2 NOTES FROM DIOCESAN OFFICES Diocesan Ministry Day (DMD) / V Encuentro September 24 & 25, 2017 V Encuentro update At the end of May, each parish received a packet that contained more information on the Parish Working Document and instructions on how to submit the data from each participant of the five-week process. Please remember that the information collected will be helpful for our diocesan event in September and will be submitted with the materials for the national event in Please review this packet or give it to the lead coordinator of the V Encuentro process in your parish/cluster. Finally, please begin the discernment process for who you will be sending as parish delegates. Since this mailing, no one has submitted parish consultation forms and we ve received a handful of the Parish Working Document. If you have questions, please contact Beth Neville at enmission@cloudnet.com or Timothy Johnston at tjohnston@gw.stcdio.org. V Encuentro Sunday, September 24, 2017 River s Edge Convention Center St. Cloud, MN The fifth encounter is a national process initiated by the bishops of the United States. It calls all Catholics to listen with profound attention to the needs, challenges, and aspirations that the growing Hispanic/Latino population faces in daily life. In the Diocese of Saint Cloud, the V Encuentro is a time for all local ministers (ex. priests, laity) from all Catholic organizations (ex. churches, hospitals, colleges) to gather and name our needs and brainstorm ways we might grow in the New Evangelization while strengthening our witness of the Gospel as missionary disciples. It is a time to celebrate our rich diversity and explore ministry in our region as we look to the future. Diocesan Ministry Day, Monday, September 25, 2017 River s Edge Convention Center, St. Cloud, MN, register now at This event is a gathering of people who serve the Church in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. Whether a priest, deacon, DRE, youth minister, Catholic school principal, catechist, teacher, liturgist, parish secretary or parish volunteer, this day is for you. The day includes a keynote speaker, breakout sessions, Mass with Bishop Kettler, a lunch-time with colleagues and exhibitors, afternoon core sessions and a closing of the day with Bishop Kettler. Worship Office Timothy Johnston (320) New Diocesan Stoles: The Millennium set which is currently in use is in need of replacement. The fabric used to make these stoles is no longer in production and, therefore, no longer available for purchase so the diocese must invest in a new set of stoles for diocesan celebrations. As with our previous set, Candice Koopmeiners, with the consultation of Tildy Ellis, has designed the stoles and will make them locally. It is a simple and classic design; several priests have been consulted on the project and provided helpful feedback. In the coming weeks and months, we will attempt to raise funds for this project so stay tuned for more information. Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion 2018 This liturgy will be celebrated on Sunday, February 18 at 3:00 p.m. at the cathedral. Please mark your calendars and inform the initiation team. Because there has been some recent confusion around the rite, I want to clarify that those catechumens who will celebrate the Easter Sacraments at the Vigil in 2018 must be present at the Rite of Election. This is not an optional rite. Individuals should know well enough in advance to arrange work and family schedules. Please contact the office if you have questions. Mission Office Elizabeth Neville (320) Thanks again to all who have welcomed your Missionary Appeal organizations/diocese/religious orders into your parish communities this summer. We are so blessed and grateful for the continued love and support for mission throughout the world! 4th Annual Diocesan Partnership Barndance is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th at the Wadena Fairgrounds. Mass with Bishop Kettler begins at 4:00pm with dinner (a baked potato bar with all the fixins) music, dancing, live auction, children s activities to follow. Come and join us for a wonderful evening to support all of our mission relationships and connections! Office of Social Concerns Kathy Langer (320) Rural Life Leadership Development Initiative We are currently looking for parishes for our 4 th cohort. Please call our office if you have questions or are interested in sending parishioners. See an example of the work resulting from the training in a recent Visitor article at: Muslim-Christian Relations and Immigration We have speakers available on Muslim- Christian relations and also speakers on immigration for your parishes or groups! Our sessions in parishes are going very well despite the crazy political climate. There are so many inaccuracies about these two groups of people who are our neighbors. Pope Francis encourages us to encounter one another, and the best way to do that is to bring people face to face with those who are marginalized and unknown. Please contact Kathy Langer at (320) for more information. August 2017 Clergy Bulletin 7/27/17 6
7 Coordinator of Parish Health Ministries Annette Jesh (320) The Catholic Health Care Association of the United States released Improving the Lives of Older Adults through Faith Community Partnerships: Healing Body, Mind and Spirit in May. Whatever can be done must be done to make it possible for the elderly-at-risk to remain self-sufficient and participating members of their communities. We must reawaken our collective sense of gratitude, appreciation and hospitality, helping elderly know they are a living part of their communities. Pope Francis at his Papal Audience on March 4, The guide says Faith communities and health care partnerships have the unique ability to heal body, mind and spirit. One new partnership Faith Community Nurses have been involved with is teaching evidence based health classes in churches in the Diocese. The FCN at St. Joseph Church in St. Joseph partnered with the Central MN Council on Aging to teach I CAN prevent diabetes class. All 12 who attended lost weight and lowered their higher than normal blood level risks for diabetes and heart disease and some on insulin were able to lower the amount they were taking. Now all MN Area Agencies on Aging are becoming involved in the new effort called JUNIPER, a collaborative to connect all older Minnesotans to classes to foster health and well-being. JUNIPER will be a help to faith communities in sponsoring classes in churches. Donating space and hosting a class is a way to share resources. A FCN in Pierz is taking leadership training to teach Stepping On, a fall prevention class which has been proven to reduce risk for falls. She will invite seniors of all faiths in the area to take the class. More than nine of every 10 adults live with at least one chronic condition. One out of six lives with four or more. CHA says the collaborating has advantages to Faith Communities, where many older persons have a life-long commitment and connection to their place of worship: Strengthen sense of community among congregation Reconnect with congregants no longer involved in congregation Support the work of staff and clergy Free up time of staff and clergy for other responsibilities Help link congregants and members to community resources. Catholic Charities Beth Cummings (320) th Annual Lake Wobegon Golf Benefit The 11th Annual Lake Wobegon Golf Benefit for Day Services at Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children's Home will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Albany Golf Club. Registration and lunch begins at 10:45 a.m. The Scramble Tournament begins at Noon, followed by dinner. Entry fee for this event is $75 per person and includes golf with cart, lunch, dinner & prizes. 12th Annual Lake Wobegon Regional Trail Ride The twelfth annual Lake Wobegon Regional Trail Bike Ride, a family fun event (not a race), winds its way through the communities along the Lake Wobegon trail on Saturday, September 9, All riders will start in St. Joseph this year and ride round-trip to their preferred destination. There will NOT be return transportation this year. Donation to the ride is $30 if registered prior to the event. If you register on the day of the ride, it is $35. Additional fund raising is encouraged but not required. August 2017 Clergy Bulletin 7/27/17 7
8 The primary beneficiary of the Lake Wobegon Bike Ride is Day Services at Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children s Home, a program that helps children with mental health and behavioral challenges, ages 3-18, with both therapeutic and academic services.
