Veterans Day is November 11 th St. Rose of Lima will honor our brave Veteran s and Active Duty Military at a special Mass on Sunday, November 12 th at 9:00 a.m. Our own Fr. Jim Maher (a Navy veteran) will be the celebrant who will be presenting a gift to all active duty and retired military members. A light reception will follow in the rectory backyard. The St. Rose community extends their heartfelt thanks to Veterans, as well as those who currently serve our nation in the military. We hope that you will join us in the celebration of the Mass, as we thank you for your service to our great nation. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week we have in All Souls' Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday's grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The "Day of the Dead" is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life's sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. 8 RESPECT LIFE The Knights of Columbus sponsors a Pro Life Rosary for the intention of bringing the evil of abortion to an end. We meet the first Saturday of each month. Chairs will be provided, or you may bring your own. Baby Bottle Campaign St. Rose of Lima Respect Life Ministry is distributing Baby Bottles which can be found in the bassinet by the altar. Please fill them with your change/dollar bills and bring them back to the baskets located by the Altar or the rectory. The money will go to the Ventura Life Centers to support women with their medical needs such as ultrasound, free pregnancy test, etc. plus newborn supplies. Thank you for your support. Serving Those in Need The holidays are upon us. Currently, we are serving approx families each week. We are in need of mashed potatoes and gravy, stuf ing and cranberry sauce.
