3 FR. PAT S PONDERINGS: ORGAN DONATION The Catholic Church supports and encourages the donation of organs. The Catechism states, Organ donation after death is a noble and meritorious act and is to be encouraged as an expression of solidarity. (CCC 2296) Donation of organs is means to support and love one s neighbor and to help those in need. Organ donation can be a means to follow the commandment given by Jesus, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Mt 22:39) Pope Francis has indicated that the act of organ donation is a testimony of love for our neighbor. Catholic health care institutions should encourage and provide the means whereby those who wish to do so may arrange for the donation of their organs and bodily tissue, for ethically legitimate purposes, so that they may be used for donation and research after death. (ERD 63) Organ transplants from living donors can also be done, such as donating a kidney to a family member. The Catechism states, Organ transplants are in conformity with the moral law if the physical and psychological dangers and risks to the donor are proportionate to the good that is sought for the recipient. Importantly, the principle is that the organ donation will not sacrifice or seriously impair any essential bodily function [of the donor] and the anticipated benefit to the recipient is proportionate to the harm done to the donor. (ERD 30) The integrity and wholeness of the donor is to be safeguarded. The freedom of the donor is to be respected, as the Catechism states, It is not morally acceptable if the donor or his proxy has not given explicit consent. (CCC 2296) death of the donor. Pressure can exist to determine death as soon as possible so as to increase the chances of a successful organ donation. Ethical conduct and protocol provides that the person has died before transplantation. Such organs should not be removed until it has been medically determined that the patient has died. In order to prevent any conflict of interest, the physician who determines death should not be a member of the transplant team. (ERD 64) Thus, the importance of separation of medical decision making between the donor and the prospective donee. The determination of death should be made by the physician or competent medical authority in accordance with responsible and commonly accepted scientific criteria. (ERD 62) Moreover, it is not morally admissible directly to bring about the disabling mutilation or death of a human being, even in order to delay the death of other persons. (CCC 2296) Organ donation is a blessing to mankind, but along with this advance includes an awareness of important issues, such as determining when death has occurred for a person. CCC = Catechism of the Catholic Church ERD = USCCB: Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (2009) Donation of organs to be done at death can create tension between the desire and good of donating organs with having and determining certainty of Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22,

Many people offer Mass on All Souls Day for the deceased, but you can have Masses offered throughout the entire year! If you would like to submit a Mass intention, please call the parish office at (402) We try to offer all Masses at St. Columbkille, but occasionally send intentions to other parishes, as well, when they ask for intentions. In 2 Maccabees 12: 44-46, we are taught that it is good to pray for the dead when a man named Judas prays for fallen members of his army. WHY PRAY AT THE ABORTION CLINIC? Are you pro-life but prefer not to pray at the abortion mill? I was there once, but now pray there several times a year. Things have changed over the years. Today it is a message of love for the baby and the mother. The mother would rather not be in this situation but sees no way out. It is through our prayers that a door opens to alternatives they are not aware of. You do not have to worry about approaching the expectant mothers, as they have trained people to assist there. What we do need are people willing to pray for the mothers and babies. So maybe you would like to try this out with a bit more privacy? There is a sign up for 40 days for Life where our parish has taken a full 24 hours. Feel free to sign up and you can even join an hour with someone that has done this before, or you can select an hour day or night and try what works for you. I still encourage you to give it a try you might save a life. Thank you and God bless. -Kent Riesberg If you would like to join the prayer warriors at the abortion clinic, contact Anne Price at (402) Parish Calendar Legend: Ch. Church S.H. Social Hall S.C. Here are a few ideas for bringing your garden to life in the fall without polluting or wasting materials. Choose hand-powered or electric tools over gas. One gas-powered leaf blower can emit as much pollution as 80 cars! Instead of leaf blowers, use rakes; use hand-powered garden trimmers, and a push mower if your yard allows it. If you must use motorized tools, go for electric over gas-powered. Plant trees. By the time autumn rolls around, summer heat waves are long past, rainfall is usually more plentiful, and new trees, bushes and flowers have a greater chance of surviving than they would if they were planted during a hotter season. Choose species native to your area as well as those that are drought and pest resistant and can grow in the kind of soil and amount of sunlight available on your property. Fertilize organically. When preparing your soil for next year, add organic, slow -release fertilizers that will help enhance your soil over time. These fertilizers are made of natural materials, and contain vital nutrients to help your plants grow. Most garden stores today carry a wide variety of organic fertilizers; many catalog companies also sell organic products, or you can use the compost you processed yourself... Compost your leaves. Falling leaves are beautiful and valuable. Instead of bagging leaves and leaving them out with the trash, collect and compost them to create nutrient-rich, organic soil that will be ready for use by the spring. Can and store summer's bounty. Canning is a time-honored way to ensure that your garden keeps giving all year round. Imagine eating soups, jellies, herbs, and salsas from your own garden all winter long! 12 October National Domestic Violence Awareness Month What Is Domestic Violence? Insults, name calling or bossing around Using any mistake a victim makes to humiliate him/her Belittling the victim to make him/her feel powerless, stupid, and/or worthless Telling the victim how to think, dress, or act to help you improve yourself Forcing the victim to limit contact with family or friends Ignoring, withholding affection, or breaking promises Pushing, shoving, hitting, biting, choking Things a Victim Can Do Remember, you are not responsible for the abuse. You can t make someone hurt you. That person chooses to do it. It is not your fault. Find someone you can talk to a friend, teacher, parent, or a domestic abuse program. When you feel a fight coming on, try to move to a place that is the lowest risk for getting hurt. Create a code word for family or friends so they know when to call for help. Remember, although you may still care for your partner, the reality is that sometimes you partner is dangerous. Trust your instincts. If you believe the situation is escalating, do what is necessary to keep yourself as safe as possible at that moment. What Can a Family or Friend Do To Help? Express your concerns. Support your friend s strengths. Help build self-confidence. Reach out to a concerned adult or a domestic abuse program for help. Work on a safety plan. Be there. Listen. And stay connected. If you are frightened or frustrated, get support for yourself. Remember, you can t rescue or solve your friend s problems, but you can offer support.
