July 9 Diocesan summer schedule begins. The summer weekly schedule for diocesan offices will be Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with offices closed on Friday. The regular schedule resumes Monday, August 13. July Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week Plan now to celebrate NFP Week. This year s theme from the USCCB is, Generations of Love, Humanae Vitae ( ) A colorful poster, homily notes, and other online resources are available here. Please provide your parishioners this opportunity to learn about NFP and God's plan for married love. 2 NOTES FROM THE CHANCERY Office of the Vicar General Very Reverend Robert Rolfes (320) Sister Colleen Quinlivan, OSB, assistant chancellor, secretary and receptionist at the Chancery, left us on June 30, to become secretary of her community. We are pleased to announce that we have two new staff members joining us here at the Diocese. Kari Pfannenstein started as the new receptionist/secretary for the Chancery Monday, June 25. Kristi Bivens will start on July 2 as the new associate director for lay leadership formation in Catholic Education Ministries. Kristi most recently was in the position of pastoral associate in the parishes in Breckenridge and Kent and serves on a few diocesan wide councils and groups. NOTES FROM DIOCESAN OFFICES Planning Office Brenda Kresky (320) Reminder to parishes July Mass counts are due by July 31. We use this information in a variety of ways, one of which is looking at the ten-year trend in a particular parish. If you are interested in receiving the ten-year trend, please contact the Planning Office. Tribunal Office Fr. Virgil Helmin (320) The Tribunal is continuing to attempt to meet the needs of the parish ministers as well as the laity who are divorced and seeking an annulment. We also will come to a parish and speak about the annulment process. What has been done in the past is that we are invited to a particular parish and that parish then invites the people of their community to attend this presentation. Please call our office for scheduling details. The goal would be to have at least 10 or more people sign up for these presentations. If a parishioner comes to you seeking to begin the annulment process, all forms are available on the diocesan website, The annulment forms will be on the left hand side. The last page of the formal petition is where you (their priest) will sign and give your perception of this petitioner. i.e. credibility, sincerity, and/or stability. Our hope is to supply these faithful with the correct information the first time. Our annulment forms have been updated for some time now. Please replace any prior Tribunal forms with current forms. Parish priests and secretaries are encouraged to read the Tribunal s annulment page at so questions can be easily answered. There is a wealth of information on the Tribunal s webpage. Lately, we have heard many misconceptions regarding the new annulment process. The formal petition that used to take 18 months, is now taking months and it stays in-house, unless the respondent (or petitioner) would appeal the decision to the appeals court. 3 the process could take months (we have seen longer). Canon law allows the Tribunal office 12 months to complete the formal petition. A tidbit fact: All divorced persons are in need of an annulment before remarriage in the Catholic Church can take place. If the person seeking an annulment wants to communicate directly with our office, please feel free to give them our phone number for further information: Mission Office Elizabeth Neville (320) Please be sure to send in all funds for the Catholic Relief Services Collection (Bishop's Oversees Appeal) as well as the CRS Rice Bowl as soon as possible if you haven't already. We send these funds to the national office in early July. Thank you! Delegates for the 2019 trip to Homa Bay have been accepted and the first formation begins this month. Please continue to support and pray for these representatives from your parishes and our diocese as they embark on a wonderful safari! The missionary appeals happening in your parishes are well underway and many of you have already collected and sent in your funds. Thank you! Please know that we try to send the funds collected to the organizations/dioceses/orders/ by the end of September. The Mission Office is a great place to shop for unique Fair Trade gifts for: baby and bridal showers; graduation presents; ordinations; weddings; and even wonderful chocolate and coffee for s'mores and camping! 5th Annual Partnership Barn Dance is Saturday, October 6, at Shooting Sports Center in Parkers Prairie. Come join us for great liturgy, food, fun and dancing! Worship Office Aaron Carpenter (320) Bishop Kettler to Celebrate Blue Mass Save the date for Thursday, September 13, 2018 to join Bishop Kettler for a Mass to honor police, fire and emergency medical service personnel who serve in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. Family, friends and community members are invited for the Third Annual Diocesan Blue Mass at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral of St. Mary. 4 Under the Stars Free Date night for couples, August 10 Join us at the showing of Fireproof (Spanish and English) on the Holy Spirit Church lawn. Music, popcorn, snacks, lemonade from 7:30 8:00 p.m., Welcome and prayer by Fr. Tom Knoblach at 8:15 p.m., Movie begins at 8:30 p.m. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of rain, movie will be moved inside the church. Call for more information. Fully Engaged sponsor couple training October 6 SAINT CLOUD: Fully Engaged sponsor couple training will be Saturday, October 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pastoral Center in St. Cloud. Registration for couples (names, address, phone number, parish and address) should be made at least one week (September 28) before training. Call Janet at (320) , ext. 320 or jdusek@gw.stcdio.org to register. The parish will be billed $110 per couple for the cost of training (which includes Fully Engaged supplies). Office of Social Concerns Kateri Mancini (320) The annual Rural Life Celebration, sponsored by Catholic Charities, the Diocese of St. Cloud and The Catholic Foundation, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 12. The event will take place at the Galen and Karla Stumpf Family Farm in Pierz (12344 Lake Road, Pierz, MN). The celebration will feature outdoor Mass at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Donald Kettler, immediately followed by special guest speaker Michelle Litke, local community member and cancer survivor. The festivities will continue with lunch, entertainment and activities for all ages. This event will take place rain or shine, and supports the Rural Life Fund to help those in need in our rural communities throughout the diocese. All are welcome! Rural Life Leadership Development Initiative Catholic Charities Social Concerns department is once again looking for parish leaders to participate in the Rural Life Leadership Development Initiative. This series of parish social ministry training sessions, followed by help developing community-wide initiatives and strategic planning around needs and concerns in various rural communities, is available to the parishes of the diocese free of charge, and includes the option of Certification in Parish Social Ministry for your parish leaders. Any pastors or parish staff interested in learning more, or with parishioners they would like to see participate, should contact Kateri at or kateri.mancini@ccstcloud.org Catholic Education Ministries Linda Kaiser (320) Click on the following ministries for the proposed calendars for Faith Formation, Youth Ministry and Catholic School Principal Meetings. Please share with people serving in ministry in your parishes. Some good things are on the horizon! Teacher Networking Day On August 20 a Teacher Networking Day is scheduled at St. John s University. All pastors are invited to attend even if you don t have a Catholic school to hear a keynote with Jonathan Doyle, followed by Mass at the Abbey Church with Bishop Kettler and a barbecue lunch. The day starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends after lunch. The teachers will spend the afternoon working In regional groups on curriculum. If you are interested in joining the teachers and principals for the speaker, Mass and lunch, please let Linda at CEM know at or lkaiser@gw.stcdio.org. There is no cost for a priest to attend. Parish Catechetical Leaders Retreat There is a beginning of the year retreat planned for parish catechetical leaders at Castaway August 27 and 28. 5 New Parish Catechetical Leader Day is planned for September 6 at 9:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. at the Pastoral Center for anyone new to ministry in the Church. Please contact Catholic Education Ministries at Stewardship and Development (320) Save the Date: Stewardship Day August 22, 2018 Eric McArdle is the featured speaker for this year s Stewardship Day, August 22 at St. Mary Help of Christians Parish, St. Augusta. McArdle is president and co-founder of Catholic Stewardship Consultants. For nearly 20 years, he has worked with hundreds of parishes across the country on every aspect of stewardship development. McArdle works closely with parishes and dioceses to develop spiritual-based stewardship programs that focus on communication, education, and evangelization. Bishop s Annual Appeal Update As of June 20, the Bishop s Annual Appeal has raised cash and pledges totaling $963,941 toward this year s goal of $1,300,000 (74%). The total compares to $948,909 (72.9) in cash and pledges at this time in Efforts continue to further promote the appeal and reassure donors that all funds donated will only be used to support diocesan ministries. Bishop s Annual Appeal to Distribute $212,450 for Catholic education Each year, the diocese gifts parishes to assist with youth faith formation and to help abate parish costs for Catholic school subsidies. This year s distributions will total $212,450. The funds come from Bishop s Annual Appeal proceeds and are meted out to parishes and some schools according to their census counts: Parishes supporting students in Catholic schools receive a gift based on $55 per enrolled Catholic school students, grades 1 8. Parishes that do not have a Catholic school receive a gift based on $5 per student in religious education, grades K 12. Cathedral High School and St. John s Prep receive a distribution for some of the students enrolled. Checks are expected to be mailed in July. Coordinator of Parish Health Ministries Annette Jesh (320) Six RNs were commissioned as Faith Community Nurses (FCN) on April 20 by Pastor Diana Dunham from Grace United Methodist Church. Three FCNs are working in parishes in our diocese, Julie Kouba in St. Francis Xavier Church in Sartell, Joyce Uselman is at St. Ann s Church in Wadena and Peggy Gracula in Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Millerville. 6 The Faith Community Nurse Partnership received a CentraCare Health Foundation grant to bring classes to St. Cloud. A class is being planned for fall Some scholarships will be available. Save the Date: Tuesday, October 2 Fall workshop: Courage for Caregivers: Sustenance for the Journey with Michelle O Rourke from the Henry Nouwen Society s newest work to support caregivers. Be inspired, to the Callings of Caregiving, and reflect on the belovedness caregivers share with the people they care for. How do we identify and work alongside our members and caregivers to sustain families in our faith communities? For more information, visit: Catholic Charities (320) Group to match donations to Catholic Charities Food Shelf in July It s a strange dichotomy: Food shelves are used most in the summer, but most donations come in the winter. That s why Hunger Solutions of Minnesota and Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless work together to proportionally match donations to Minnesota food shelves during the month of July. Catholic Charities Emergency Services Food Shelf is once again participating in the challenge.
