1 Glorify God Through Instruction A WORD FROM PASTOR STEVE Last week I read a quote by Charlie Tremendous Jones that was located on the bottom of a picture of Mr. Jones and hanging in the library of Lancaster Bible College. The LBC library is named The Charles and Gloria Jones Library and the picture hangs in his memory. The quote reads, Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. I saw the same quote online with these words added, Choose both carefully. Choose carefully the people you meet and the books you read. Why? We can answer that by throwing a few clichés out there that we are probably quite familiar with. Garbage in, garbage out. No one who plays in a manure pile comes out smelling like a rose. God has not called us to be the same person in five years. We re not even to be the same person tomorrow or next week. We are to become more like our precious Lord and Savior Jesus each and every day. How do we do that? Charlie Tremendous Jones has given us some sage advice for this journey. Let s look at two points in his quote and note what God has to say. Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for the people you meet.. Proverbs 14:9 Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is favor. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 15:2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaim foolishness. Proverbs 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed. Ecclesiastes 10:12 The words of a wise man are gracious, but the lips of a fool shall swallow him up. God s Word speaks loudly concerning two types of people; the wise and the foolish. This isn t to say we don t invest into the lives of others who may be living foolishly, but we must July 2014 be mindful and ever vigilant concerning those who we would permit to invest into our lives. Do you have a more mature believer pouring into your life? If not, pray and ask God to provide someone to do just that. Someone who will lead by example, ask the tough questions, offer wise and biblical counsel, love when love is needed and provide a kick in the shorts when that is the required remedy. The second point in the quote says, Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for the books you read.. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. Psalm 119:11 Your word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 111:2 The works of the Lord are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them. Proverbs 15:28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil. Psalm 119:97 O how I love Thy law! It is my meditation all the day. Are you studying God s Word each day? After you spend time in God s Word are you taking time to read other books as well? Husbands and wives, read through a biblically based marriage book at least once a year. Parents, take time to read through a biblically based parenting book from time to time. Check out biblically based books on finances, social issues, etc. Read books with your children. Read books to help you understand God s Word more fully. A stream that is not moving is stagnant and stagnant begins to stale and stink. Commit now to putting into practice what Charlie Tremendous Jones has challenged others to do. Beyond that, desire to glorify God through your personal relationships and your study of His Word and the reading of wisdom He has granted to other men and women. Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. Choose both carefully.

2 Meet OUR DEACONS Stan and Betty Lou Stull will be married 55 years this September. They have lived in the Red Lion area for 4 years. Stan had worked for Exide Battery Co. as Director of Training in the Willard Division. Betty Lou uses her free time as homemaker and designing and making quilts. Stan serves on the board of CEF, helps in two weekly Good News Clubs in York Co. schools and teaches in the Adult Sunday School. Betty Lou and Stan both accepted Christ at the York Gospel Center in Since than Betty Lou has enjoyed singing in choirs and looks forward to again joining GBC's choir. Stan was encouraged to get more training and attended LBC at night for three years finishing full time at Bible Institute of New England in VT. He worked in a local church as youth pastor at that time. A verse that the Lord has used in Stan's life is Jeremiah 1:7-8, But the Lord said unto me, Say not... for you shall go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command you, you shall speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with you to deliver you saith the Lord. Biblical Blurb: GROUNDHOG ALLUREMENT The young groundhog wanted to see the town. Nothing could stop his curiosity, so he left the meadow and waddled toward the lights. While cruising the alleys he pondered the back yards and their beautiful gardens of vegetables and flowers, thinking, "I can eat whenever and wherever I desire". Suddenly he noticed one yard had a wooden fence surrounding it. "What's behind the fence", he thought. The mystery and allurement drew him to a hole in the fence. "Maybe I shouldn't go in", but the desire for unknown pleasures drew him into the yard. Inside the house, three young girls had just finished breakfast and were eager to go outside and play. Just as Groundhog was about to chomp down on some sweet peas, the girls charged out the backdoor screaming and shrieking at the top of their lungs. They were excited at the thought of a lovely summer morning and play time. The much startled groundhog jumped up, spun around, ran to and fro, then crashed head first into the wooden fence. Totally panicked, he found the hole and zipped back to the meadow. He learned to be content with the essentials that God has provided. The root of covetousness is the rejection of God's sufficiency. Like the groundhog that was seeking non-essentials, we might hate what we 'had' to have. Is enough ever enough? Is your 'good book' a catalog? Do you love things or people? Do you desire more things for the future or do you want to impact people for Christ? Be willing to repent and change directions. Dump the temporary for the eternal. The fields are ripe for harvest. JOHN 4. REMEMBER OUR SHUT-INS Pray for our shut-ins, send a card, make a phone call, pay a visit (call first), make a meal and deliver it or stay and eat with them, pick up groceries / medicines. 3 STAR SPANGLED BANNER During the War of 1812 on the deck of a truce ship Francis Key (pastor/poet/statesman) nervously paced as the fierce battle raged during the British attack on the harbor of Baltimore. Key was sent by President James Madison to seek the release of a physician prisoner. All night Key and his party were detained as heavy bombardment continued. When firing quickly stopped just before morning Key was fearful of the outcome. As he looked across the water, he saw the American flag still flying the assurance of our nation s freedom. With joyful relief Key wrote his poem on the back of an envelope and finished it that evening after being released. Thus was born the Star Spangled Banner, adopted by Congress as our National anthem on March 3, O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave o er the land of the free and home of the brave! Tips for Family Bible Study While there are no definitive techniques or methods to family Bible study that will apply to every family, here are some general principles. First, remember to set aside a specific day and time for your family Bible study and stick to it as best you can. Young children in particular appreciate regular schedules and routines. If your family can get into a habit of having a regular Bible study time, you'll find that your children will often come to appreciate it and miss it if it doesn't happen as scheduled. Second, keep your family Bible study times relatively short. This is particularly important if there are young children in your family. Older children in general have better attention spans, while younger children don't. Third, pick an area, passage or topic of study that is helpful and relevant without being too difficult or challenging for children to grasp. So, for instance, you really don't want to have a family Bible study about the Documentary hypothesis and its implications regarding biblical inerrancy! But a topical study about specific biblical figures might be a good place to start, such as learning about Noah, Moses, David, Jesus, etc. This should be fairly straightforward and simple, sharing perhaps some key biblical stories about these individuals. You may wish to find a good children's Bible and read some stories from that edition. Pick some short biblical passages to read too. If your children are old enough to read, help them read certain passages aloud so they are actively engaged in your study time. Below are several family Bible study tips offered by Pastor Donald Hoke: Keep your family Bible study reasonably short. Have each member read a verse. Appoint one family member to lead in worship. After reading the passage, have each member in the family explain one verse or one paragraph. After the Bible reading, have each member tell what this verse means or how it can be applied to personal life. Fourth, you'll also want to include prayer in your family Bible study. Pray as you are moved to before your study time and perhaps during and after. ~by Robert Velarde, Focus on the Family CHURCH ADDRESS When ing the church, please use the following address: gracebaptistyork@comcast.net Do not reply to Hotline s.
