It was also a time for us to disconnect with much of the busyness of the world and spend some time apart. (Cell phones don't work in most of the national parks or campgrounds much to my children's chagrin.) That disconnecting was as important as the trip itself. The Gospels often mention that Jesus went up the mountain to pray...sometimes he was by himself, sometimes with several of the disciples. In any event the pattern of His life included some time away from the usual routine to reflect and to pray...and to connect with God. Here in the office we have joked on and off over the summer about how things have not slacked off much in terms of activity either in the Parish or in the community. There has been a lot going on recently. Much of it Good; some of it not so good. I would encourage you to find some ways to disconnect and sit with God for while. And remember these words from Christ at the end of Matthew... I am with you always...even to the end of the age. Pastor Peter 1

Bethany Members This Sunday, July 30, 2017 Bethany will conduct a very brief special meeting immediately following the church service. Please make plans to attend the meeting so that we will have enough attendees for a quorum needed to conduct business. The only agenda item is the ratification of a revised church constitution, which was approved at the January annual meeting. The draft constitution is available for review in the church office Monday through Friday from 9 AM until 12 PM. Thank you for the beautiful floral bouquet-my favorite kinds and colors of flowers-and for the gift certificate for a relaxing massage. Thank you to all for attending and for your cards of best wishes. I will still be around-just changing roles! Both congregations have been a pleasure to serve these past 7 1/2 years. 3 Back to School Month School is right around the corner! But imagine being a child or teen with an emotional or behavioral disorder. This time of year can be extremely stressful. They are afraid they won t be able to concentrate or fit in at their school. They worry about the transition adjusting to a new classroom routine. Did you know Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) partners with schools across the state to provide mental health services right in their communities? Our therapists can work one-on-one with children while our Behavioral Health Intervention Services team is there to collaborate with families in their home and develop skills like anger management and decision-making. Learn more at and Happier, healthier families For years, Bia struggled with her daughter s behaviors. McKenna, 8, lashed out against authority, and tempers regularly flared at home. It took a little more time to work with her on anything, Bia said. Bia couldn t find a way to help gain control of her child, and she became more and more frustrated. That s when her DHS social worker recommended LSI s Families Together program. Through the program, Bia regularly meets with her Families Together worker, Gaylene. Together, they are working on what Bia calls a three-step technique. Whenever a possible argument comes along, I start by telling McKenna to go take a break and reset herself. Then I can go calm down and eventually, we can talk it out, Bia says. It s teaching both of us. My main goal right now is to learn how to better handle McKenna and better handle myself. Bia is also practicing the technique with her younger daughter, Brynn, which she says is working perfectly. It s drastically improving the way her family communicates, and Bia says she has recommended Families Together to any friends looking for guidance. I love the program, she says. I love how it works and I know if I have questions, they can give me advice on how to go about things. School kits for Lutheran World Relief Back to School supplies are on sale so now would be a good time to stock up on supplies needed for the LWR school kits. The following supplies are needed: 70-sheet notebooks of wide or college-ruled paper approximately 8 x10 ½ 30 centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other Eraser, approximately 2 ½ long Pencil sharpener Blunt scissors Unsharpened # 2 pencils with erasers Ballpoint pens (no gel ink) Box of 16 or 24 crayons Thank you! School is starting the end of August so keep in mind the following items to save for the school students. The labels are taken to West Elementary and the Catholic School. Box Tops, Pizza Ranch Wagon Wheels off pizza boxes, Real Seal on Pizza Hut pizza boxes, Pop tabs, Campbell Soup labels and postage stamps. Diane has cancer which has now spread. Previously Diane operated a Daycare and you ve seen Diane and her family working at Fareway. There is a benefit planned for Saturday, August 5 at the VFW in Emmetsburg. Doors open at 3:30pm with meal from 4:30-7pm, hamburgers (cattlemen grilling), salads, bars, chips and drink. 4:30-7 pm will be a Silent Auction with Live Auction to begin t 7 PM. Cash donations accepted at Wells Fargo Bank. Thank you for your support. 8 Courtney is in the USA for a 6 month furlough and will return to Papua New Guinea in January 2018 as a career staff member. She teaches music in the school as well as conducting Bible Studies, etc. We will look forward to seeing Courtney as she visits and speaks at churches and with partners. 5
