In one form or anor, this has alays been mission of Society; but it gains ne meaning and urgency in light of needs and aspirations of men and omen of our time, and it is in that light that e examine it ane. -Decree 4, Documents of 32nd General Congregation of Society of Jesus- A little over 40 years ago, in ake of Second Vatican Council, Society of Jesus gared to rene its mission, to discern its future in a Church alive ith ne movements and ne energy. Though representatives of Society had gared ust a fe years earlier to elect a ne Superior General, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, this meeting as to be different and virtually unprecedented: called not for election of a General but to set a direction for Society as a hole, in light of Council s call to reneal. In attendance ere Provincials and delegates from around orld including a young Provincial from Argentina named Jorge Bergoglio and, though most ere of European descent (India and Africa ere almost completely represented by missionary leaders), re as a sense in entire assembly that Society as being reborn. Having suffered under Suppression, Society had remained a cautious body since time of Restoration in early 19th century; and though it had done much good, it as only ith Vatican II that it began to return to its original charism through reneed study of Spiritual Exercises and ritings of Ignatius. At this moment, it seemed right to reformulate Jesuit mission, to reassert charism of Ignatius in light of signs of times. In early March, 1975, Congregation approved, overhelmingly, Decree 4: Our Mission Today: The Service of Faith and Promotion of Justice. It as to become a atershed document, hich divided Society as it had been for 100 years from Society that ould develop in years to come. In ake of Decree 4, scores of Jesuits have been killed, and many orks once held by Society have been transformed to lay leadership, as Jesuits took up missions among those struggling for ustice. From Decree 4, one finds a straight line to murders of Jesuits in El Salvador and establishment of Jesuit Refugee Service, a natural progression to Jesuit Volunteer Corps and to greater integration of lay and Jesuit partnerships in ork of Church. Decree 4 has become deeply engrained in life of Society of Jesus today; so much so that fe could imagine a Jesuit parish or school here people ere not called to advocacy and service, to engagement ith poor and to immersion in struggles of orld. Even in ords and actions of Jesuit Pope ho calls young to make noise and all people to create a Church that brings mercy to poor, healing to earth, elcome to refugee and migrant one feels ripples of Decree 4 and Spirit ho brought it forth. In 41 years since Decree 4, Society of Jesus, in compan-

3 ionship ith its many constitutive ministries, has learned much about promoting faith through service of ustice. For one thing, e have come to see that, hile all ministries must share this mission, not all ill share it in same ay. Thus, today, Society often speaks about process of social engagement in orks of Society as consisting of five related but distinct steps, for hich different sectors and ministries may be more or less naturally attuned: Accompaniment, Service, Research, Aareness Raising, and Advocacy. Accompaniment, being on ground ith real people in oys and struggles of ir lives, is grounding for all our ministries, since ithout it ministry becomes simply an idea, a concept. Coming not as dilettantes nor colonizers, e must alk ith people of God, as Jesus did, and from m allo our service to emerge. Likeise, from our direct service, e must n ask deeper questions of structures and causes. This is notion of research, hich emerges from real problems and seeks more global solutions. Though a parish, such as St. Joseph, may be better suited to accompaniment and service, e must not forget this element of research, nor leave it ust to universities and colleges. We need to ask hard questions that confront structures of our society. Likeise, moving on from research, e as a Jesuit parish must encourage and engage in dialogue that broadens aareness. Asking hard questions, e must also seek complex ansers, hich may lead us to change and challenge a culture in hich e often find comfort. Finally, in company ith or organizations e.g., universities, Jesuit Conference, lay or Church social service organizations, etc. e must also be ready to advocate for change, illing to ork to create transformative and transformed structures better suited to ustice and mercy e proclaim in our liturgy. Through all se steps, ork of Decree 4 becomes activated, and mission of Society of Jesus becomes real. Last eek, in Dominican Republic, lay and Jesuit partners from across Central America, from Caribbean, and from North America (both United States and Canada), as ell as visitors from Colombia and Rome, celebrated anniversary of Decree 4 by continuing ork to hich it calls Society. Looking at various situations and challenges in our region e.g. effects of mining and or extractive industries on communities and on environment; groing disparity of ealth and its political effects; violence of organized crime among poor of Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico; etc. e sought to discern Spirit s call to all of us, as omen and men ignited by Spirit and committed to Ignatian charism. There as no sense among us that se ere secular matters, inappropriate to a garing of religious people and institutions. Rar, e sa in all se issues face of God ho aligns ith disenfranchised and forgotten; e heard summons of Resurrected Christ, ho embraces poor and proclaims coming of a kingdom of ustice; and e felt living Spirit, ho dells not in heaven alone but in depth of every human heart and every institution. Decree 4, so deeply planted ithin Society of Jesus, articulates in a ne ay hat as already present in proclamation of gospel; thus, in living this decree, e merely live message of Christ, translated for our on times. In coming eeks and months, I hope to invite entire community of St. Joseph including our partner ministries to reflect more fully on some of issues discussed at meeting in Dominican Republic. As part of a global community, oven toger through ministry of Society of Jesus, I hope e can revie our on ministries and find, increasingly, points of contact and collaboration ith our sisters and brors across hemisphere. While some of this already occurs e.g., in our advocacy for people of Arcatao as y face environmental and social assault from Canadian gold-mining interests I kno that re is more e can learn from one anor, and more ays e can gro to be hat e claim e are: Jesuit Parish in Seattle; i.e., companions in service of faith of hich promotion of ustice is an absolute requirement. Please note: As some of you may have heard re have been a series of break-ins and fts at local parishes. The focus seems to be on safes and trying to access Sunday collections. I anted to let you kno that e take every precaution to minimize risk for ft. We regularly monitor our safe to make sure that it is in proper orking order and limit time beteen collection and deposit so money is not onsite for any extended period of time.
