1 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 ISSUE 13 From the Rector... Dear parishioners, Thanks to the generosity of you all, we have managed to make progress on putting our parish finances on an even keel without having to cut programmes such as our youth work and other outreach programmes. In the present economic circumstances, this has been no easy task and I am aware that many of you have made sacrifices to keep up your giving. For many years, our Christmas Market has been essential to our funding and it still is. But it is not just a time for raising money: it has a social dimension and enables us to make contact with the wider community. This year, may I ask all parishioners to get friends and neighbours along for the bargains, for tea/coffee and chat, and to help us raise the funds needed to balance the parochial books while they are enjoying themselves! Also, to tap whatever sources are available to you for all the things we need on the stalls: home baking and jam making, cold meats, bottles for the bottle stall, gifts and books and toys, and yourselves. Then let us relax and turn our thoughts towards what Christmas is really all about: not money but love: love shown to us by God in the gift of Jesus, reminding us that we are to be channels of that love to others. Our gifts are given not to get something back but to reflect the divine love so generously poured into our lives. It s something to celebrate with joy and happiness so let s get on and do it! Above all, on Christmas Day let the world see that Jesus is God s bursting into human life. The message is for everyone, not just the holy but for all who are made in the image of God. Yours in Christ Norman Christmas Market Saturday 24th November :00 am to 2:30 pm St. Andrew's Parish Centre The Christmas Market is one of our main Parish fund-raising events. 2 Parish Registers Holy Baptism 16th September, in St Doulagh s Alex Albert, son of Shane and Joanne O Donnell, 204 Dewfall Drive, Bradley Stoke, Bristol. 16th September, in St Andrew s, Conor David, son of Gordon & Jane Hudson, 18 Gainsborough Downs, Malahide, Holy Matrimony 26th August, in St Andrew s, Louisa Mary Patricia Johnston and Matthew Paul Balasingam, both of 24 Oak Hall, Malahide. Christian Burial 4th October 2012, in St Andrew s Churchyard, after service in church, George Charles Ray, Brabazon House, Sandymount. Congratulations to Roger Warburton and Adrienne Collins, who were married in St Mary s Church, Howth on 24th August last and to Stephen Worrell and Cliona Fenix who were married recently in Seabury Church. We wish both couples well in their new homes. Sympathy We offer our sympathy to David Coffey, Seabury, on the recent death of his father, and to Bruce Edwards, The Warren, whose father died recently in Anglesey. Church Service changes Following the experimental Family Services organised over the last couple of years, we will revert to the former pattern of services for our evening worship, Holy Communion on the 2nd and 4th Sundays and other forms of worship on the 1st and 5th Sundays. All of these will now be on an All-Age basis for those of all ages from 4 to 100! The time will remain unaltered at 6.30 pm. This may suit a number of families who are involved with various sporting and other activities on many Sunday mornings. Harvest Services Both churches were beautifully decorated; thanks are due to Norma Sherwood (St Andrew s) and Amanda Park (St Doulagh s) and their helpers. Congregations were well up on last year. We thank our visiting preachers, Rev Anne Taylor, Rev Andrea Wills and Rev Fr Frank Reburn for their stimulating and challenging addresses. The Pot-Luck lunch after the service in St Andrew s was a great social success, as well as getting the message across of our need to share the many blessings God has given us. Thanks to the team who put so much hard work into this. Diocesan Growth Forum This was held in High School on Saturday 6th October. The main speaker was Canon George Lings of the Church Army, and we also heard of new developments of Church in Rathmines, Co. Wicklow, Castlereagh Co. Down and Warrington from those centrally involved. Discussion groups which followed were lively and stimulating and helped those who were there to widen their perception of what it means to be Church amid the challenges of contemporary society. Cars parked inside during the week belong to parish and school staff who are aware of the danger, who have permission to be there and must not be obstructed in any way. Diocesan Synod This was held in Taney Parish Centre on 16th and 17th October. The Synod discusses and approves the Report of the Diocesan Councils, as well as the Board of Education, the Board of Mission, the Ministry of Healing and the Board of Social Action, giving an opportunity for members to express their views and opinions on the various topics brought before them. The Education debate was perhaps the liveliest in view of the present condition of the education system which is forcing many changes, not all welcome, upon our schools. The report on the Diocesan Committee for Social Action highlighted the refocusing of the activities of the committee in the past year to respond to the current recession and its effects on our members and the wider society. Twin Oak Tree Care Ltd. Tree Surgeons Remembrance Sunday The Links, Portmarnock, Co. Dublin. twinoaktreecare@hotmail.com It is over 90 years since the end of the Great War which despite its horrors, failed to end all war. There has been a revitalisation of Remembrance Sunday and a new realisation, that had either war been lost, life today would be far less pleasant than it is today. There will be special acts of remembrance at the and services on Sunday 11th November, remembering that at am on 11/11, the guns fell silent over a shattered Europe and praying that we may be able to banish the horrors of war from our life. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Earl Haig Fund which today helps those scarred by war in their own lives and that of their families. ¾ Tree Surgery Tree Felling ¾ Site clearance Stump Removal ¾ Tree Surveys Timber & Green waste recycling All tree work Free Quotation given St Doulagh s Day Phone John This year, it falls on a Saturday, so rather than the usual Festival Service, the readings for St Doulagh the Hermit will be used at the am service in St Doulagh s which will be a celebration of Holy Communion. All friends of St Doulagh s are warmly welcomed. Advent Carols The Annual Advent Carol Service will be held on Sunday 4th December at 7.00 pm. This is a service of readings and music reminding us of the joint Advent themes of the coming of Christ as saviour and his coming again as judge. Christmas Services The Children s Carol & Gift service, which will be held on 9th December at am, provides an opportunity to give gifts to children who might otherwise have to go without a present at Christmas. We ask the children to bring a wrapped gift of a toy, attaching a removable sticker indicating the age for which it is suitable and whether for a boy or a girl. The Festival Service of Nine Lessons, and Carols will be held on 16th December at 7.00 pm and will be followed by seasonal refreshments in the Parish Centre. This is a wonderful Continued on page 4 3
