He is visited by an angel who tells him to eat and drink in order to be able to withstand his journey. In Paul s Letter to the Ephesians, he reminds us to remove evil and instead take on compassion and mercy. In Today s Gospel, Jesus explains that receiving him, the Bread of Life, is the way to the Father in heaven.
4 August 12, 2018 Page 4 Respect Life Healthcare? Pro-abortion advocates love to refer to abortion as healthcare. Of course, this is an effort to steal the narrative, and put Pro- Lifers in the position of arguing against women s healthcare. Thankfully, the average American is not stupid, and when they take a moment to consider this position, they will realize its many flaws: Abortion is responsible for the death of approximately 61 million people in our country. The Hippocratic Oath states that the physician will do no harm. 61 million dead Americans is obviously not healthcare. It is government advocated mass murder. Abortion is dangerous to the mother s health in a startling variety of ways. Hundreds of women have died during abortions since Roe vs. Wade made the procedure legal. Abortion is a cause of pre-term birth in subsequent pregnancies. 17% of infant deaths are caused by pre-term births, which affect weight, breathing and feeding. The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons meta-analysis shows a statistically significant increase in pre-term birth risk in women with a history of induced abortion. Abortion is reported to cause a significant risk of breast cancer. This is a highly debated issue. There are 29 studies which show a direct link between induced abortion and breast cancer, including a study by the National Cancer Institute (NCI); this study, by Louise Brinton, a bureau chief of the NCI, showed a 40% increase in risk of breast cancer in women who had induced abortions, or used oral contraceptives. Unfortunately The National Cancer Institute suppresses this study, and denies any link between abortion and breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Prevention Institute makes available a lengthy list of peerreviewed studies that debunks the position of the NCI. Abortion causes an 81% increase in the risk of mental health issues. Unfortunately politics enter into all phases of life. The abortion industry is gigantic, with a multibillion dollar per year value. There is enormous pressure, both political and financial, on healthcare organizations to suppress abortion related health information. But the facts are out there with a little research. The American College of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists is an excellent source for true, accurate facts concerning the links between abortion and assorted healthcare issues. Abortion is gravely evil. Make no mistake it is about money. It is the murder of a living human being, helpless, with only the protection of its mother and father, ad it exists for profit. It is protected by the single largest political party in the country, and they protect it for money, for political donations. We must pray constantly to end this evil, and to protect our citizens, both the moms, and the babies, from the rampages of this evil. Pro-Life Novena The U.S. Bishops are asking that all people of good will to join them each Friday from August 3rd to September 28th, in a Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life. To participate in the Novena, sign up at Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel-St. Michael the Archangel, protect us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and ell the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. 5 Princess For a Day, A Reflection of God s Image Forever! Our parish built a home for Fatima (9), her Grandmother Noemi, and her Uncle Nicholas. Fatima and Noemi live in a room where Noemi also cooks tortillas to sell. They were going to move in with Nicholas to the home where he and Noemi grew up but two years ago it was destroyed by an earthquake. Your support of our shoe shining on Share Mercy Sunday paid for their new home. There was money left over and August 2 was Fatima s birthday. The people at Unbound saw that she had a bed already but nowhere to put her clothes. They asked if they could use the extra money to buy her this beautiful wardrobe for her new home as a birthday gift. We had the joy of sharing in the surprise when Fatima saw her gift. She was moved to tears (and so were we). Watching her as she saw her new gift, it was as if she were a princess for the day! She has a mirror! I m not sure if she ever saw her reflection before in her life. But now she can see that she is a reflection of God s image. Fatima now has a home that is her own. She has a place to keep her clothes and she can see her reflection every day. If that s not building the City of God, I don t know what is! THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVING SERVICE ANF FOR THIS AMAZING WORK OF MERCY! Happy Birthday Fatima! - Fr Mike We Invite The heart of our parish mission statement that we pray together before mass every Sunday is the fact that we invite every person to know Jesus Christ, present in the Word and in the breaking of the Bread so that all may accept his gift of salvation. Bishop Barres mentions Dramatic Missionary Growth every time he speaks. Pope Francis says we are all called to be Missionary Disciples - a disciple is a follower of Jesus and a missionary shares Jesus. As we get ready to begin the regular rhythm of the parish (after relaxing in the summer) maybe each one of us can look at our personal response to this call. A little over a year ago at a meeting with the priests and deacons, we spoke about our need to actively invite people to the sacramental life of the church every chance we get (at wakes and funerals, at baptisms and at weddings). Prior to this conversation, I had always tried to be inviting toward people in my attitude during any of these moments. Since then, I have decided to go a little bit farther and to actively invite people to come to the place where heaven and earth meet and to experience the embrace of Jesus in the sacramental life of the church. I have had some success with this, but there is always more work to do. We priests and deacons can only reach so far. We will continue to actively invite when we have moments of contact with people who are not actively involved in church life. But there are plenty more people to invite who just don t have these moments in their lives today. That is where every member of our church comes in. When was the last time you invited someone to come with you to mass? As a teen, my brother and I brought two friends of ours to mass once. Their lack of understanding of our communal prayer and their subsequent behavior was a little embarrassing for us. Years later, as a priest, I was visiting a parish and who should I meet coming out of mass with his wife and children? One of those friends from back in high school. I guess maybe, our visit to church with them sowed some seeds that grew later on in his life and now he is passing it on to his children! Who knows what will come of an invitation you may make? The gospel story of the sower and the seed is a reminder that any one of us could be in different kinds of and quality of soil at any given moment. So we keep on sowing seeds of faith because today may be the day when a loved one is in just the right soil so the invitation can take root in their hearts. We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. That means we are all apostles - sent to spread the good news. We have work to do. Let s all invite someone to be part of church this year!
