Each us, by our love care, leaves a mark on life ors.. Pope Francis ( 322) When I was very young, my parents would come into my bedroom as y had with all my brors sisters to teach me how to pray. Toger, we would kneel beside my bed go through Hail Mary Our Far, closing always with, Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray Lord my soul to take. Before that final prayer, however, re was always our little litany for family, which my far taught me: God bless Mommy, Daddy, Patty, Billy, Michael, Elizabeth, Grma Moriarty, Grma Whitney, little John, Tiger. To this day, I can rattle those prayers f without a moment s hesitation, usually in a single breath. And, for all names that have been added to my litany those who are now with God I still return to that prayer every night before I wer f to sleep. It was a small ritual, planted deep in me, a reminder that I was surrounded by grace God bound to my family, to God, by a Spirit I may not even notice most time. I am not sure that such rituals as bedtime prayers are as common as y were when I was a child, or if rush soccer homework, ipads television have made such moments harder to find. Yet, still re is a need, in every family, to recall that we are more than roommates, sharing a common space: we are sisters brors, husbs wives, parents children, grparents aunties, uncles inlaws. We are family drawn toger by that combination blood choice characteristic God s grace, characteristic One who takes flesh in our midst in our midst is made manifest. In final chapter Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis draws us back to that unique spirituality that unfolds in family life its relationships ( 313). Such a spirituality involves not monastic withdrawal from world, not ascetic prayer done in cloister, but communion with Christ through community with those who have been given to us by grace, those from whom we cannot hide our failures vanities, but who love us noneless. The spirituality family life means finding God in real concrete families, with all ir daily troubles struggles, oys hopes ( 315). To live in a family however it is shaped affords a person chance for daily sanctification service, wher through small acts love mercy or through great works accompaniment lifelong fidelity. Far from detracting from our spiritual development, life in a family fers a particular powerful way to God, a way filled with daily blessings opportunities for mystical union. Through our acts union with or family members, we come into greater com

3 munion with Jesus, who chose to become Incarnate in a real family; thus we become more deeply connected to God, who binds family toger allows each member to grow develop in his or her spiritual life. For Francis, cultivation a spiritual union in Christ e.g., through prayer toger, through Eucharist, etc. allows a family to survive hardships that come into every marriage, that strain every family. Wher confronted with ordinary stresses finance or parenting, or touched by great suffering that comes with loss a child or illness aging parents, families who bind ir life with each or to cross Jesus find refuge support that can help m grow closer to one anor, even in midst challenge: In darkest hours a family s life, union with Jesus in his abonment can help avoid a breakup. Gradually, with grace Holy Spirit, [ spouses] grow in holiness through married life, also by sharing in mystery Christ s cross, which transforms difficulties sufferings into an fering love ( 317). Likewise, by viewing ir life toger as part ir spirituality, oy, relaxation, celebration, even sexuality can be experienced as a sharing in full life resurrection ( 317). Though he avoids simplistic notion that all family troubles can be healed by prayer, Francis invites spouses families to see ir union with each or as grounded not simply on natural attraction or biological accident, but ultimately on Christ, Son Mary, who knew struggles blessings family life, chose to meet us re. While spiritual communion grounds all family life, particular commitments marriage go furr, revealing a spirituality exclusive freely given love: Spouses accept challenge aspiration supporting one anor, growing old toger, in this way reflecting God s own faithfulness ( 319). As discussed in Chapter Three, married couples echo life Trinity through ir constant free choice one anor a choice that transcends contractual conditions fers grace mutual selfgift. Such choice, made in freedom renewed each day, recalls fidelity God in covenant with Israel, that Christ in his covenant with Church a fidelity that arises not from duty, but from faithful love: it is a matter heart, into which God alone sees (cf. Mt. 5:28). Every morning, on rising, we reaffirm before God our decision to be faithful, come what may in course day. And all us, before going to sleep, hope to wake up continue this adventure, trusting in Lord s help ( 319). Loving in this way does not involve possessiveness or ealousy for no spouse can fully realize all needs or but involves what Francis calls interior divestment ( 320), by which spouses love for each or becomes a source healthy autonomy in each. For although love spouses echoes Trinity, it does not have fullness Trinity; rar, healthy human love will always carry us out to ors into our own spiritual ourney, even while uniting us to beloved. In grace married love, each seeks God in herself or himself, each also has friendships beyond ir spouse. The gifts that come from se relationships n become part couple s life with one anor, elements in gift self that y continually faithfully share. Recognizing that married love involves not a constricting but an opening heart, Francis goes on to discuss mission implicit in spirituality family life. For, ust as God s goodness flows out into creation world Bonum est diffusivum sui so, too, love a couple in marriage flows out as a spiritual gift that takes flesh in world that God s love creates. As mentioned in Chapter Five, fruitfulness marriage ten involves bearing children or ir adoption, but it cannot stop re. As Amoris Laetitia describes, spirituality family is a spirituality marked by this constant expansive gift self, given first all to those with whom we live, but shared as well with all peoples with that family families which is Church: We are constantly reminded that each those who live with us merits complete attention, since he or she possesses infinite dignity as obect Far s immense love. This gives rise to a tenderness which can stir in or oy being loved. Tenderness is expressed in a particular way by exercising loving care in treating limitations or, especially when y are evident ( 323). As with all true spirituality, family life leads us outward into world. Through tenderness, its particular expression in hospitality, family assumes its mission: The family lives its spirituality precisely by being at one same time a domestic church a vital cell for transforming world ( 324). In end, Francis notes, family like Church is a work in progress, whose fullness we may contemplate seek, but never completely realize in this world. For this reason, we must refrain from udging harshly those who live in situations frailty ( 325), must turn to prayer to each or. As Francis notes, in ending his exhortation: May we never lose heart because our limitations, or ever stop seeking that fullness love communion which God holds out before us ( 325). To which we should all say, Amen!
