Carmel Baptist Church began with a small group of thirteen people who met in 1882 to establish a church in West Philadelphia where they could worship God in the Baptist tradition. Speared by the dedication of the congregation under the positive leadership of 8 pastors, the church has grown and prospered now for 135 years. During the early years, there were several physical moves before a permeant location and name for the church was determined. The early ministersrev. Lewis Tyler ( ); Rev. Napper H. Hester( ); Rev. Lewis G. Jordan ( ); Rev. G. C. Coleman ( ); and Rev. Daniel W. Wisher ( ), contributed greatly to uniting the congregation and building a foundation for a strong Mt. Carmel church. Leadership stability began with the 19 year tenure of Rev. Thomas D. Atkins ( ). Under the pastoral guidance of Rev Atkins, church membership increased, many debts were paid off and the first pipe organ was purchased. Rev. Dr. Dennie W. Hoggard was called to the church in 1932 and lead the congregation for 31 years ( ). Rev. Hoggard directed several church beautification and expansion programs. The church edifice was enlarged; new pews, stained glass windows and a new pipe organ were a few of the changes that occurred in the sanctuary. Rev. Hoggard stressed the need for community involvement programs. Mt. Carmel purchased ad administered the program at the Robert Wood Home for Children. The church also conducted a nursery and daycare program in the church. Mt Carmel became known as The Church in the Heart of West Philadelphia, for the Hearts and Hands of the People. Rev. Dr. Albert F. Campbell guided Mt. Carmel or 47 plus years ( ). Under his superior leadership, Mt. Carmel has been a beacon of light not only in this community but throughout these United States of America. On September 27, 2014, the Rev. Dr. Donald D. Moore was called by the congregation of the historic Mt. Carmel Baptist Church to serve as its ninth Pastor. Dr. Moore is a native of Wilmington, NC. He is married to the lovely Dr. Pamela Moore. As pastor, Dr. Moore assumed the pastoral role and responsibilities for a congregation and church with a vibrant and rich history. During his 3 years now as pastor, Mt. Carmel has created viable partnerships with the Univ. of PA and Children s Hospital of Phila. (CHOP) along with Chosen 300 Ministries. Expanding the role of the church that serves it s membership and the community. For 135 years Mt. Carmel has served the people and community of West Phila. The impact of today s many spiritual and social issues intensifies the desire of Mt. Carmel to move forward as One Church Working Together.

3 Message From The Co-Chairs Today we celebrate our 135th Church Anniversary. We salute all of our ministries and all of the work you do throughout the year. Your faithful service allows us to fulfill our mission to meet the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of our membership and community; and our mantra of being the Hearts and Hands of West Philadelphia. We thank our Pastor Reverend Dr. Donald D. Moore for your leadership and guidance. You are the under shepherd of our flock and we appreciate all you do. We would like to thank our sub-committee chairs for all of your hard work this year! We would also like to thank our general committee members for all of your hard work and we could not have done this without you. Lastly, to our honorees, we thank you for your service. We believe in giving people their flowers while they can still appreciate them. We honor you for the unselfish service to your church and all those whose lives you ve touched. Austin, Sr. Trustee Karen Hayes Worship Service Marshall Movie Outing Homecoming Men s Day Worship Service Anniversary Bulletin Homecoming Men s Day Women s Day Women s Day Homecoming Kendall McArthur Kimberly Smith The Reverend Doctor William Saxe Epps, a native of Rochester, New York began his tenure at Second Baptist Church, Los Angeles on Thursday, October 1, 1987, and was installed as the eighth pastor of Second Baptist on Sunday, January 31, His preparation for the ministry began with a Bachelor of Science degree from Bishop College, Dallas, Texas in 1966; a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary, New York in 1969 and a Master of Education degree from Columbia University, New York City in He received the Doctor of Ministry degree at St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland in He also studied at Andover-Newton Theological Seminary and Boston University in Massachusetts. The Reverend Doctor Epps came to Second Baptist, LA after completing a four year stay at the historic Second Baptist Church of Detroit, MI. During his tenure at Second- Detroit, the sanctuary of the church was completely renovated, the "Underground Railroad Station" was restored and remodeled as a tourist attraction and programmatic councils were formed which oversee the programs of the church. It was during his pastorate of Second Baptist that he received his Doctor of Ministry degree from St. Mary's Seminary. Before going to Second Baptist Detroit, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, NC. Prior to First Baptist, he served as minister of Calvary Baptist Church, Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was Assistant Minister of Abyssinian Baptist Church, New York City, He has also taught Old Testament at the Northern Baptist School of Religion in Newark, New Jersey. His secular experiences include public school teaching in Massachusetts and New York and a position on the Congressional Staff of the late Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., in He also served as an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of District Nine in the New York City Public Schools. His current civic and community activities include: Commissioner the Affordable Housing Commission of Los Angeles, and member of the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board of Managers (New York City). The Reverend Doctor Epps participates in the Baptist World Alliance, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, The National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc., and the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A. The Reverend Epps is married to the former Agretta Denise Holloway for the past 35 years. They are the parents of two daughters, Dr. Jacqueline Jeannelle Epps Spivey, Ph.D. and Andrea Nichole Epps, Esq. and the grandparents of Mickey, Bella, Maasai, William and Kamau.

8 Health Ministry News CALLING ALL FEMALES OF MOUNT CARMEL Did you know that heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other abnormalities that attack our body can be prevented by just giving up our sedentary lives. The opposite of that means getting up and moving. The summer days were quite hot and uncomfortable for exercise, but what excuse do we have now? The days are cooler and the environment is beautiful, with the changing of the leaves. Here s a challenge for the ladies of Mount Carmel. It is called "THE GIRL TREK MOVEMENT." The MOVEMENT is challenging all women and girls to a 40 day, 30 minute daily walk, which started Sunday, October 15th and will continue until Thanksgiving Day. Not only are they asking us to walk but also practice RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS. Let all of us consider doing this. So lace up your sneakers and get moving.
