3 St. Martha, Dearborn - St. Joseph, Dearborn Page 3 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT Thanksgiving weekend, with its compressed timeline, is the busiest time for travel. But Christmas is not that far behind. The days immediately before Christmas involve people returning home to be with family for the holiday. The days after Christmas are packed with families traveling for a quick vacation while the children are out of school for a week. The 1844 poem "Over the River and through the Woods" by Lydia Maria Child was originally about journeying to grandfather's house for Thanksgiving Day. Later recorded versions turned it into a Christmas song describing the sleigh ride to grandmother's house. Either way, for a long time these winter holidays have involved traveling. This weekend's Gospel is another traveling story. Pregnant with Jesus, Mary leaves the confines of Nazareth in Galilee and heads south, up into the hill country of Judea. Is she fleeing because she has no husband yet? Is she going to seek the counsel of an older kinswoman? Or is she just heading off on a friendly little visit? We don't really know. Luke doesn't tell us, and so her journey is open to speculation. But Mary's arrival is the first occasion of an expression of joy about the birth of the Savior. Elizabeth proclaims that the infant in her own womb leaped for joy because of the nearness of salvation. We know that experience. Think of what happens when family or friends finally arrive after a long journey to spend some time over the holidays. They are welcomed and greeted and made to feel at home. This is our natural reaction to seeing folks who have not been around for a while. We are glad that they are here. Now, take that very natural human reaction and imagine what it will be like to welcome Christ. Through baptism, we are his brothers and sisters. We are family. And when he returns we will welcome him with great joy! SHARING THE GOSPEL When Mary visited Elizabeth, they were both waiting for their babies to be born. Elizabeth's baby would grow up to be John the Baptist. Mary's baby would grow up to be Jesus our savior. Mary and Elizabeth were excited to see each other, not only because they loved each other, but also because they both loved God very much. It makes God happy when we love our relatives and friends, just like Mary and Elizabeth did. PRAYER Dear God, help me to love you. Take care of my family, my cousins, and all my relatives at Christmastime and always. Amen. Dear God, We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servants to health. MISSION OF THE WEEK If your relatives come to visit you, welcome them with a cheerful greeting. If you go to visit them during the Christmas season tell them how much God loves them.
4 Page 4 St. Martha, Dearborn - St. Joseph, Dearborn DIRECTORY Rev. Terrence Kerner, Pastor Rev. John Sajdak, Weekend Associate ST. JOSEPH CHURCH THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD It is the festival of our Savior's birth, the day we celebrate that salvation has dawned upon the world. Christ is born, and we rejoice that he has come among us in the flesh, our God made visible in an infant child who would one day give up his life for us. This is the heart of the Christmas mystery: that Christ is born for us today. This feast is so much more than a historic anniversary. Christmas celebrates the coming of God among us, born as a human person. Christ's birth has an effect in our lives today. His birth transcends history and changes us. He brings us light and life. Think of the symbols of the season. The crèche tells us the Gospel stories: first from Luke, which details the human birth in a lowly stable and the angels' message to shepherds about the birth of a Savior; and later from Matthew, which describes the arrival of Magi who signify that God's salvation extends to all. The wreath made of evergreens reminds us that God is one, without beginning or end, and even though we celebrate the human birth of Christ, he remains God, begotten of the Father before all ages. The tree stands as a symbol of life, its green branches unfading even in the winter cold, just as God's life remains in us even though our human form should die. The candles we burn at this time of year recall the birth of him who is forever the light of the world, showing us the way to the eternal Father. The angels stand as heralds of the good news, an emblem for each of us on this solemn feast of our own duty to spread the message that Christ is born and saves us from our sins. We rejoice this day in the birth of Christ! We renew our faith in his power to save as he joins earth and heaven through his coming in the flesh Liturgical Publications Inc THE TWELVE DAYS OF The time between Christmas (December 25) and the traditional date for the celebration of the Epiphany (January 6) was a period of feasting and great joy. Different religious traditions led to the relative importance of one feast over the other in Western (Latin) and Eastern (Greek) Christianity but both feasts were celebrated. The tomfoolery and merrymaking that characterized these winter days were immortalized in Shakespeare's play, Twelfth Night. A well-known carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" celebrates the season as well. Likely coming from the French, the song was first-published in English in In its first sixty years in English, there were numerous variants of the gifts, but mass-produced sheet music in the mid-1800s, led to the song we sing today Rotunda Drive Dearborn MI ( Fax) WEEKEND LITURGIES: SATURDAY 5:30 p.m. SUNDAY 9:00 a.m. WEEKDAY MASSES Thursday 9:00 a.m. & Devotions Friday Mass 9:00 a.m. Confessions Call for appointment MUSIC MINISTER David Passeno ST.
