3 Reeson s Ramblings Parish Mission Our Parish Mission with Fr. Tom Donaldson C.Ss. R. was held October 15-17, and was a huge success, receiving rave reviews by those who attended! If you missed it, you are not too late to be blessed by his message Fr. Tom s talks and Sunday homily are now available on the parish website. Directions for how to access them are at the bottom of this page. Kerygma, baby! Fr. Tom s message was clear as Catholics, we are to proclaim the Gospel message so that all may know and seek Jesus with their whole hearts! He challenged us to set aside our doubts about whether we are worthy or unworthy of God s love, knowing God loves us completely, at all times. He gave us the opportunity to reaffirm our belief and faith in a public way. He brought a smile to our faces and tears to many eyes with his touching stories. He is certainly loved by God and has helped all of us to remember that we are, too! My main kudos, however, go to Nicole Cook, our Coordinator of Discipleship Formation. She took care of all the details to arrange for our yearly Parish Mission. It was Nicole who orchestrated an army of parishioners to welcome and serve our St. Columbkille community throughout the week. Many thanks to those who helped in a myriad of ways: Andrea Powers and Angela Strabala, along with members and parents of the American Heritage Girls, provided childcare for the littlest among us. And, catechists Sandy Watson, Megan Reeder, Rachel Bramblett, John Bramblett, and Laura Harlan taught and cared for our elementary students. Throughout the week, our prayer was made better by those who welcomed us into the space and helped to lead the evenings: Rich Alcala, Kristin Armendariz, David Batter, Becca Cargill, Chuck Caskey, Julie Crnkovich, Pat Dempsey, Jim Dennis, Jeff Esparrago, Jordan Farmer, Emily George, Deacon Dave Graef, Ruth Ann Graef, Linda Gries, Michelle Grzywa, Grace Horacek, Jake Horacek, Bridget Huggins, Phil LaSala, Jessica LeBlanc, Melissa Nelson, Debbie Rowe, Tess Sousek, James Strabala, Deacon Eric Vande Berg, and Jenni Whitaker. Led by Barb Mueller, Wendy Squarcia, Carrie George, and Dee Iske, the School Advisory Council, Women s Guild, and members of the RCIA community hosted receptions, giving us an opportunity to break bread as a community and talk with Fr. Tom. On Wednesday evening, following the Mission, the Moms of Faith led a beautiful Illuminated Rosary for the Month of the Holy Rosary. It was a delight to see so many families dads, moms, and kiddos praying with our Blessed Mother! Thank you to all those who helped to bring together so many in our parish for this beautiful prayer, especially Kim Miller and Melissa Nelson who organized the evening and reception. If you were not able to attend, you can access Fr. Tom s talks by going to and clicking on the Parish Mission button. Through his Mission work, Fr. Tom raises funds to support the Redemptorist Community. If you would like to help support his ministry and Religious Community, you may place your contribution in an envelope marked Parish Mission in the collection basket on Sunday. Pax, Fr. Dave Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29,

6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE RE Classes No Class: Monday, Oct 30th Class: Wednesday, Nov 1st SVDP COAT GIVEAWAY The St. Vincent de Paul Society is holding its 13th Annual Winter Coat Giveaway on Saturday, November 4 from 9am-1pm. The event will be held at a new location this year, St. Peter Church Gym on 28th and Leavenworth Street. We are currently collecting new or gently used men s, women s, and children s coats, gloves, hat, scarves, and boots. Items can be dropped off at any one of the four St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store locations. Volunteers are needed to sort items before the sale on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Nov. 1-3). On the day of the event, volunteer shifts are 9-11am and 11am -1pm. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed. If you would like to help, contact Gail at or svdpgail@live.net. Monetary donations can be made by sending a check (write COATS in the memo line) to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 2010 Leavenworth, Omaha NE Attn:Gail. Thank you for helping us help others. CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN & MAKE IT GREEN! Are you gearing up for ghouls and goblins? You can be spooky AND sustainable! Green Your Costume. Did you know that many costumes sold in stores contain toxic chemicals like PVC and phthalates? Yuck! Instead, get creative by going handmade and upcycled. Host a pre-halloween costume swap in your community, repurpose existing clothes, or fashion costumes from recycled materials. Hand Out Healthy Treats. Instead of buying sugary candy, consider giving small boxes of raisins, mandarin oranges, trail mix, crayons, stickers, organic granola bars, or Rainforest Alliance Certified chocolate. Use Natural Decorations. Decorating with locallygrown gourds and pumpkins are a great way to reduce waste and carbon emissions. Use recycled paper to make window decorations like spooky Halloween trees. Throw a Low or No-Waste Party. Instead of buying plastic plates, cups and utensils for your next party, use silverware or compostable utensils. Visit your neighborhood thrift store and purchase mismatched cloth napkins and have guests toss them in a bin for washing and reusing at your next party. Recycle bottles and cans, and compost leftovers. Compost Leftovers. Once Halloween is over, recycle your pumpkins, leaves, straw and any other organic material by composting it. Pumpkins also make great food for wildlife. Head to the Farm. Enjoying fresh produce, hay rides and corn mazes at your local farm is a great way to celebrate Halloween! Credit: "BE NOT AFRAID" RESPECT LIFE MONTH October is Respect Life Month. The theme "Be Not Afraid" was chosen by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. It illustrates how we need to always trust in God and not be fearful. Married couples put fear aside and trust in God when learning and using Natural Family Planning (NFP). They open their hearts to the beautiful plans God has for their marriage and family. If you have any questions or would like information about NFP, please contact St. Columbkille NFP liaisons Mike and Lisa Brandon at ilovecocacola22@hotmail.com or St. Columbkille Parish

12 TAKE SLAVERY OUT OF SHOPPING The relationship between our everyday purchases and modern day slavery seems improbable, but the connection is very real. It just remains hidden from public view. In poor regions of the world, impoverished families are targeted by traffickers with promises of a better life for their children. Unsuspecting parents give up sons and daughters who end up in forced and abusive work situations on farms, factories and brothels. A look inside the chocolate industry illustrates the problem. Cocoa beans, from which chocolate is manufactured, are encased in heavy pods that hang from trees. Their harvest is back-breaking work for adults; brutal for children. Yet 284,000 children, 64% of whom are under 14 years, work in forced and abusive conditions on cocoa farms in West Africa. An investigative report details 13 hour work days on the plantation filled with harsh physical labor, punctuated by beatings, and ending with a night of fitful sleep on a wooden plank in a locked room filled with other slaves. Most of the 15 billion dollars of chocolate that we consume in the United States each year is tainted with this forced and abusive child labor. Parallel stories of both child & adult exploitation are found in the supply chains of coffee, tea, sugar, bananas, jewelry, clothing, & the list goes on. But it doesn t have to be this way. Fair Trade, the business model that monitors and assures that small producers are treated with dignity, is changing the lives and futures of millions of small farmers, producers and their children. Fair Trade confronts poverty and trafficking in three ways. Prevention. Assuring decent wages for parents, along with funds set aside for community development (schools, clinics, and the like), Fair Trade stands as a powerful antidote to the lure of a better life elsewhere that is held out by traffickers. Enforcement. Fair Trade certification is sought by businesses wanting to maintain market share. This certification is given for a product only if a business cleans up its act and enforces policies that eliminate forced or abusive labor in the supply chain. Rehabilitation. Fair Trade Cooperatives provide safe haven and dignified work to victims rescued from brothels and other situations of exploitation. Thanks to informed consumers, Fair Trade is the fastest growing segment of the retail economy. We have the ability to break the chains - simply by relentlessly pursuing Fair Trade at every opportunity. Make this Christmas a Fair Trade Christmas. Give Gifts that Give Twice.
