Dickerson, Office Assistant Vacant Co-chair Parish Council Inside this issue: Pastoral Message Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord Today we hear the familiar story of three wise men, (or perhaps astrologers), following a star. Like a modern day GPS device, the star directed their footsteps. Unlike a modern day GPS device, the three men simply could not put in a final destination address. They entered the name of a person as the item needed to get directions. They were looking for the newborn king of the Jews. The star leads them to Jesus who is still in Bethlehem. Last week we noted that the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the Beatitudes, describe for us the paths that lead to the kingdom of heaven CCC Our guide is not a star but Jesus himself. The Gospel of John records Jesus as saying, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (Jn. 14:6) So, Jesus is the way. He is not a paid guide leading us through a tour of the Amazon Jungle. He is not an expert on how to climb to the top of a famous mountain. Jesus is the way. The kingdom of heaven is truth and life. Jesus is truth and life. Therefore, Jesus is the kingdom of heaven. Our steps are being directed toward the sacraments. Why? Our steps are being directed toward the sacraments because the sacraments unite us to Jesus, unite us to the way, unite us to truth and life. Using our comparisons, we can conclude that the Beatitudes, describe for us the paths that lead to the kingdom of heaven, that lead to the sacraments. A Father Pinckaers, Order of Preachers, has written a book entitled, The Sources of Christian Ethics. He quotes St. Thomas Aquinas as saying, the Lord s Sermon on the Mount contains all teaching on the Christian life, (see Part One, Chapter 7, IV). The Sermon on the Mount begins with the Beatitudes. Father Pinckaers again quotes St. Thomas: Having stated the end is happiness, the Beatitudes were seen as Christ s answer to the question of happiness and our final end. So, the Beatitudes do a lot more than simply direct our steps. The Catechism of the Catholic Church correctly teaches, The Beatitudes depict the countenance of Jesus Christ CCC Father Pinckaers continues his study by noting that through the Beatitudes we can see how Christ considered all the naturally inspired answers to the question of human happiness. Then by Christ teaching us the Beatitudes, we discover the need for detachment from these goods, (natural inclinations to happiness). Thus the Beatitudes are, the primary source for our ultimate end, happiness. How can we as Catholics ignore so important a goal as happiness and how can we ignore the wisdom of God in Jesus? For Jesus is the teacher that is the way to that goal of happiness! We must study these Beatitudes in detail. 5 ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND CATHOLIC CHURCH PAGE 5 Sunday Missal Readings History of New Year s Resolutions A New Year s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, such as opening doors for people beginning from New Year s Day. Religious Origins - Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whim the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knight took the peacock vow at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to Chivalry. At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions. There are other religious parallels to this tradition. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one s wrongdoings over the year and both seek forgiveness, People may act similarly during the Christian liturgical season of Lent, thought he motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility, in fact the practice of New Year s resolutions partially came from the Lenten sacrifices. The concept of creed, is to reflect upon self improvement annually. At the end of the Great Depression about a quarter of American adults formed New Year s resolutions, At the start of the 21st century, about 40% did, January 10, 2016 Collect, Readings, Prayer over the Offerings and Prayer after Communion: Pg Nicene Creed: Pg Preface: I of the Nativity of the Lord Pg. 83 Eucharist Prayer No. 2: Pg Solemn Blessing :Pg. 103 Prayer before and after Communion: Pg Toastmasters Youth Leadership Graduation Banquet The participants of the Toastmasters Fall Youth Leadership Program will have their Graduation Banquet Ceremony on Saturday January 9, 2016 from 1:00p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Omega Room. Please plan to attend. Thank You from Environmental Committee On behalf of the Spiritual Life and Worship Committee, thank you for taking time from your every day lives and hectic holiday schedules to help with our Christmas decorations. I applaud your can-do attitude and for stepping up to help with little advance notice. Our worship space is simply beautiful. Thank you all for a job well done. Pat Slye, Environmental Committee Chair. The most common reason for participants failing their New Year s Resolution was setting themselves unrealistic goals (35%), while 33% didn t keep track of their progress and a further 23% forgot about it. About one in ten respondents claimed they made too many resolutions. A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of these who set New Year resolutions fail despite the fact that 53% of the study s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goals 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as a pound a week, instead of saying lose weight ), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.
