1 OUR MISSION: To learn, live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ PADUA PRESS St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Clarksville, Indiana Quarterly Publication September 2016 Thank you for your support from Fr. Joe Time, talent and treasure is the catchphrase for stewardship in the Catholic Church. Each has a distinct focus, but blended together they allow us to live balanced, well rounded Christian lives. Time is time given to God: in worship at church and prayer at home. It includes reading the Bible and other books which enhance our faith and understanding of our God, his Church and our response to God s grace. While praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked Peter; Could you not keep watch one hour with me? Christ did not want Peter and the others to do anything as much as he wanted their time and attention. Talent is work given to God s Church. The focus here is not so much the time it takes as the action given to the well-being of the community. It is offering a sacrifice to God. Though the word talent is used, quite often what needs to be done requires little skill or ability. Treasure is our tithe, a percentage of our income offered to assist the needs of the Church and it s mission. This tends to make a little more sacred the otherwise secular jobs we may have. We convert our labors into the work of living and spreading the Gospel. Our stewardship process at St. Anthony is different this year. We are focusing on the four areas most in need of volunteers right now. We have other needs listed, but if we have a good response in these four areas, we will be well set for the coming year. To our parish school families, these areas are good opportunities to fulfill your 24 hours of stewardship each school year. Please turn to page 2 to see the areas in which we can use your help. 2 The four areas most in need of volunteers right now. 1) The Heavenly Dusters clean the church weekly on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 10:00am. Each team usually does this 4 5 times a year. Can you help us now by contributing just 6 8 hours a year to your church? We are in need of about 28 more people! Many hands make light work. 2) Children s Ministries during the 11:00am Sunday Mass is in need of adult volunteers to help with children from age one through fourth grade. If you are high energy and enthusiastic this may be a good fit for you! Additionally every summer we need help with Vacation Bible School (VBS) in late June. Volunteers for both programs must complete the Safe and Sacred training. 3) The Adult Choir helps us all sing at the 11:00am Mass on the 2nd and 4th (and 5th) Sunday of the month. Practice is held on Sunday mornings at 9:30 10:30am. You do not need a solo quality voice to sing in a choir; and, as I like to say, if God gave you a lousy voice, make him listen to it! 4) Parish Picnic workers are needed every year, but especially on Saturday, June 17, We want to recruit volunteers now. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Social Hall. Please mark your calendars for both of these dates. Help is also needed with: 5a) Padua Perks, on the 1st Sunday of the month (at noon), needs help with both set up and clean up. 5b) The Parish Office can use your help preparing mailings a few times a year and answering the phones on occasion. You will be receiving a letter and a card in the mail like the one shown here. Please review these requests and see what you can do. October is Stewardship Month from Fr. 5 I am really excited to have the students back on the campus for another eventful school year. Youth Ministry sponsors several awesome events and activities throughout the year for junior high, high school, and even college students, but there are a few events that truly stand out as possible life changers for the participants. I would like to highlight two of those experiences: March for Life in Washington, DC and the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), held in Indianapolis. March for Life Youth Ministry News from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister Several participants who have attended this 4-day event in previous years were very moved by the experience. It s not every day that thousands of Catholic youth come together during the cold Washington, DC winter and march for life. Our journey begins when dozens of New Albany Deanery youth and chaperones load into multiple passenger vans and take a road trip to Washington, DC. This event is way more than a simple march through the streets of our nation s capital to celebrate the dignity of human life during the anniversary of Roe vs Wade. There are also many other activities involved in this crusade. We attend Mass, participate in adoration, visit the Basilica, and even go to the Smithsonian, and get our pictures taken at the White House, Washington Monument and many other historic places. All of this happens while they are with thousands of other high school students from around the country. The next March for Life will be held in Washington, DC on January 27, For more information about this trip, please contact Stacy Gillenwater at or via at stayouth22@gmail.com. National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) This youth conference is held every other year and takes place in November. The next NCYC will be in Indianapolis on November 16 19, What is NCYC? The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) is a powerful, biennial, three-day experience of prayer, community, and empowerment for Catholic teenagers (of high-school age) and their adult chaperones. The schedule includes keynote presentations, prayer, workshops, liturgy, and opportunities to participate in reconciliation and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as recreational activities, concerts, and exhibits. A key component of NCYC is the thematic park which is a blend of traditional exhibit booths with interactive areas featuring service projects, games, recreation, live musical performances, arts and sports. NCYC is sponsored by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, Inc. (NFCYM). Visit the NCYC web page at to learn more. What does NCYC as a pilgrimage experience mean? Attending NCYC is more than just a vacation, it can be a lifechanging experience. The goals of a pilgrimage, especially for youth, should reflect the general goals for youth ministry found in Renewing the Vision. As a reminder, those goals are: To draw young people into responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community, To empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today, and To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. continued on the next page PADUA PRESS September

6 Youth Ministry News from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) continued Why attend the NCYC? Youth and their adult chaperones attend NCYC because they want to: Gather together with other Catholic youth on a national level; Learn more about themselves and their relationship to God, and the Catholic Church; Celebrate their Catholic faith; Meet thousands of other Catholic youth; Share beliefs and experiences; and Recognize their role in the life of the Catholic Church. An information meeting about NCYC for youth and parents will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at noon in the South Social Hall. If you are even partially interested in going to NCYC, then you won t want to miss this meeting! NCYC Information packets for high school students will be available in 2017 on the Youth Ministry News Board and on the parish website look under Youth Ministry: High School. We are excited to host our first Father/Daughter Dance (Kindergarten through 8th grade) on February 17, from 6:00pm till 8pm. Fathers (or a special male role model) get to spend a wonderful evening with their daughter(s) for dinner, dancing, photos and special bonding! The event will be held in the Social Hall at St. Anthony. Tickets are $30 per father. More information will be forthcoming as the event date approaches. Mark your calendars now! St. Anthony Youth Ministry invites you to get involved! After school activities include Drop In, Cooking Sessions, and Art Classes. During the year you can sing with the Student Choir, Minister at Mass, or join the Leadership Team for Youth Ministry. Many service opportunities are available throughout the year: Food Fast, Ten for $10, Summer Daze, Fall/Winter Daze, and many more. We love new and returning participants to every activity and event. 6 September 2016 PADUA PRESS

7 The safety of all who visit, learn and work at St. Anthony Church and School is always of first importance. This summer we completed a few safety upgrades to the school building and grounds to supplement the procedures and training the staff, teachers and students have already received. I do not think it wise to publish all our equipment and procedures, but I would like to point out a few things which you may notice. Someone suggested we are doing these things because we are in a bad neighborhood. This is not so. Our neighborhood has not changed much, but we all know our world has changed and bad things have happened at a few churches, schools and public places. Prudence demands we be attentive and prepared for possible threats. Some months ago we began by tinting the windows of the school annex where the lower grades are located, making it difficult for a would be intruder to see into the building. We discovered this tinting made the classrooms so much cooler in the warm weather we extended it to the upper floors of the main building as well. Now we have the added benefit of being a little more energy efficient. Anyone entering the school during the day has always had to be let in (or buzzed in) with the electronic lock on the front door. All other exterior doors are locked during the school day. Utilizing equipment already in place for the fire alarm and containment system, we have added a lockdown system which can be activated by staff members from Safety First from Fr. Joe several locations, even from outside the school. When activated, this system immediately notifies the police we are experiencing an emergency, it releases and closes the interior hallway and stairwell doors which then lock. This compartmentalizes the building and inhibits anyone other than staff from moving into another area of the building; yet anyone can exit the building at any time. It has been tested and it works; the Clarksville police arrived within two minutes. They were impressed with our system. We began last school year with new doors and electronic locks on the church. Parents and family are always welcome to join us for the weekly all-school Mass in church. But be aware that with all the children in one location, all the church doors are now locked when all the classes have arrived (locked to the outside only, one can always exit). So join us but please arrive before 8 am. This summer, just after school started, a six foot tall, 180 foot long, chain link fence was erected at the northwest end of our property (out past the playground near the tree line) to reduce the amount of trespassing on our property through the playground and football practice field. Each end of the fence abuts against a neighbor s fence. We believe these measures, taken to ensure the safety of the most vulnerable among us, are both discreet and significant. We are ever mindful of opportunities to enhance safety. It is a sad reality which makes all this necessary, so let us pray for peace and strive for peace in ourselves, in our homes and in our community. May God bless us, every one! Tax Credit Scholarship for 2016 You are able to support children by taking advantage of the Tax Credit Scholarship offered through the Institute for Quality Education (IQE). This program makes scholarships available to families who want to enroll their children in a Catholic school, but find this to be a financial challenge. Your gift means: An education that combines Catholic faith and teachings with academic excellence A parent and teacher partnership in faith formation High standards for student achievement and success Opportunities to instill the value of service to others In return, you receive: A 50% Indiana State Tax Credit The ability to designate your gift to the Catholic school of your choice The knowledge that you provided tuition assistance to a student who needs your support If you are interested in taking advantage of the 2016 tax credit by making a IQE Scholarship donation, contact Sheila Noon at St. Anthony School PADUA PRESS September
