5 The Paschal Mystery In The Life Of Our Church Today This was my homily two weeks ago. Many people were moved by it, but I only had one mass in English that weekend. Because of all the comments, I thought I d share it with you all. -Fr Mike The heart of our faith is the paschal mystery Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead for you and me. We are called to follow him even to the cross but we are promised that the resurrection always follows the cross. This is what it is all about yet this is the part that is hard to really get into our bones and really live. Last week I got distracted at mass just as the gospel was being read. Jesus asking, Who do you say that I am? Peter saying, You are the Christ. Then Peter getting into trouble because he doesn t want the cross to be part of it. While this was being read, I got distracted by the windows in the back of the church, but I think they helped me to start to get the mystery a little more and I think they are helping me to stand at the cross that the church is at right now. Take a look at the windows. In the one you have the story of Noah and the Ark. The absolute center of that story is the phrase, God remembered Noah. That is when the rains started to go away, and the water started to recede. God remembered Noah and God remembers us! The rainbow is a sign that God will always remember us. In the other window there is the storm at sea. Do you remember what he said when the disciples saw him walking on water? Don t be afraid! it is I! He was saying, I am with you through the storm through every storm! Then Peter asks Jesus to call him out of the boat, and then he starts to sink because he took his eyes off Jesus. That is always when the trouble happens when we take our eyes off Jesus. Peter took his eyes off Jesus in last week s Gospel. The disciples took their eyes off Jesus in this week s gospel when they started thinking more of greatness rather than service. Ministers in our church took their eyes off Jesus when they abused children and when they covered it up. But let s go back to the stories on these windows. GOD REMEMBERED NOAH! AND GOD REMEMBERS US! We re having a rough time right now in the Catholic Church we re at the cross. But God remembers us. Then what did Jesus say in the storm? DON T BE AFRAID! IT IS I!. He is with us here at this cross. I know he is here with us at this cross because I had a really profound conversation with a parishioner this week about all this stuff that we are going through. It was a painful conversation because this reality is painful. But the faith this woman showed as she asked questions of the church and of our society was a clear sign to me of Jesus presence. Like all of us, she is frustrated and hurt by the scandals we face, but you know what? She heard Jesus voice telling her that he is present and that she should not be afraid and her faithful response to Jesus voice reminded me of his presence. Last week and this week our gospel stories remind us clearly that the mystery of the cross and resurrection are the heart of our faith. We can see from the reaction of Peter and the other disciples that it is easy to take our eyes off Jesus when there are challenges. And the circumstances of our church today can show us how bad things can get if we take our eyes off him. What do we do? We listen to his words from last week Get behind me Satan. Do you know what he was doing when he was saying that? He wasn t just telling him to get away. He was telling him FOLLOW ME! Where are you when you follow someone? Behind them. Jesus was actually calling Satan, created by God, to convert and follow him. So the answer for each one of us as individuals and for all of us as a community is to follow him in good times and in challenging times. We are called to do this without fear because he is always with us he remembers us and will get us through every storm he won t take it away he will get us through it. The center of our faith is the paschal mystery Jesus dying on the cross and rising from the dead for you and for me. You and I are called to follow him even on the path that is the way of the cross. So now, as we face some of the most difficult days our church has faced, you and I are called to remain faithful to Jesus to keep our eyes on him. I am grateful for all of you who remain faithful, coming to Jesus even in our struggles because you witness to me. When we struggle, I would suggest that we look up at those two windows in the back of our church. They will help because they remind us that God will never forget us and he is always with us. Be not afraid. Start Searching Your Memory As we mark 50 years of praying together in our church building, we want to look back and look forward. Looking Back: We want your parish memories, so start gathering them in your hearts (and maybe in your old photo albums). Looking forward: We know we are a multi-cultural parish, so we want to invite all of our parishioners who grew up in another country or culture, to gather your memories and stores as well. We will collect them all and put them on our social media as well as in a journal to celebrate the many facets of what it means to be part of this parish that is truly an expression of the Universal Church. Knowing about our many cultural experiences of being Catholic will help us to grow in the future! We hope to have a multi cultural celebration in the spring as we look to our next 50 years of praying together!
