3 Lifeboat Restoration Group Bev Kay ration.org ononsealifeboatrestorati ongroup We re beginning to make some progress with the charity application following a very kind offer of help and also have now nearly finished preparing the new site at The Old Rectory gardens to get the Edward Birkbeck moved in as soon as possible so hopefully restoration work can get underway again once the weather warms up a bit! If you re interested in getting involved please get in touch. Editorial Nomination papers will soon be available for the forthcoming Parish Council elections, taking place on Thursday 5th May in the Village Hall. If you're interested in becoming a councillor, see the back page of the Newsletter and keep an eye on the noticeboard outside the Post Office. The Chair or myself as Clerk, can discuss what s involved and there is free training available to help and support you in your role. You will be doing your community a service and helping to give them a voice through the local democratic process. Councillor Emma Punchard gave the council good news about the Playground being entered into the Tesco funding vote at local stores and the Tourism Improvement Bid - see details in box and on Letters Page. Easter comes early this year, so I wish you all a Happy Easter and hope the Easter Bunny leaves you with an egg or two! Sarah. Keith Jones Painter and Decorator (City and Guilds Inst.qualified ) Property and Garden Maintenance 19 Hillview Drive Winterton on sea Situation Vacant (voluntary): Fabric Officer Our PCC (church management committee) find ourselves needing a Fabric Officer. This is the rather grand title for someone who would be able to take a lead, on the PCC s behalf, in working with our architect, applying for planning permission for projects if necessary, generally keeping an eye on the state of the building and reporting back to PCC meetings. It s a job that was done very well for several years by Catherine Jordan but a few months ago she felt it was time to hand over to someone else; and so far no-one has volunteered. If you think this might be interesting for you, and you d like to learn more, then please speak to Phyllis or Sandra as soon as convenient; or call Selwyn on

5 Your Letters Information about Gary Bendelow I was wondering if you could help me locate Gary. My dad Kenneth Wood age 88 years old from Rochester Kent and Gary have been friends since their school days and in the last few years have only kept in contact by Xmas cards. Last year they did not hear from Gary and are worried that his health may have declined. My dad would love to hear from Gary. [Editor: if you have any information please Linda.] Linda lee leelindauk@yahoo.co.uk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ George Family Tree Dear People of Winterton on Sea, I am researching my GEORGE family tree, my great great grandfather was James John George born the 19th October 1841 at Winterton. He married Hannah Wales Goose of Ludham in 1866 at Great Yarmouth. He had ten brothers and sisters but died at sea in 1876 on a vessel named WAVE. If I give more family information, could you please put me in touch with someone who could tell me if there are any of this family's descendants still in the village. The o in front of the 2 in my address is a letter o, not a zero. Many thanks, Les George of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, formerly from Hull. les-george@o2.co.uk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank You A big Thank You to everyone who has sent cards, thoughts and prayers, and been so kind to me since my wonderful Mum Elsie sadly passed away on 26th January 2016, age 96. All donations received are going to Winterton Church. Elaine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Footpath at Mill Farm A new permissive path has been opened running along the west side of Hemsby road, between the S bend and the village. Although, it does not connect all the way up to Bulmer Lane, villagers and walkers can cross onto the new footpath and avoid crossing the road on the bend at Mill Farm and then continue on the circular walk around the village. Please be aware that there is a bank to go up and down and it can be slippy at times. There are free range chickens at Mill Farm so dogs must be kept on the lead whilst on the path and at Mill Farm. We would also appreciate it if you put all dog mess in the shiny new red dog poo bin provided. Thanks to Norfolk Trails for completing the fencing work and we hope that you can all enjoy the safer walk around the village. Success for Winterton's Tourism Improvement Bid A group of Tourist Businesses have successfully applied to the Great Yarmouth's Tourism Business Improvement Area for some money to support Winterton in Bloom, the provision of some new bins and a walking map and information for walks around Winterton. 6 Message from Father Selwyn Tillett People sometimes ask me why I m a priest. It isn t meant as a criticism! people are genuinely interested to know. What makes someone decide this is a path they have to follow? My usual answer is that I actually enjoy it, I ve not often had doubts that I made the right decision, but in the beginning I didn t want to be. For several years I fought against the feeling that this was what I was being called to do, but eventually I gave in and decided that I had to offer myself for ordination. My vocation was tested and accepted, and here we are. I didn t want to be God had other ideas. The thing that ultimately convinced me I had to go in this direction was my experience of Lent in my final year at college. Those six weeks of preparation for Easter are a time when traditionally people look at themselves and their lives, particularly their relationship with God, and try to correct anything that has gone askew. I decided I d spend that time wrestling with this question and that hopefully by Easter I would know he would have helped me understand where I should be going. It didn t actually take quite as long as Easter. I knelt in church in front of the cross on Good Friday afternoon, and the decision was made. What finally got me there was the celebration of what we call Holy Week that final week before Easter when every day in church we follow Jesus step by step, minute by minute, through his last days before his death and beyond. It wasn t just real and vivid there was an unmistakable sense that the events of that week were central to what I believed, and I was being called to try to put the reality of God s love, shown that week, into words and actions in people s lives. Not surprisingly Holy Week has always been a special and important time for me personally, as well as being at the heart of everything we all say and do in church all the rest of the year. Elsewhere you ll find details of the main events of that week as we celebrate them in our churches. The procession into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday Jesus s last supper with his friends on Maundy Thursday night, and his arrest and trial afterwards his death on Good Friday and the unlooked-for miracle of his resurrection at Easter. There are special services to mark all of these, some of them at unusual times when we try to follow exactly where he and his disciples were. Sharing in this extraordinary week can be a very powerful experience. Even if this might be the first time you ve tried don t be afraid to come and join others seeing the cost of the reality of his love. And who knows maybe you d discover a new direction he wants you to follow...
