In modern times y can see nothing but prevarication ruin. They say that our era, in comparison ith past eras, is getting orse y behave as though y had learned nothing from hisry. We feel e must disagree ith those prophets gloom, ho are alays forecasting disaster, as though end orld ere at h. Pope ohn XXIII, in his opening address Vatican II One great oys my ministerial life is celebrating Sacrament Reconciliation: being fered opportunity tell a person that he is loved by God in a quite absolute ay, that she is absolved her sins because she is beloved Christ esus. To be able do this on behalf Church not because my poer but through God s grace can be truly overhelming. Yet, beyond grace reconciliation that is fered an individual, Confession can also provide insight in movement hat St. Ignatius calls enemy our human nature ithin a community; it can help reveal patterns sin that are moving through Church, causing hurt pain in various forms. It can help us see effect external events on lives individuals, ho our sense those events can corrupt our spirit. Thus, in recent months, as media has been filled ith gruesome images racism violence at home ar terror around orld, I have gron aare a deepening sense despair among many people, a sense that perhaps God does not really care about me, about us eir as individuals or as a people. Though e may blame ourselves (hich adds guilt shame our despair), e sense that God is not involved in our lives, or that e have disappointed God in some ay. As television social media overflo ith tales blood fear, manufactured outrage real despair, many us, even most faithful religious, feel alone unlovable in some deep part ourselves this loneliness comes forard in resentment or ealousy, in anger or lust, in selfrighteousness or in various forms selfhatred. Even if, intellectually, e may press personal love God, being surrounded by so many dark images hateful ords can seep in our souls, planting darkness anxiety in our hearts, leading us believe that orld is failing, that e are alone. This sense that orld is going hell in a h basket is nothing ne it can be traced back at least as far as ritings Pla; hoever, in years since World War II, natural human tendency think that things are not as good as y used be has been complicated by a level anxiety that has become nearly epidemic in our country. Inculcated anxiety by sord nuclear annihilation that hung over us during Cold War, e have had that anxiety heightened by a 24hour nes cycle that makes

3 us feel droned in disaster, by social media that makes those ith hom e have less personal contact seem more real than those e see every day. Gorged on sensation doom, e have come be like soldiers aiting for next attack: full boredom yet ever on edge; prone rage yet fiercely loyal those e consider on our side; arming ourselves ith eapons for enemies e imagine are ust about strike yet feeling, simultaneously, impotent victimized in face orld events. Wher folloing Donald Trump or Bernie Sers, NRA or Black Lives Matter, e stake out our ground hold it convinced that leftists or reactionaries, gunnuts or socialists, terrorists or corporatists are ust about destroy everything e hold dear drag us don one many dyspian futures portrayed in popular media (e.g., The Maze Runner, Hunger Games, Mad Max, etc., etc.). For many years, Church shared in this dark cloud stress censure. In ake revelations idespread abuse systemic blindness or even complicity in coverups, leadership American Church, rar than pursuing a model humility repentance hat ould become field hospital Pope Francis ten chose, instead, a bunker mentality, in hich protection organization became paramount. Even day, zealous in ir anxiety trapped in sin despair that so marks our culture, many in Church still believe that openness mercy Francis is foolish destructive. Instead, like a selfhating penitent, y seek a purification Church a purging all that is part modern orld a return a supposedly more faithful devout age. Yet, in midst our loneliness fear, in midst threats violence calls arm ourselves, in midst all darkness despair assaulting us from every screen image, it comes quietly, poerfully, inexorably, it comes: light shines in darkness, darkness has not overcome it. This eek Church celebrates Solemnity Epiphany that is, shining forth Christ in orld. In this feast, e recall light that star, hich shone in darkness, hich led three ise men three individuals ho kne nothing Covenant Abraham or La Moses, but kne ho pay attention in presence Son God. We recall ir coming, recall, as ell, all those ho did not come; those ho, like Herod, ere o caught up in ir poer or ir politics, in ir maneuvering or ir problems, notice star that shone above ir head or visit child ho ould liberate ir lives. But even for those ho did not come, manifestation God came, its light comes still, even in cold dark our orld, even hen our hearts seem close despair. For Epiphany is not a single event, but beginning a blaze that shines even no: it shines in humility Francis, sitting in a homeless shelter or elcoming a transgendered man Vatican for lunch; it shines in people a Charlesn church, forgiving man ho murdered members ir family; it shines at St. oseph, hen people embrace a far hose ife has died o soon, hen e teach our children put something y like in basket for Francis House. The light shines, darkness has not overcome it, because e are loved able love in image likeness God. St. Vincent de Paul Collection is this eekend St. oseph Community extends its prayers hopes for folloing intentions: Discernment for Patricia as she is considering buying her first house... For Rachel ho as in a car accident, may her recovery go ell... For ohn s decision about changing obs... Prayers for Pope Francis... Being thankful for all blessings given received....
