The harvest is great but the laborers are few. Luke 10:2 Pastoral Council Once again we have had a successful parish picnic. Thanks to all those who planned, organized and worked the event, especially the Knights of Columbus for their culinary efforts. This last week the Church honored St. Peter and St. Paul, both of whom were true building blocks for the Church. Their feast day falls just days before the birthday of our own nation. So as we celebrate the Declaration of Independence, let us also celebrate and remember the lives of St. Peter, our first Pope, the rock on which Christ built his Church and St. Paul who instructed the early Christians through his life and letters. As Paul writes: "And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." 2 Fr. Chuck s Corner Greetings and God s blessings be yours on the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Plus it is the Fourth of July-Independence Day! Today we give thanks to God not only for the great gift of his Son, Jesus but also for the gift of our country, the United States of America. The birth of our nation is an important event to be celebrated and reflected upon each year. The quality of our lives, the joys and benefits we enjoy and most of all the privilege of freedom should give us all pause to prayerfully give thanks to God and to those whose sacrifices in the past and present ensure we have an Independence Day each year to celebrate. I believe that today s readings are a call to be involved in making the Kingdom a lived reality in our midst. We don t want to just see the Church as a rest stop, a habit or duty, a dispenser of sacramental and other services. Deep down we all want the Church to be life-giving, filled with joy and with a sense of purpose in promoting the Kingdom. Isaiah speaks of Jerusalem as being a life-giving mother while the psalmist cries out to God with joy, praise and worship. Then Paul says that mercy and peace belong to those who become a new creation in Christ. And in Luke s gospel the 72 are sent on a mission to heal and proclaim the Kingdom. The blessing of peace will rest on those who live in peace. Herein lies the very catholicity of the Church. A greater number is sent out that represents not only the 12 tribes of Israel, but all nations. The gospel is for all people, and the ministries of the Church-healing, teaching and preaching-are not intended just for insiders. These apostles show unity by traveling in pairs and reveal their holiness in not jostling for better homes or finer meals. Their apostolic mission is obvious. They are sent by Jesus to return to him faithfully. May we learn well from today s messages of trust in God and faithfulness to Christ s mission; all while being at and living together in peace. Okay, now a little bit of personal stuff. First of all I wish to thank everyone at St. Raymond s for such a warm and friendly welcome as your new pastor. It has been truly touching and humbling to me. It is never easy to leave a home and begin again, but that is the nature of our calling as diocesan priests. I have been blessed with wonderful parishes and people to serve in over thirty years as a priest of the Rockville Centre Diocese. And now I am here as one of you to journey together in faith, hope and love. I feel privileged being the pastor of St. Raymond s, which has such a rich history and wonderful spirit of service and love of the Lord. I look forward to many years as your pastor, God willing. Actually, coming to St. Raymond s is sort of a homecoming for me. I grew up in Valley Stream, in the Gibson section, which borders on Lynbrook and Hewlett. My father still lives in our family home right next door to my sister and her family. My brother is also close by with his family in Malverne. Our parish is St. Joseph s in Hewlett, which by the way has Father Tom Moriarity who comes from St. Raymond s as pastor. I graduated from St. Joseph s Grammar School in 1966 and St. Pius X Prep seminary in Then I attended the college seminary in Douglaston and finally Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington. I was ordained in 1979 by Bishop Gerald Ryan in St. Joseph s Church, Ronkonkama, where I was serving as deacon. I started my priesthood assignments at St. Ignatius Martyr, Long Beach and then St. Kilian, Farmingdale, Holy Spirit, New Hyde Park and from there was appointed pastor of Infant Jesus Church in Port Jefferson where I served these past 12 years. So what do I like? Well, I enjoy the theatre and all sports, though my playing days are long gone. I love Irish music and Italian food, which goes with my Irish/Italian heritage. One side does the bad stuff and the other side makes me feel guilty. In sports I do have one passionate allegiance, which I know will be a sore point for some people. I was actually born in Boston, though I didn t live there very long-but just long enough to catch the Red Sox gene. I think you know where I am going with this. So one of my favorite Broadway shows is Damn Yankees. I also root for the Mets, the Giants, Rangers and even the sorry Knicks. That s enough about me for now. Again, I want to sincerely thank everyone, the staff, priests, deacons and all of you, even St. Raymond Yankee fans, for the way I have been welcomed to the parish. Please bear with me awhile as I learn the lay of the land and all that goes into transitioning as your new pastor. I will pretty much use this format in the weekly bulletin to share my thoughts, Sunday reading reflections and goings on at St. Raymond s. Enjoy the holiday weekend. 3 PARISH BULLETIN BOARD STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK In today s second reading, St. Paul provides a wonderful one-sentence summary of Christian stewardship: Out of love, place yourselves at one another s service. HAPPY 4 TH OF JULY! Can you believe that half the year has gone by so quickly? Time does seem to fly but, what have we accomplished so far this year? How many hours have we spent in front of the T.V., logged on to the computer, talking or texting on the phone? Are these activities the reason that we don t have time to be good stewards of our time? It s not too late to evaluate how productive is our time and if our priorities are in order. If we find ourselves complaining that we don t have time to spare, perhaps we are not spending our time correctly. A pause to assess our goals is something we need to do periodically in order to learn if we are, in fact, achieving our objectives and if we are on the right track. WE ARE THE HANDS OF CHRIST Stewardship is a way of life. God has gifted each and every one of us. Thank you for responding to God s generosity in your life and sharing in the mission of Jesus. As the hands of Christ and stewards of God s gifts we are challenged to: Love as Jesus loves; Share as Jesus shares; Serve as Jesus serves; and, Live as Jesus lives! If you would like to add a name to this list, call the rectory at Or send your request via StRayRcc@optonline.net Since we are a people of Faith, and have a spiritual journey to accomplish, how much of our time is invested in reaching that destination? Is our spiritual life a priority, or do we put it on the back burner? When we assume that we will have time later to take care of important priorities, we are fooling ourselves, for there is never enough time unless we make the time, and only God knows how much time we have or will have. So, let us not waste our time, talent or lives on things that do not matter in the long run. Before any more time passes, let us listen for God s call, seek out His plan and Just Do It NOW! 4 PARISH BULLETIN BOARD Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Shortly after the discovery of America, St. Francis Xavier was born in Spain. He became a fine athlete and went to the University of Paris. There, he felt the call to the priesthood and became a missionary to India. In a letter from India he repeated Jesus words in today s gospel: The harvest is rich but the workers are few. Francis wrote: The native Christians have no priests. There is nobody to say Mass for them; nobody to teach them. Many people are not becoming Christians for one reason only; there is nobody to make them Christians. Again and again, I have thought of going around the universities of Europe and crying out like a madman for young people to come and help me. Today, we don t have to go across the world to make Christians. Today, we don t have to preach from pulpits to convert people to Christianity. Today all that we have to do is to preach by our lives and be a Christian witness to move people to our faith. That s what my order in India is doing. In a country where Christianity is just 3% and conversion is a very sensitive, political issue, we try to preach by our work among the poor in remote, non-christian areas. I hope to do that when I return to India in September. We all as Christians can do that in our own homes, offices and neighborhoods. That s our task this week and ahead. Mission News Our parish missionaries have now been in Guatemala for one week. They have visited many places including our two Sister Parishes of St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Guadalupe. They have had the opportunity to pray with our Guatemalan friends and also socialize with them. There has been a lot of singing and dancing. On the last night of each trip to Novillero, the host family gives us a despedida or going away party. There will be plenty of laughter. The party ends though on a sad note. Adrian Cochoy, the head of our Mission Project, will get up and give a speech. Each visitor from St.Raymond s will be mentioned and he will thank him or her for what they have brought to his home during the visit. He will remind them that they are always welcome back. Then the visitors are called on to say a few words of thanks. It becomes a very emotional moment for all. Each night of the trip has ended with our group singing Ubi Caritas. Translated the song means: Where there is Love there is God. God is surely present in our Sister Parish and in the Cochoy home. St. Raymond Human Life Committee July 4, 1776 We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. (The Declaration of Independence) Please note the words Created equal, endowed by the Creator and inalienable rights mean that from the moment of each individual s creation, which scientifically is at conception not birth, we are equal, and that each of us has been given by our Creator, not the courts or another human being, Inalienable rights, meaning rights that cannot be taken away. Isn t it ironic that our forefathers over 200 years ago, who had not the knowledge of fetal development in the womb as we do today, would, nonetheless, realize that our basic right to life is first and foremost a gift our of our Creator and must be protected by law. And yet today, with the aid of modern technology, we can see into the womb of a pregnant woman that there is clearly a human being at his or her earliest stages of development, growing and moving and people are championing the right of a mother to kill that innocent human being. Until the right to life is extended to all our human family, the babies in the womb included, we, as a people, as a nation, have not lived up to the full potential and greatness of The Declaration of Independence. There is hope for our country. More Americans now call themselves pro-life rather than pro-choice on the issue of abortion, the first time a majority has given that answer in 15 years. We have a long way to go but at least we re headed in the right direction. Please continue to work, pray and vote for the day when the babies in the womb have the same legal protection that we now enjoy and cherish the Right to Life. Page 4
