Reconciliation and First Eucharist for Children After Baptism, we continue our initiation into the Catholic faith by celebrating the Sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation. Reconciliation is a Sacrament of Healing. Reconciliation and Eucharist are celebrated at different times and ages. Preparation for these Sacraments has a requirement of at least three years. Primary age sacrament preparation is taught in addition to regular faith formation instruction in the classroom. Children are involved in a process requiring enrollment in a Faith Formation program or Catholic school. Parents become involved at home with userfriendly Reconciliation and Eucharist preparation materials. Occasional parent sessions and family gatherings are required as well as a half-day retreat for both youth and parents before First Eucharist. 7 Page 7 Sunday, April 15, 2012 St. Timothy s News Pastoral Outreach and Community Services A Reflection for the Second Sunday of Easter We Christians have long been criticized by certain religious thinkers for anthropomorphizing God. In other words, making God into our image and likeness. They certainly have a point because our human minds, marvelous as they are, cannot comprehend the infinite nature of the Godhead. And we deserve to be chided if we see God as a cloud-riding Santa Claus with a bundle of toys in one hand and a cluster of thunderbolts in the other. But we might as well face it: it is hard to love transcendent reality or to put our arms around universal mind. When God created us, He gave us a right brain as well as a left one and must have expected us to use our creative imagination to draw closer to Him. How else can we describe our experience of God other than by poetry and art and metaphor? The real reason we are able to love God, however, is far more powerful than human creativity and aesthetics. For God Himself bridged the gap between His unknowable nature and our human minds by sending His divine Son to live and die among us and for us. Jesus became man not only to reconcile mankind with the Father through His death on the cross, but also to show us how to live a human life to the fullest, to smell the flowers, to taste the wine, to fall in love with God and all God s creatures and to know that God s intense personal and intimate affection for each one of us suffuses every moment and every activity, no matter how mundane, of our lives. The following excerpts from Terry Hershey s book, Sacred Necessities, express it well: I remember the first time my spiritual director told me to spend time in this grove [ at St. Andrews Abbey in Valyermo]. He gave me a pad of paper and pencil, and asked me to spend twenty or thirty minutes alone, silent, listening, in order to write down whatever God tells you. Okay, I tell him gamely. When I returned after my requisite thirty minutes, I confessed my inability. Apparently I didn t understand the assignment. But your notebook is full, he notices. Of course it s full, I had thirty minutes to kill out there. I needed something to do to keep from going stir crazy. He reads my list aloud. Change oil in car. He laughs. Hey, I protest. It s my to-do list for the week. Not all of us can spend our days sitting among the trees listening to God. Okay, he tells me, but who are you to tell God that He can t be involved in your oil change? He laughs. I get the point. It is most appropriate that Child Abuse Prevention Month is held during the Lenten and Easter seasons as there is no better time than this when we experience renewal and growth that we celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God our children. With 2012, the Catholic Church looks back on a decade of learning about a problem which may be decades of centuries old; the sexual abuse of minors by those who would mentor them. In the United States, the Catholic Church adopted a plan to address the issue, called the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. It has spent billions of dollars on settlements, safe environment education, and background checks to do all it can to prevent the abuse of children in its care.
