3 YOU HAVE MADE US FOR YOURSELF, O GOD, AND OUR HEARTS ARE RESTLESS UNTIL THEY REST IN YOU [St Augustine, THE CONFESSIONS] As we settle in now for the summer months, our children are out of their normal school routine. (I know that a lot of kids go to summer school these days, but for old fogies like this writer, the idea of summer school struck us with terror, because it meant we had failed during the year and now had to make up our work by being in school while everyone else was out playing in the park and doing all kinds of other summer fun activities.) In some ways, summer is a time when parents truly are the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith the words spoken to parents at the time they presented their children for Baptism. At the risk of being stoned to death with marshmallows I offer some suggestions about things which parents might teach their children in their growing-up years. These are hardly original or unknown to parents, but sometimes it helps to be reminded of the basics. So here are some ideas that come to my mind. One of the most important things to teach our children is that life is a great gift. Albert Einstein, the celebrated scientist of the 20 th century, once said, The man who has lost the faculty of being in wonder and struck with reverence is dead, as it were. One of the best things we can teach our children is to say a short prayer each morning when they wake up: Thank you, heavenly Father, for the gift of another day. I welcome whatever you have in store for me today, for I know that everything I am or have comes from You. Beginning the day with such an attitude opens the door to appreciating the wonder of life, with a sense of reverence. Another teaching for our children: you are valuable not because you are the center of the world and everything has to revolve around what you want, but because your loving God, the true Center of everything, created you and loves you, and wants you to share in His life of joy and happiness. This remains true even when you are not living the way God teaches you to live. When you live in a way that rejects God s teaching, you are moving away from God s love. He won t force you to love Him against your will, even though His love for you never changes. Don t walk away from God s love for you. A third lesson: we are made for happiness, but a lot of things in life only appear to bring happiness; they don t produce what they seem to promise. Sometimes they make us feel good for a time, but what we really want in the end can only be fulfilled when we are sharing the life of God. You will be happy if you you enjoy the good things of earthly life without expecting them to provide the full happiness for which your heart yearns. A fourth lesson: life is a great adventure, and like all great adventures it has it successes and failures, its joys and sorrows, its challenges and its triumphs. We can always learn something from every experience in our life, and as most athletes will tell you, it s often the times of failure that show us how to succeed. Teach your children, especially by your example, how to pray and to worship God. All the research shows that families that pray together experience the most satisfaction in life. Don t neglect your family prayer. Finally, remember that the most important thing that happens in the world is what is happening somewhere at every moment: Mass is being celebrated to enable people to offer right worship to God. At Mass Jesus plugs us in to the event which saved the world, His obedient, life-giving death on the cross. To attend Mass every Sunday is not a burden, but a privilege. It is God saying, See how much I love you, and asking you, Do you love me in return? Our presence at Mass and our reception of Holy Communion says Yes! to God s love. April 27, 2018 WASHINGTON Catholics across the United States are encouraged to pray and act in support of religious liberty at home and abroad during Serving Others in God's Love: Religious Freedom Week 2018, which begins on June 22, the Feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, and ends on June 29, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. The chairman of the USCCB's Committee for Religious Liberty, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, states: "Religious freedom allows the space for people of faith to serve others in God's love in ministries like education, adoption and foster care, health care, and migration and refugee services. We encourage people of faith to reflect on the importance of religious freedom so that we might have the space to carry out our mission of service and mercy, and we invite everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters who face intense persecution in other parts of the world." Resources for Religious Freedom Week and other religious liberty resources can be found at ReligiousFreedomWeek and DIOCESAN Safe Environment Program-To volunteer or to help out in any church events, you must fill out and complete all diocesan forms on the Safe Environment. A new form is online for Guidelines for Youth and Those Working with Youth Receipt Acknowledgment. This is an updated version and needs to be filled out again. Please have these forms in by June 18th. Call the parish office for any questions. These form can be found on the Diocesan website or call the parish office to get the forms needed. Thank you. Thank you to the OUTSTANDING choir, a combination of SS Peter & Paul, St. Mary, and the Filipino ministry. Thank to all who came and provided food for Father party! Your generosity is much appreciated! Thank you to Kevin Miller, Pat Miller, & Brian Prievost for the awesome music! I was speechless with the way our church community came together to show Father how grateful we are in all that he has done for our parish and his other ministries. He was certainly overjoyed!
