OUR MISSION: To learn, live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ PADUA PRESS St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Clarksville, Indiana Quarterly Publication October 2018 As we begin our annual stewardship renewal, we take as our theme this beautiful simple declaration from the book of Joshua 24:15 which we heard on the 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time the last Sunday of August. As we re-evaluate the use of our As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. time, talent and treasure, I am calling on members of St. Anthony of Padua to take ownership of your parish household! This is your parish, many of you built it, or your parents and grandparents built it. It is yours. It is yours to be proud of and take care of. If you are new to the parish I pray that you are beginning to make it your spiritual home. Pastors, bishops and other staff come and go. It is you and your families who remain decade after decade. The parish (and at this juncture, due to recently revealed events, I will even say the whole universal Church) needs each member to step up and take ownership so that the reigns of responsibility are not held by only a few. And so the following information is offered to help you be the best stewards you can be. I hope you will respond as you make your pledge this year. 1) The Parish Council used to be filled by holding public elections. We stopped when we reached the point of having over 50 people nominated but when contacted, 48 declined to be put on a ballot. It was frustrating. We have a Parish Council made of dedicated individuals who in turn seek out those they think may have something to contribute. Members are replaced but slowly. Would you consider serving on the parish council? 2) The Buildings and Grounds Committee needs skilled tradesmen not so much to do the work around the parish (well, maybe a little) but because we need your expertise added to our discussions and decision making. Can you give us one hour a month on the third Thursday? 3) Weekly Giving has fallen from $743,173 the previous year to $695,550 this past fiscal year: a drop of $47,623. I have been saying that we are doing OK financially and that everyone should keep doing what they were doing. I am afraid that some took this as permission to cut back. With about 270 households donating weekly this is an average annual drop of $176 per household or an average of $3.40 per house each week. For the sake of your parish, please review and renew your financial commitment. Please increase your weekly or monthly giving by a reasonable amount you can afford. I don t want anybody giving until it hurts. I recommend giving until it feels really good! 4) Worshiping God and serving him is what we live for; the Church is not about councils, committees and money, though these are necessary to accomplish its purpose. There are numerous other ways everyone can contribute to the good of this church community and witness their faith to others. continued on page 2 PADUA PRESS October 2018

Annual Stewardship Renewal continued Catholics are, generally speaking, afraid of showing off when it comes to their religion, and this humility is commended by Christ in the Gospels. But Mass is precisely the place to demonstrate and act out our faith in the most profound ways. I urge you to be an active participant at Mass. It would add greatly to the beauty of our worship if everyone would commit to following some of these suggestions at the weekend Masses. ~ Make the pre-mass moments a prayerful time. Some people talk much too loudly before Mass. If you have a hard time hearing others, chances are that no one has difficulty hearing you! You will be receiving a letter and a card in the mail like the one shown below. If you are already participating in a ministry, please list it on the back of the Intention Card. We ask you to bring your card to Mass with you on the weekend of October 20 & 21, 2018 and we will make our pledge together at the altar of God. Thank you for answering the call, Fr. Joseph West, OFM Conv. ~ Singing the songs and responding to the Mass parts enthusiastically, whether sung or spoken. ~ Read the scripture texts in the Breaking Bread hymnal or missal before Mass begins, every Sunday s readings are organized by calendar date. ~ Move forward and claim a pew toward the front of the church. Moving up just four pews will give you a whole new perspective. ~ Before and after Mass, close your eyes and enjoy a few moments of peace. Give thanks to God for all he has done, unload your burdens and share your hopes. The school children pray before and after the Wednesday Mass so they are used to it. The whole family will benefit from a few moments of quiet prayer. Combined, all these things will drive out boredom, welcome the Holy Spirit, and make for a more joyful, vibrant and prayerful liturgy for each of us. This in turn witnesses to visitors and others what the Gospel can do for everyone. These things may seem trivial, but deep life-giving prayer often revolves around the simplest of actions. No, we don t want to put on a show, yet visitors may decide whether or not to come back depending on what they see in us. We may like to hold our faith close and keep it to ourselves, even consider it a private matter; now is not the time for that. We must let our faith shine forth. This too is stewardship. 2 October 2018 PADUA PRESS

Youth Ministry News from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister Vacation Bible School was a tremendous success this year with 100 kiddos attending the four day event, ranging from 4 year old pre-school to those attending 6th grade. I am very excited that over 50 St. Anthony parish volunteers came together before, during and after this year s event so that our young church could participate in this great experience. This year s Vacation Bible School theme was Shipwrecked... Rescued by Jesus! Many high school and college parishioners stepped up long before Vacation Bible School started to help with many important preparatory duties, such as painting several scenes for the rooms and preparing decorations. Some of those duties took many weeks to complete. Several adult volunteers also helped out by manning various stations, keeping the kiddos moving and organized, chaperoning, etc. Since we had 20 small groups of children with two volunteer leaders per group, there was a lot for each volunteer to learn prior to Vacation Bible School starting. But it worked out wonderfully! There is no way I could have possibly pulled this off without the help of so many willing volunteers. I ve been asked a few times by people who were not able to witness Shipwrecked how it was presented, so I ll explain. 4 October 2018 PADUA PRESS Each day, once the kids signed in, they would join the Vacation Bible School volunteer crew in the South Hall for live skits & music presented by Abbi Hamm, Josh Frost and Jeff Wagner. Those three were full of energy and passion, which got the kids pumped up early each session. There were several different interactive stations of Shipwrecked that the kids would visit each day, all with a tropical setting. For example, one of the stations was Bible Discovery, where Jamie Huber would engage the children with interactive, teachable aspects of the bible. At another station, Jessica Coons managed the Kids Video Cinema where she showed a video depicting a refugee story. Jessica took time to use the story and the shipwrecked theme as a teaching moment to show the kids how we are all called to help others. Olivia Orberson and Julie Bottorff helped the children make a craft and tied it to a theme-based lesson at the Imagination station. Ship Rec Games had Jessica Lenfert playing Ships and Sailors and other various games.

BREAKING NEWS: Vacation Bible School Changing to a NEW Program Called Totus Tuus Next Year Of course there was theme of the day Snack Area, managed by Jill Ellis and Kathy Lenfert. Each day, once the kids were finished with all of their stations, they reassembled into a large group for closing songs and a recap of the day. They were also given a bit of a preview of the next day s activities to keep them excited. We held a special closing ceremony on the final night were parents and family members got to watch the kiddos perform some special songs in church. There are far too many people to thank individually, but I want to give a special shout out to the parents who found it important to allow their children to grow in their faith and get to know Jesus Christ a little better in a fun environment. Totus Tuus is a summer Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic Faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness and Eucharistic worship. Our week-long Parish Summer Catechetical Program assists parents and parishes in the evangelizing and catechizing of their youth by supplementing the work they are currently doing. The methodology, structure, content, and enthusiasm of Totus Tuus is concerned not only with teaching the Faith, but also igniting the hearts of the team members and the young people they encounter. The result has been the formation of young adults who continue to dedicate themselves to the Church s mission of evangelization along with many vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The mission of Totus Tuus is to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion and an openness to their vocation by the constant challenge to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her. Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning Totally Yours, was the motto of Blessed John Paul II. Taken from St. Louis de Montfort s True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary. It also expresses our effort to give our all to every young person we encounter. Through the teams example of joy and service, the youth witness these men and women on fire with the Catholic Faith and long for the same thing in their lives. More information about Totus Tuus will be coming in the Spring of Our Confirmandi will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at 2:00 pm Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Sacred Heart in Jeffersonville. Please keep them in your prayers as they wait for the Holy Spirit. 6 Youth Ministry News from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister teens wanted January 22, 2019 marks the 46th anniversary of the tragic U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe v. Wade. Since then there have been nearly 60 MILLION U.S. children aborted. Globally that number is almost 2 BILLION! We are calling on ALL High School aged students of the deanery to join us this January as we march in D.C. to give voice to the voiceless. as President Trump, who spoke to the activists via satellite. House Speaker Paul Ryan also spoke, as did Pam Tebow (the mother of Tim Tebow, a former NFL quarterback who played for the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets). The March s 45th year is the first that organizers shared official numbers. It is estimated that 100,000 people attended the March on January 19, Here we are at the 46th year we never anticipated that we would be here for so long. Today, we grieve the loss of life, but it s also an enthusiastic time; we re changing hearts and minds. ~ Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life The striking thing about the crowd? Almost a quarter of those folks were high school and college kids. The March for Life is largely made up of young people who travel from all across the nation to stand up for life. They are vibrant, passionate, and knowledgeable. The March for Life is the nation s largest annual pro-life event. The event protests Roe v. Wade, but also works throughout the year to educate Americans about the biggest human rights abuse of today, of our time, Mancini said. March for Life 2018 included some notable speakers, such Hold Fast! from Fr. Joe These last few months have been challenging for the Catholic Church to say the least. Personally, I have taken comfort in some things said by Dorothy Day ( ), an American journalist, social activist, and convert who is being promoted for Canonization. I found them on a blog by David Mills, a Catholic author: I love the Church with all my heart and soul. I never go inside a church without thanking God almighty for giving me a home. The Church is my home, and I don t want to be homeless I have never wanted to challenge the Church, only be part of it, [and] in return, receive its love and mercy, and the mercy and love of Jesus. 6 October 2018 PADUA PRESS ~ Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life Don t miss out on being there to march with other New Albany teens on behalf of those can t speak for themselves. Questions? Contact Stacy Gillenwater at As a convert, I never expected much of bishops. In all history, popes and bishops seem to have been blind and power-loving and greedy. I never expected leadership from them. It is the saints that keep appearing all through history who keep things going. What I do expect is the Bread of Life and through the ages there is that continuity. I, like most of you, have made the Church my home because it is the Body of Christ which allows those who truly in their heart and soul become one with it to transcend their corrupt nature and claim their rightful place as children of God. Even when its leaders commit crimes, sin and give scandal, the Church always belongs first and foremost to Christ! We must never allow anyone to take that away from us!

Will you help provide financial aid for students to attend SAS? The Institute for Quality Education (IQE) is the largest of six approved scholarship granting organizations (SGO) in Indiana. Since the beginning of this program, SGOs have awarded more than $48 million in scholarships for nearly 38,000 Hoosier students in partnership with nearly 300 private schools throughout the state. IQE donors are responsible for nearly half of those scholarship donations. Indiana s Tax Credit Scholarship program was created in 2009 as a way to give families who meet income guidelines an opportunity to send their child to a participating private school. Through the generosity of Hoosiers like you, private donations are given as scholarships so students may attend a private school that may not have been an option to them otherwise. Is there a limit to how much I can give and still receive the tax credit? No, provided the donation does not exceed the available credits under the cap. The state has allocated $14 million for fiscal year and resets annually on July 1. ACT NOW before credits expire. Why donate? Donors receive a state tax credit of 50% of their donation amount! In addition to supporting Indiana students and giving them access to a high-quality education they may not have received otherwise, Indiana donors receive a state tax credit of 50% of their donation amount. Donations also qualify as a charitable deduction on federal tax returns. How do I donate to IQE? Donations must be directed to Institute for Quality Education in order to receive tax credit, not to your school or church. Donations may be made via cash, checks, credit/debit cards, or publicly traded securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds). Who receives the scholarships? Can I designate a school or student to receive my gift? Indiana K-12 students who meet income eligibility guidelines and attend a participating school can receive the scholarship. You may designate your gift to a specific school, but not to a specific student. Visit You may either use the form below and mail it with your check made payable to the Institute for Quality Education or make an online donation at If you are interested in taking advantage of the 2018 tax credit by making a IQE Scholarship donation and would like more information, contact Stephany Tucker at St. Anthony School The Institute For Quality Education is a 501(c)3 charity which provides tuition assistance to low-income students.
