3 Serving Your Sacramental Needs May 13, 2018 Page 3 Mass Intentions for the Week The Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament is celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 PM and on the first Saturday of each month. Parents, please call the parish office to arrange a meeting with a priest. The Sacrament of Eucharist See front cover for mass times. If you are sick for an extended period of time or are homebound, contact the parish office to have someone bring Communion to you. The Sacrament of Confirmation School aged children can prepare for this Sacrament by contacting our Faith Formation Office. Adults who have yet to be Confirmed should contact the Parish Office The Sacrament of Reconciliation As listed on front cover or call the office to see a priest. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick This Sacrament is for the living. We celebrate this Sacrament each Spring and Fall for those who are chronically ill, advanced in age, or who are about to undergo surgery or hospitalization. We can arrange the Sacrament at other times by calling the Parish Office. Emergencies: Call the office to speak to a priest. Nighttime emergencies (631) The Sacrament of Matrimony Bride or Groom please call the office at least six months before your desired wedding date to begin preparations for marriage. Please make contact with the parish before making other wedding day plans! The Sacrament of Holy Orders If you feel called to serve in the church as a priest deacon or in consecrated religious life, call the office to speak to one of the priests or deacons for guidance. We have classes to help people learn about our faith and decide if becoming Catholic is best for you. 4 May 13, 2018 Page 4 Legislative Corner Respect Life A few months ago Mississippi passed the strictest anti-abortion law in the country, banning abortion after the 15 th week of pregnancy. Last week the state of Iowa surpassed this law by passing detectable heartbeat legislation. This legislation bans abortion if there is a detectable fetal heartbeat. Because of medical advances, a fetal heartbeat is detectable at six weeks, so it is at six weeks that abortion becomes illegal in Iowa. Governor Kim Richards signed the Heartbeat Bill on Friday, May 4 th. Unfortunately this is only the first step in a long battle. Like the Mississippi law, it is expected that the law will be blocked from going into effect by injunctions sought in Federal court. North Dakota and Arkansas also passed heartbeat legislation that has never been implemented due to injunctions. Both Planned Parenthood and ACLU Iowa have announced their plans to sue the state of Iowa prior to the enactment date of July 1 st. It is widely believed by the Abortion industry, that these restrictive laws at the state level are being passed in hopes that one of the resulting cases will be argued before the United States Supreme Court, with the result being the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. The result of an overturning would not be necessarily an illegalization of abortion on a national level, but more likely it would throw the issue back to the states, but a more concrete result is possible, depending on how such a case is decided. This potential eventuality has wide reaching implications. If the 2018 mid-term elections result in the turn-over of the Senate to the Democrats, President Trump will find it almost impossible to get any potential Supreme Court Justice nominations approved. It is considered likely that President Trump will have another slot to fill during his first term; he may even have two. As usual, this subject goes along strict party lines, as Pro-Life democrat candidates seem to be an extinct species. Iowa s Heartbeat Bill did not receive one Democrat vote in either house of the State Legislature. We live in frightening times, when people who are Pro-Life are considered extremists, and the people who believe in abortion on demand, at any point during pregnancy are considered the norm. More frightening is the fact that one of the two major political parties in this country will not tolerate any deviation from their established political orthodoxy; Pro-Life Democrats need not apply. As Catholics, we are morally obligated to defend life at all its stages. We are making some progress in our fight. There has been a decrease in abortions each of the past three years, but we still have a long way to go. Please consider coming to the next Respect Life Ministry meeting. We need your help! 5 Transition Mode Last weekend we announced that Fr. Gil has been named pastor of St Frances Cabrini Parish in Coram. This assignment will take effect on the last Wednesday of June. Now, much of our energy is focused on making a smooth transition, even as we go through the process of grieving our friend, Fr Gil. According to Elizabeth Kubler Ross, the five stages of grief are: Anger, Denial, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Emotionally, any one of us could be at any one of those stages at any moment. From a practical point of view, I am at the bargaining stage, as I am bargaining with clergy personnel to get us the best priest possible to replace Fr. Gil. I am reaching out to the priests who are available for transfer and I am in regular contact with our vicar, Msgr. Richard Henning to see what can be done to help our parish. We ll see what happens. For now, I ask everyone to pray for our parish and for whomever comes to serve here. Celebrating and Thanking Fr. Gil Immediately after the announcement about Fr. Gil s transfer, I was asked about a party for him. Yes we will celebrate Fr Gil. On Saturday June 23, Fr. Gil will celebrate the 5:00 mass and there will be a celebration of his service immediately following the mass in Carew Hall. Before anyone gets into questions about the day and time, this is when Fr Gil is available to celebrate! Everyone is invited to come and say Good Bye to Fr. Gil and thank him for the many ways he has touched your life. Back to Practical Transition Things It is amazing how many things Fr. Gil got involved in while he was here. We are in the process of listing all of those things, finding out what responsibilities he took care of, and finding people to cover these responsibilities. This is going to be a challenging time for all of us. I encourage everyone in our parish to pray even more during this time of transition. Definitely pray for Fr. Gil as he goes through this change. Also pray for us - for our parish as a community and for each individual member of the parish. I also ask everyone to be patient with ourselves and with one another. Because this transition is emotional, we could find our emotions to be a little more raw in the next few weeks and months. Each one of us needs to attend to that when we feel it happening. Last Sunday at the 7:00 mass, a parishioner asked to speak after I made the announcement. After telling how Fr. Gil had helped her family and how painful this is to hear that he is going, she said, but I have to let go because God is calling you to serve somewhere else. What a faith filled Christian response to this transition! -Fr Mike Thank You For Your Generosity & Input As we began a monthly collection for repairs and maintenance, we asked for input as to what projects should get priority. Here s a little update on some of the projects: A parishioner made a generous donation to cover all the costs of the lower sanctuary (Which was to be our first project). Now we are looking to schedule this work in the least intrusive way to our parish schedule. This will most likely happen over the summer. That same parishioner made another generous donation toward the cleaning up of our back yard. We are now looking at the clean up and plans for the yard so that it can be a useful gathering space for parishioners. We will probably ask for a work party to do some of the work. More to come As I am writing this, there is work being done on the lot behind the church and adjacent to the lower school (where the cones were). Much of this work is covered by insurance and we are thankful to God for finally giving us warm enough weather to get this work done. So, there are some improvements noticeable already and more on the way. All your donations toward repairs and maintenance are used only for this purpose.
