Ezekiel 11:19 Several months ago, I received a call from a former student of mine at Seattle University, hom I had not seen in years. Glecy de Leon had gone on a SEARCH retreat hen I as photographic chaplain, and had become a friend. Though e had spoken several times during her years at SU, e had lost track of each or after she graduated from School of Nursing. She had oined Peace Corps, serving to years as a health care orker in Central America. Though I kne she as back in Seattle, thanks to Facebook; I as surprised hen she called and asked to see me. Sitting in my office, she told me that she felt restless and unsatisfied. Though her ob, orking as a nurse ith heart patients in ir homes, paid ell and helped ors, she continued to long for something more. We spoke for ahile about discernment and prayer, and I tried to encourage her to trust guidance of her heart, hich seemed to me to be filled ith goodness. Then, about to eeks before Christmas, as I as riting prayers for pageant and choosing decorations for vestibule, Glecy texted me again and asked to meet. I invited her for coffee, and e sat at high table in back of Tully s, here she told me of her results of her discernment: she had left her ob in nursing and signed up ith USAID to go as a health orker to Sierra Leone, serving those infected ith Ebola virus. With a smile of both nervousness and excitement, she informed me that next day, she as heading to Maryland for to eeks of training, after hich she ould be transported to West Africa, here she ould ork for six eeks in hot and primitive conditions of an Ebola ard.

2 After those six eeks, she said, she ould be returning to States here she ould be quarantined for three more eeks before, at last, returning home. Sitting across table from this young oman, listening to her outline se plans in her gentle Filipino accent, I imagined her parents, ho had come to United States to find a better life for ir children. I am not sure this is hat y imagined, but I as sure that this as greatest sign of ir success. Indeed, I as a bit in ae of Glecy, and a bit ealous. At each mention of her trip, her face lit up ignited by poer of call she filled her ith energy and hope. Though nervous, she manifested a brilliance and zeal that touched my heart. Sensing that this as a moment of great grace an epiphany, if you ill I gave her only thing I had to give: a relic of St. Francis Xavier, that I keep in my office. Who better, I thought, to go ith her than Xavier, that andering Jesuit saint ho signed his last letter to Ignatius, your least son in farst exile. With relic in her hand, e parted ith blessings and promises of prayer. In days since Glecy left, henever I pray for her, I marvel at grace that someho moved her to take up this ork. What part of her formation and development kept her from being satisfied ith comfortable and ordinary? Someho, it seems, through example of her parents and teachers, through Seattle University and SEARCH retreats, through her reception of Sacraments and countless homilies of various quality, God had gotten to Glecy, vaccinating her against culture of self-interest and self-protection, of fear and ego that seeks to infect us all. In discerning deepest movement of her heart, this young oman had found a desire not for ealth or professional advancement, not for safety or comfort. Instead, she sensed that God as aiting for her in Africa, among poorest and most outcast of her sisters and brors. Fear, inconvenience, hardship, even udgment of those ho thought her crazy could not stop her, because Spirit of God as upon her, a Spirit to hom she has opened her life in every ay imaginable. Professed of no religious vos, except those of a baptized Christian; ordained to no priesthood, save priesthood of all believers, Glecy de Leon has accepted a call of grace, responding to it ith alacrity and oy. God has poured out Spirit of life in abundance on Church, ordaining each one of us for healing and redemption of orld. That does not mean that all of us are called to go ith Glecy to Africa, though it may mean that some of us are. What it does mean is that each one of us is called to become oman or man e are made to be, called to embrace orld ith hearts of flesh, and not of stone. With incautious desire and compassionate love, e must follo Way that Christ has cleared for us, and listen to his voice, summoning us forard. Every oman, baptized in Christ, is called to become a priest of Christ: sanctifying orld in her body and her blood. Every man, baptized in Christ, is called to become a prophet of Christ: speaking truth in face of denial and violence. Every person, baptized in Christ, is called to kingship of Christ: laying her life don for all those in need, offering himself ith love and ith oy. Some ill follo this call through parenthood or marriage, some through practice of la or building of homes. For some, call ill lead m to care of homeless youth, and for ors it ill call m to sick of foreign lands. Some it calls to political advocacy, and ors to silence of monastery. We, as a Church, must come to recognize all se calls, must come to accept ordination all have been given in Christ Jesus. In this, e acknoledge that Spirit has baptized each of us, so that all of us, toger, might live. Glecy (on left) in 1997 All Are Invited To Come Forard During communion, e invite all to come forard. If you do not ordinarily receive Eucharist, or choose not to, come for a blessing, indicating your desire by putting your hand on your heart. If you have a gluten allergy, & need of a gluten free host, please come to Presider & indicate this.

4 Dialogue ith Candidates (5) Affirmation by Sponsors and Assembly (5) Signing of Senses (5) David Haas & # c. Christ ill be your Christ Will Be Your Strength strength! Learn to kno and fol -lo him! Liturgy of Word First Reading Isaiah 55:1-11 Thus says LORD: All you ho are thirsty, come to ater! You ho have no money, come, receive grain and eat; come, ithout paying and ithout cost, drink ine and milk! Why spend your money for hat is not bread, your ages for hat fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat ell, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I ill rene ith you everlasting covenant, benefits assured to David. As I made him a itness to peoples, a leader and commander of nations, so shall you summon a nation you kne not, and nations that kne you not shall run to you, because of LORD, your God, Holy One of Israel, ho has glorified you. For ust as from heavens rain and sno come don and do not return re till y have atered earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to one ho sos and bread to one ho eats, so shall my ord be that goes forth from my mouth; my ord shall not return to me void, but shall do my ill, achieving end for hich I sent it. Assembly: Thanks be to God. Seek LORD hile he may be found, call him hile he is near. Let scoundrel forsake his ay, and icked man his thoughts; let him turn to LORD for mercy; to our God, ho is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ays my ays, says LORD. As high as heavens are above earth so high are my ays above your ays and my thoughts above your thoughts.

In this ay e kno that e love children of God hen e love God and obey his commandments. For love of God is this, that e keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for hoever is begotten by God conquers orld. And victory that conquers orld is our faith. Who indeed is victor over orld but one ho believes that Jesus is Son of God? This is one ho came through ater and blood, Jesus Christ, not by ater alone, but by ater and blood. The Spirit is one ho testifies, and Spirit is truth. So re are three that testify, Spirit, ater, and blood, and three are of one accord. If e accept human testimony, testimony of God is surely greater. No testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son. Assembly: Thanks be to God. I have baptized you ith ater; he ill baptize you ith Holy Spirit. It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and as baptized in Jordan by John. On coming up out of ater he sa heavens being torn open and Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from heavens, You are my beloved Son; ith you I am ell pleased. Pope-Pourri Dear Brors and Sisters: In our continuing catechesis on family, and inspired by Christmas image of Our Lady ho presents her Son to orld, e no reflect on role of mors in society and in Church. For all our symbolic glorification of mors, ir important contribution to life of society, ir daily sacrifices and ir aspirations are not alays properly appreciated. Mors are an antidote to spread of a certain selfcentredness, a decline in openness, generosity and concern for ors. In this sense, morhood is more than childbearing; it is a life choice, entailing sacrifice, respect for life, and commitment to passing on those human and religious values hich are essential for a healthy society. Archbishop Oscar Romero spoke in this regard of a martyrdom of mors, hose sensitivity to all that threatens human life and elfare is a source of enrichment for society and Church. Today I ask you to oin me in thanking mors everyhere for hat y are, and for all that y give to Church and to our orld. ~Pope Francis, General Assembly 7 January 2015

13 Liturgy & Worship An opportunity to reflect on Baptism young and old! The Singing Thing This eekend e celebrate Feast of Baptism of Lord, marking end of Christmas season though seemingly far removed from all festivities. The decorations at Macy s, Christmas Carols at Starbucks have long ago been left behind. Even after Christmas sales seem a distant memory, though upcoming credit card bills ill bring it back to fore for many. But in my neighborhood in Tacoma many families still have ir homes adorned ith festive lights. Our tree ill finally come don on Monday and our home ill become more reflective of Winter Ordinary Time. Because of this situation this has alays been a difficult eekend to plan liturgically. Singing Christmas Carols seems strange, though e WILL sing Christmastime Alleluia one more time! This eekend e hear story of Baptism of Jesus as he is revealed, in yet anor Epiphany, to people of his time. Tomorro e begin to hear scriptures of beginning of Christ s ministry on earth. But today e are invited to ponder baptism Christ s and our on hich initiated all of us into life as a member of Christ s body Christian community. To help us in this reflection e celebrate baptism of a number of babies born to members of St. Joseph community in past fe months. Ho many of us even remember our baptism? Unless you ere initiated as an adult as a part of RCIA it as a decision made by your parents and e didn t have much to say about it. But e have plenty to say about it no, don t e? Ho do e speak of our baptism? I am reminded of ords of St. Francis of Assisi: Preach gospel at all times use ords hen necessary. We speak of our baptism by our lives: by hat e choose to do ith gifts e have been given; by quality of our living and loving if you ill. Which also brings to mind ords of Blessed Mor Teresa We are called not to do great things but to do small things ith great love. Some of us may indeed do great things, but most of us toil in that orld here e, indeed, try our best to do small things ith great love, trusting that y ill be enough. It is enough. Ho e all long to hear se ords spoken to us and to take m to heart and truly believe that gifts e offer are enough. As e celebrate baptism of neest, youngest members of community, e are also blessed to elcome several adults, ho have begun a process of discernment into Catholic community formally via process of RCIA: Rite Of Christian Initiation of Adults. These omen and men remind us that each of us is called and chosen, and must choose our response. At 5 pm Saturday Mass e have opportunity to elcome m, and ir sponsors, as brors and sisters along Way. At this liturgy se men and omen introduce mselves to community and publicly state ir desire to continue ourney toards full initiation in Catholic church. After this community affirms ir desire and also publicly states ir promise to support and encourage m along ay. Then e celebrate one of more unusual rites in church: Signing of Senses, hereby candidates are signed ith sign of cross on various parts of ir body by ir sponsors as e call don Spirit and pray for ir strength on ourney. As gared community e give voice to this prayer by singing Christ ill be your strength; learn to kno and follo him. Folloing homily, y are invited forard again for First Acceptance of Gospel and e pray that ord may be for m a source of strength and nourishment, a light on path. Finally y are sent forth ith a member of RCIA team to reflect more deeply on ord that e all heard that day. They are no officially catechumens (those as yet unbaptized) and candidates (those previously baptized) anticipating day hen e ill be at Eucharistic table toger come Easter. Comments? Questions?
