There I encountered again sorro that is Syria. In high definition photographs, I looked at ancient city of Aleppo, completely destroyed. Mile upon mile of modern and ancient buildings, and not one of m complete; all of m crumbled and crushed beneath years of bombardment and savage ar. Listening to a reporter testify before United Nations, I heard about hell of those ho remain in city: more than a million people ho live in dull and constant terror, as bombs fall indiscriminately on omen and children, on fighters and on those already ounded. And beyond constant, random bombing, hich has left city caked in a gray dust as fine as if a thousand tin-toers had collapsed, re are snipers, ho shoot anyone that moves ithin ir sights. Yet, still people stay or are forced to stay picking through rubble to find something by hich y might sustain ir lives, something y might use to feed ir children. But no, unsatisfied ith bombs and bullets, Syrian government hich has kept out food and medicine, cooking oil and fuel threatens to cut off ater, and leave nearly to million people trapped and abandoned in a city of death and despair. Having looked at photographs and read various stories, I stood up, heartsick, and headed home. It as about 10 pm, and filled ith thoughts of children of Aleppo, I started to alk around block, turning back to take a look at toer and church. Standing re, in perfectly cooled air of a Seattle summer evening, looking souast from corner of 18th and Aloha, I sa moon, almost full, move past steeple of St. oseph Church. I have alays loved moon: ay it seems so large on its ascent, ay shado of earth cuts across it quartering it, halv-

3 ing it, salloing it in darkness, or alloing it to shine ith all beauty of reflected sun. I dream sometimes of going re, clad in small environment of a space suit and driving moon rover left behind by earlier explorers. I dream of passing through her craters 35 of hich are named for esuits and looking back at great blue ball, hich has been, until that moment, my only home. Perhaps se dreams persist because I am a child of space age, ho remembers atching Gemini missions at school, on an old black and hite television my teacher ould bring in. Or perhaps y persist because y remind me of a time hen grandeur of our dreams seemed larger than brilliance of our technology. A time e could imagine communities of scientists and politicians, soldiers and engineers using ir ingenuity for exploration rar than exploitation. A time e still thought of surveying heaven, not surveilling our neighbors; hen science seemed to offer promise of a better orld, not just advantage of better eapons. A time hen omen and men still dreamt of making moon blossom like earth, rar than dreading a future here earth ould be as dead as is moon. Standing in cool night air, looking at beauty of moon shining on steeple s cross, I felt old dreams rising in me, anting to push back against cynicism and resignation of current age, yet ondering if Aleppo is not too much for us, ondering if perhaps Auden is right: e are adroiter ith objects than lives and more facile ith courage than kindness. today. Like gods, e have thought e could bend orld to our ill, and no barbarous among us rise against our beauteous isdom, to turn our planet of life into a place of death and sorro. Yet, even if Auden is correct, even if arnings of Ezekiel seem to be coming to pass in astes of Aleppo, e are not yet overcome. And as I stood re that night, looking back at steeple of St. oseph its cross framed by lovely but lifeless moon I kne that love ill often seem eaker than hate, but ill never be overcome by it. For on cross of esus, God ho orders sun and moon, orbits of heavens and shaping of stars chose irrevocably to share our lot, and ill not let us go. Thus, e must do hat e can: setting aside hubris for humility, rejecting great plans of our self-made utopias for simpler and harder ork of sainthood, in hich e build reign of God through small and constant orks e are called to do. That may mean standing in streets, speaking out for Aleppo, or standing in a food line, serving homeless; it may mean joining esuit Refugee Service to resettle migrants, or visiting Tent City to comfort those ho have been forced to ander; it may mean lifting a child from rubble or teaching a child to love all people. Each is a part of hole, and gravest sin is to do nothing. At that moment, ords of prophet Ezekiel, read that morning at Mass, came to me n: Because you are haughty of heart, you say A god am I! / I occupy a godly throne in heart of sea! / And yet you are a man, and not a god, hoever you may think yourself a god... Therefore, I ill bring against you foreigners, most barbarous of nations. / They shall dra ir sords against your beauteous isdom, y shall run m through your splendid apparel. The difference beteen craters of Aleppo and those on moon is that cause of Aleppo is not failure of planet to provide an atmosphere, nor natural actions of meteor impacts; rar, it is human sin and pride that have caused Aleppo s suffering. It is men and omen of our species ho have made this place of ancient beauty into a place here children, looking like suitless astronauts, pick amid rubble for stones and food, or are pulled from remnants of ir destroyed home and placed, blank-eyed and frozen, into back of ambulances. It is through hubris of people like us, or people acting in our name that this city, once mentioned in Shakespeare as a place of beauty and culture, has become a asteland through actions or inactions, through choices made long ago and choices being made Autumn Mass Time Change Starting Sunday, Sept 11 We ill return to our regular schedule as follos: Saturday evening at 5 pm, Sunday at 9:00 & 11:00 am, and 5:30 pm.
