At the moment the snow is gone, and we are winding our way toward summer. Our program year has pretty much ended, and we can step back a bit and take a little break. We can sit on the patio and barbeque, and we can breathe. The reality is that we may be no less busy than we were before but the type and pace of our activity changes and that change provides a nice break and time of refreshment. This is also not a new idea. From the beginning of creation God himself built in a time of refreshment and renewal which he called the Sabbath. God reminded His people of the importance of Sabbath time in the 10 commandments which laid out the importance of not neglecting our time with Him. Jesus himself practiced this Sabbath time throughout his ministry...we see him time and again, taking intentional time to connect with God and with his disciples. We see him time and again switching the pace of his activity and life, so that his spirit might be refreshed and renewed for what is to come. I would encourage you during this summer "break" to pay attention to your own rest and renewal. Take a deep breath, pay attention to how God is moving around you, in you and through you during this season. Since we are just coming off of Pentecost I would be interested to know how the Spirit is moving you these days. Keep an eye out for surprises and enjoy your summer! ((Cont d. page 2 1
2 (Cont d. from Page 1) Opportunities for new things this summer- FAITH ON TAP- will meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at the Cornerstone Grill beginning June 7th. This will be an informal discussion about faith and life, and other questions you may have around a table with friends and the beverage of your choice. DAY OF FUN FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP- Sunday th at Centennial Park in Ruthven, Noon to whenever. Bring a dish to share and join with the folks of the parish for fun and games, food and general hanging out. (Vicar Sarah has more details on this.) and as always...don't forget to worship! CALLING FOR ALL HANDS ON DECK... ~From the Internship Committee Due to unforeseen circumstances we are in the position that we need to: 1) Find housing for Vicar Sarah and her family 2) Help them move to new housing and then also help them pack to move at the end of her internship in August. The first urgent need is to find housing for the family. They MUST be out of their current house by July 11. If you know of any property available from now until the beginning of August, please contact Kim Campbell ( or kcampbell@iowalakes.edu) so we can get the wheels turning quickly. We must secure housing so that Vicar Sarah is able to complete her internship among us as smoothly as possible. The second need is that we MUST have people to help them move into their new housing and also to pack in August. There were very few people present to help them move in last September so we are hoping for a better turnout for both of these events. If you are able to help with either or both of these events, please contact Kim Campbell ( or kcampbell@iowalakes.edu). 3 In lieu of a note from Vicar Sarah: IN OUR PRAYERS: We remember those in special need of God s love and care including: RoxAnn Hanson,(Verna s daughter-in-law), Linda Umbrell, Phyllis Schroeder, Vicki Ellis, Orville Stephas, Janis Campbell, Marilyn Egland, Debra Zanfes, Curt Ackerman, Jim & Bonnie Anderson, Fern Schmidt, Heide Rienhardt, Garwin Anderson, Lois Quam, Pastor Trudy Peterson, Rod Snavely, Nancy Ziegler, Bob & Janet Mortenson, Lucille Anderson, Richard Omundson and those we name in our hearts. You re InvIted!! Who? You! What? 1st Annual Day of Fun, Food, and Fellowship! When? Sunday th Noon-4 Where? Centennial Park in Ruthven *Our missionary: Courtney Davis in Papua New Guinea. *Our companion synods: The Southern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania-Yakobi Parish, companion with Lost Island and the Evangelical Lutheran Church Laz-Paz Parish in Chile, companion with Bethany. A potluck dish to pass, and your swimming suit if you wish Why? At the Joint Council meeting this past fall, it was made known that there is a feeling of disconnect between the two congregations, largely due to a lack of fellowship with one another. While both congregations have events in which the other congregation is invited to participate, one congregation is always the host, while the other is the guest. Therefore, on behalf of Pastor Peter, Kristin, and many volunteers from both congregations, I would like to invite you to the First Annual Bethany and Lost Island Day of Fun, Food, and Fellowship! This event, which we hope to have continue each year towards the beginning of the summer, will be a potluck picnic hosted by both congregations together as a way for us all to get to know each other in a neutral setting. We will be providing burgers, buns, and hotdogs, please bring your own favorite dish to pass. There is a playground for kids, as well as many activities planned by members of your congregations, swimming, volleyball (get a team together or join one when you get there!), and a lot of fun to be had by all! Sarah is asking for large boxes to pack their things in in preparation for their two moves. She stated that they have plenty of the small sized boxes but are needing the larger ones. She shares her Thanks to you for any that you can part with. We hope to see you there!! Sarah 10 3
4 Hello Family, On behalf of all the youth and their families, I want to thank you for all you have done to support them. Thank you for all that you do. It has been a great year of ministry and growth. It is always neat to watch the craziest to the quietest youth grow in their faith. In moments of trial and moments of triumph they come together and support one another and it is so incredible to be apart of witnessing that unity within the body. Noisy offering for June is going to Kingdom House. Time to Register for VBS Babylon! This year s Vacation Bible School will be held July 31st August 2nd, 2018 at the Lost Island Lutheran Church, Ruthven. Registration forms will be in the Overflow Room at Bethany and at the Lost Island Church. There will be a joint celebration on August 5th at Lost Island. You can also register by going to LostIslandLutheran@gmail.com. We are looking for volunteers to help with transportation, job assignments and other needs that come up. Kingdom House: Through holistic programs and services, we help the economically disadvantaged achieve economic independence, self-sufficiency and a path out of poverty. The mission trip youth will be serving at Kingdom House and the items your financial help will cover are: Craft Items (construction paper, paints (acrylic and poster paint), liquid Elmer's glue, hot glue guns and glue sticks, Perler beads, plain white T-shirts (kid sizes - S, M, L, XL), poster board, scotch tape, and painter's tape); cooking utensils (spatulas, baking sheets, tongs, muffin pans, measuring cups, mixing bowls, oven mitts, large spoons, etc.); Swimsuits and lined swim trunks (kids' sizes, S, M, L, XL) School is out for the summer but that does not mean we can stop collecting these items. They will be used for the next school year. The labels are taken to West Elementary and the Catholic School. Box Tops, Pizza Ranch Wagon Wheels off pizza boxes, Pop tabs, Campbell Soup labels and postage stamps. There are white boxes on the credenza in the overflow room to collect your labels. Thank you. The youth will be leaving bright and early on Sunday, th and returning late Friday, June 29th. Please continue to pray for them as they prepare for this trip. Pray for God to start preparing them even now for this trip and what He will reveal and teach to them. Thanks, In Christ, Kristin Remember to put th on your calendar for the Day of Fun, Food and Fellowship at Centennial Park in Ruthven for the Lost Island and Bethany Churches. There will be volleyball, swimming, bag toss and other fun activities for all ages. The hours are 12 Noon 4 pm. Just remember to bring something for the Potluck and your beverage Dan and Sarah are providing the meat and Pastor is bringing the grill. If you have some other ideas of things to do, please do not hesitate to contact either Sarah at or Diane at the Office at Quick note - The Stewardship committee is looking for some creative people to help with planning and presenting a project. It would involve some art work, writing, prepping a dinner and other things. If interested, call Pastor Peter or Joe Neary. Also, since we missed Church one Sunday in April, please consider playing "catch up" with your offering. Thank you. 4 9
