely gift of $25,000 from the estate of Ray Wheeler. Insurance will be paying for up to $9,000 of the new roof. Thankfully, the majority of the roof expense will be covered, but not the entire amount. We are two thirds of the way through the year and our annual budget. The good news is that Session has kept spending at or below budgeted amounts. (The only (continued on page 3)
2 2 Pastor s Page Is it really October, already? It is must be. The leaves are beginning to turn, there is a crispness in the air, the apples are ripe for the picking, and you can smell cinnamon as those delicious apple pies bake. October also is the month we in the Presbyterian Church (USA) join with Christians around the globe to celebrate World Communion Sunday. World Communion Sunday is always celebrated on the first Sunday in October. As we gather around the table of Christ, we recognize our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters. The first celebration of World Communion Sunday began at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA, in Dr. Hugh Thompson, the pastor, conceived of the idea. Dr. Kerr s younger son, the Rev. Dr. Donald Craig Kerr, who is pastor emeritus of the Roland Park Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, was sixteen in He has related that World Communion Sunday grew out of the Division of Stewardship at Shadyside. It was their attempt to bring churches together in a service of Christian unity in which everyone might receive both inspiration and information, and above all, to know how important the Church of Jesus Christ is, and how each congregation is interconnected one with another. When I asked Donald Kerr how the idea of World Communion Sunday spread from that first service to the world wide practice of today, this is what he replied, The concept spread very slowly at the start. People did not give it a whole lot of thought. It was during the Second World War that the spirit caught hold, because we were trying to hold the world together. World Wide Communion symbolized the effort to hold things together, in a spiritual sense. It emphasized that we are one in the Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. (presbyterianmission.org) World Communion Sunday is one of my favorite celebrations in the church. The table has long been the place that I have most experienced the grace-filled, loving, welcoming, and healing presence of Christ, our host. At the table, regardless of who we are or where we are in our faith journey, we are welcomed by Christ. For me, this is a sacramental sign of the radical hospitality Christ lived out in his life as witnessed to and shared by the Gospel writers and lived out in churches and in our lives. In his folk song, Calling All The Children Home, Folk-singer, John McCutcheon, lyrics speak to the radical welcome Christ provides around the table and the reason for celebrating World Communion Sunday: So, out in the desert, down by the sea Hear the voice calling "Allee, allee in free!" From the city to the forest where the wild beasts roam We are calling all the children home (chorus) Home to the table, home to the feast Where the last are first and the greatest are the least Where the rich will envy what the poor have got Everybody's got enough, 'though we ain't got a lot No one is forgotten, no one is alone When we're calling all the children home Gathered 'round the table and the big, black pot Everybody's got enough, 'though we ain't got a lot No one is forgotten, no one is alone From the sacks in Soweto to the ice of Nome From Baghdad City to the streets of Rome When we're calling all the children home "Moishe, Isabelle, Sipho, Kim Mohammed, Mikael, Red Hawk, Tim Your name is also being called home to the table, where on Sunday, October 5, we will celebrate with our brothers and sisters-in-christ around the world and here in Cambridge!
3 OCPC Sunday School 2014 We celebrated the fall start of Sunday school with Rally Day on September 14th. We welcomed Libby, Sam, Tara, Tyce, Maggie, Grace, Emily, Trevor and Roman. Great to see you all! Roof Update (continued from page 1) area that has exceeded budget is Building and Grounds. The cost of snowplowing last winter was almost double what was budgeted, and our insurance costs have gone up but in no way related to our claim.) Overall, we could finish under budget which is always great. The bad news is that income has not kept up. We have taken in $4,000 less than we have spent, which projects to a budget deficit of $6,000 to $7,000 by the end of the year. That deficit is an improvement on last year, when we were short by more than $10,000, or the year before, when our deficit was almost $15,000. In efforts to balance the budget, Session keeps looking for ways to cut costs. For example, Scott is working on a 40% contract, as opposed to the 50% contract with Jessica. But it is very difficult to find something that could be cut from our budget without having an adverse impact on our ability to worship together. Also, we already have a $12,000 debt, with no plans within our budget to pay the loan off. We are asking you to consider an additional donation to the church in the coming weeks. We will keep you updated through the coming months. If you have any questions or concerns about the roof or the budget, please contact Richard Trailer or Mark Touhey. Thank you for your support. Little Gifts Go Long Way By Cheryl Stitz, Mission Committee The average gift to the Presbyterian Mission Agency s special offering is $2. This small amount, when given by millions of believers, has the power to change the world. Last year, the PC(USA) raised over $12 million through generous gifts made by special offerings. Programs supported by the Presbyterian Mission Agency can use these contributions to improve lives around the world while sharing the love of Christ. Providing Opportunities Scholarship assistance that enables students to attend Presbyterian related racial ethnic schools and colleges. Protecting Children Advocacy that nurtures and protects our children and youth. Advocating Peace Promotion of peace practices through education and Christian witness. Serving Communities Volunteer programs that bring young adults together in fellowship, worship, and service throughout the world. Guiding Youth Ministries that guide youth in their walk with Christ, and inspire those called to accompany them. Investing in People Partnerships with people struggling to alleviate poverty, oppression, and injustice in their communities. Giving Back Financial support and grants for current and retired Presbyterian Church workers in their time of need. Reducing Hunger Initiatives to alleviate hunger and its systemic causes, and strengthen alternatives to produce and share healthy food. Restoring Hope Working alongside communities as they recover and find hope after disruption from natural or human-caused disasters.

SESSION NOTES By Elder Judy Pearson, Clerk of Session The Session met on Wednesday, September 10 with all elders present. Pastor Scott opened and closed with prayer. The main topic of discussion was the roof repair and the financial concerns for the church. Trademark Restoration Inc. has been contracted to replace the roof. Work could be started this month. The total cost will be dependent on how much repair has to be completed. The approximate cost could be up to $42,000. Repair to areas of the manse roof for $1,400 is included in this cost. A letter giving an update will be sent out to the membership. To date, our income is less than our expenses for the church budget. The outdoor communion service was enjoyed my many, with the Promised Band, and the potluck meal. Rally Sunday will be on September 14. It will be a welcoming time for the return of the youth to Sunday School. October 6 will be a Learning Day for Leaders seminar at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. This is open to all members of the church to attend. The Mission committee will be working with the Family Promise program and will be providing the food and personnel to be at the Willerup Camp on Wednesday, October 1. 5 Smile! An message submitted by Kay Lund & Judy Pearson There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you well, pray for the ones who don't. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living. "Today may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us. Saint Teresa of Ávila I hope you have many reasons to smile!
