Thus, though I had hoped to spend only one eek per chapter, here is end Chapter Three. -John Whitney, SJ-) A perfect idea marriage, so ten promoted in teaching Church, means little indeed, can even be destructive unless it helps a person live challenges graces a real marriage. The real is greater than idea, as Pope Francis is so fond saying. In much Chapter Three Amoris Laetitia, Francis affirms this realistic, pastoral vision marriage, one grounded not in ideas but in experience, i.e., in kerygma Jesus Christ, ho comes to live among us not as a concept, but as a bror familiar ith our frailties our desires. Christian marriage is not an abonment natural order, nor some sort necessary evil to be accepted if one cannot live higher calling celibate chastity. On contrary, mutual consent loving self-gift marriage including mutual gift sexual pleasure tenderness is one great expressions God s on life, a life hich, like marriage, is source community family. This gift self physical, emotional, personal, etc. allos husbs ives to attain a deeper freedom helps m to act for one anor as a path to greater friendship ith God. It is unitive dimension all true marriage, hich, hile connected to procreative dimension, is distinguishable from it. And though Francis affirms that this unitive dimension reaches its fullness in communion ith Christ, he also notes that every such union fers positive elements, hich Christians should affirm support: In addition to true natural marriage, positive elements exist in forms marriage found in or religious traditions, even if, at times, obscurely. We can readily say that anyone ho ants to bring into this orld a family hich teaches children to be excited by every gesture aimed at overcoming evil a family hich shos that Spirit is alive at ork ill encounter our gratitude our appreciation. Whatever people, religion, or region to hich y belong ( 77) By recognizing positive elements in all forms marriage, Amoris Laetitia allos us to affirm virtues, as ell, in so-called irregular unions i.e., unions not recognized in Catholic Church: Seeing things ith eyes Christ inspires Church s pastoral care for faithful ho are living toger, or are only married civilly, or are divorced remarried ( 78). In this passage, Francis not only calls ministers Church to avoid udgements that do not take into account complexity various situations ( 79), he goes furr, suggesting that, even hen a particular union cannot be sanctioned by Church, it may still shine ith light Christ, as indicated by couple s deep affection, responsibility toards children, ability to overcome trials ( 78). Life is not alays ideal, Francis notes, but Christ enters it neverless;

3 in all those imperfect marriages hich still manifest goal true marriage i.e., flourishing couple raising children Church Christ should be present ith love mercy, as ell. Throughout much history Church, marriage as defined simply by its procreative end. Though Vatican II broadened this definition by its declaration that, spouses to hom God has not granted children can have a conugal life full meaning, in both human Christian terms (Gaudium et Spes, 48), sexual union a married couple remains connected to reproduction by its very nature. Supporting marriage s told identity, Francis ill argue later in Amoris Laetitia against patriarchal structures that so ten reduce omen to mere breeding stock, at service a reproductive imperative. At same time, in Chapter Three, he affirms connection beteen marital love openness to life: [The child] does not appear at end process, but is present from beginning love as an essential feature, one that cannot be denied ithout disfiguring that love itself. From outset, love refuses every impulse to close in on itself; it is open to a fruitfulness that dras it beyond itself ( 80). While it may seem, at first, that Amoris Laetitia is merely repeating teachings Paul VI in Humanae Vitae, I think it is important to note ho differently Francis develops this position. Rar than emphasizing dem for every act conugal love to be open to life free artificial barriers, Francis first emphasizes loving relationship from hich life should spring, inherent dignity all such life: A child deserves to be born that love, not by or means, for he or she is not something oed to one, but is a gift, hich is fruit specific act conugal love parents ( 81). In much same ay he speaks against patriarchy or forms domination, Francis reects consumer model child-bearing, in hich e reduce generation human life to one variable an individual s or a couple s plan ( 82). A child is not an accessory to hich one has a right nor a nuisance hich one can casually dispose. Because she has, from beginning, her on identity being, a child must not be reduced to a manufactured product, but should be revered as a sign God s presence a reverence that should be held, as ell, in cases adoption or foster parenting, hich is affirmed ith particular poignancy by those ho lovingly care for children ith disabilities ( 65). Thus, her parents receive ir children through natural birth or through generous choice adoption, y receive m as intrinsically valuable free beings, hose care y are entrusted ith, but hose life y do not on. harsh simplistic condemnations that have become so much a part an ten polarized Church. This is more than a difference in style. For example, in speaking Humanae Vitae, Francis avoids talking about prohibitions moral absolutes hen it comes to birth control, emphasizing instead as he has throughout Amoris Laetitia importance mature conscience. The teaching Church, responsibility pastors, is not to regulate couples bedrooms, but to help m respect dignity person in morally assessing methods regulating birth ( 82). Likeise, even though he expresses unequivocal opposition to abortion, Francis does not condemn individuals, but connects issue to a fuller understing many ays human dignity life are commodified in our culture. Just as unborn child is not a piece property, ho can be disposed by abortion, neir is elderly person nor prisoner a mere piece property, to be removed through euthanasia or death penalty ( 83). In bringing se issues toger, Francis seeks not to ater-don Catholic teaching, but to sho that all auntic teaching begins ith dignity person, endoed by God ith conscience understing, ith life compassion. In concluding this chapter, Francis returns to me that family is not one community among many, but fundamental expression God s presence in orld: a God ho is alays in loving relationship, ho is self-emptying illing to suffer, ho brings life into orld through love, ho redeems our life by sharing ith us very responsibilities divine. Far from being subsumed beneath institutional Church, family is root Church, it is domestic church, calling all people to love communion. As Francis says: The Church is a family families, constantly enriched by lives all those domestic churches ( 87). While sin brokenness may be found in families ust as in Church herself underlying grace Church comes through love that finds its origin in vocation family. Summer Mass Time Change Starting Sunday, June 19 Summer Mass times are as follos: Saturday evening at 5 pm, Sunday at 9:30 am, 11:00 am, 5:30 pm. Please oin us! Throughout this latter part Chapter Three, Francis forcefully defends Catholic vision life as an inalienable right, but does so in a ay that seeks to avoid
