1 God s purpose for Glenwood Lutheran Church is that we accept all people, share the Good News, and help those in need. The monthly newsletter of Glenwood Lutheran Church July 2017 ANNUAL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS Sunday, June 25, 2017 Delano Dancy was honored for all his help with The Giving Store. Harold Morgan and Norm Uhlman were thanked for their time on council. Congratulations to those who were elected to council: Jerry Brucksieker, Sue Brzezowiez, Eric Knaggs, Carol Stacy, and Polly Tate. ROAD WORK As work on the Monroe St. overpass at Lawrence progresses this summer, the orange barrels continue to move in front of Glenwood. If at some point, the front parking entrance is blocked, you can drive around back via Glenwood Ave. or Oakwood to Grove Place, enter Glenwood s back lot, and take the alley to the Monroe St. lot. Reformation 500 Crawl Saturday, July 29 As we celebrate the 500 th anniersary of the Reformation, the Northwestern Ohio Synod Reformation Team is offering opportunities for folks to learn about our Lutheran heritage. On July 29 and October 21, each of the seven conferences has various sites providing Reformation-related experiences. The schedule for the Toledo conference follows. At these sites at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m.: (20-30 minutes for each presentation.) Learn about brewing beer from brew master, Rev. Tom Schaefer, and raise a glass to Martin and Katie Luther, who brewed her own beer too. Black Cloister Brewery 619 Monroe St., downtown Toledo Enjoy a mini-concert of Reformation music with organist/ut professor, Dr. Pam Stover at Hope Lutheran, 2201 Secor Rd. Any time 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Download a list ( of Reformation related artwork and do a self-guided tour at the Toledo Museum of Art Recall the history of Lutheran commitment to helping the vulnerable at the Lutheran Orphan and Old Folk Home Archives, 2411 Seaman St., Toledo. If you wish to visit sites in one of the other conferences, visit and download the full Reformation Crawl schedule.

2 Dear Friends in Christ, Have you ever had a moment when you re talking to someone and you realize that you re not having a conversation, because they re the only one talking, or you are witnessing - or entangled in - an argument where both people are talking and no one is listening? A conversation where people actually talk, listen, ask good questions, because they re genuinely interested, those are rare gifts. Ministry, the work of serving God and serving each other, the stuff we are all called into as disciples of Jesus, is truly a conversation. We listen and speak only because we have listened to and have been spoken to by the One who formed us from dust and loves us into being. This summer we will begin to listen more carefully, to each other and to our neighbors. We will begin with small gatherings, six to eight people, at a variety of locations. Some folks call such gatherings Cottage Meetings. Others call them focus groups. You know what I hope for them to be: real, honest conversations. I ll be responsible for facilitating and taking notes. This will be an opportunity for every single person to be in a small discussion group with your pastor and to say whatever it is you would like to contribute. This listening and speaking honestly could not be more important as we discover how to be the church together as our presiding Bishop Eaton urges us. We are not here to have a -versation in which I make idiosyncratic changes or in which I am the sole spokesperson to the Old West End from our community. We will have conversations, intimate communications held carefully and with many neighbors to discover where God is moving! As Bishop Daniel said at my installation, God speaks in symphony. God is speaking in our neighborhood. We are called to attune our ears and our eyes as we communicate and to attune the wholeness of our bodies in prayer and worship so that we might discover what both churches and secret agents must always discover with both excitement and apprehension: what is our next mission. Stay on the lookout for sign-up sheets to join in the conversation. My goal is that I will be able to listen to every single stakeholder in this assembly of disciples in a setting of six to eight people. And now to the One at work within us, who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than we can ever ask or imagine, to that One glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. (Ephesians 3:20-21) Grace and peace in Jesus name, Pastor Chris Hanley

3 Pastor Chris with Annelle Donaldson PASTOR CHRIS IS INSTALLED AS GLENWOOD S PASTOR June 13, 2017 Bishop Beaudoin RESPONDING TO HUMAN TRAFFICkING The offering that evening was designated to The Daughter Project, Ohio s first licensed recovery home for adolescent survivors of sex traffickers. In the last four years, they have helped 15 young ladies between the ages of 12 and 17 begin their life-long journey of recovery. We are thankful that through your generosity, we are sending The Daughter Project $556. An Adult Forum on Sunday, August 6 will explain more about The Daughter Project and sex trafficking in the Toledo area.

4 Mark your calendar for the annual church picnic! July 30 Following worship that day, you are invited for fun, fellowship and a tasty picnic lunch in Jones Hall! Invite your family and friends too! COUNCIL NEWS Sunday, June 18, 2017 Discussion and preparations for the Annual Meeting, June 25 was shared. 5 Thank you for your prayers, cards, and visits. I m doing great! Kathy Pinkstaff *********** The family of Dorothy Rehder would like to thank everyone for their kind words, hugs, love, and prayers we received during this very difficult time. The luncheon after the service was delicious and provided us time to share our memories together. Glenwood was always an important part of her life and the friendships she had made were very special. Thank you also for the cards and memorials we ve received. ************ Sue Sommerfield's family extends their heartfelt thank you to the community of Glenwood and the staff who did so much to make the day a wonderful tribute to Sue's dedication to service at her church. We'd thank everyone by name; but so very many of you were involved, and we don't want to accidentally leave out anyone. In Romans 12:13 it is written: Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. And that, you all did. She planned the Service, and you made it deeply meaningful. We so appreciated hearing the stories you shared. And we were sure she'd be happy with the luncheon! The beauty and warmth of Glenwood's Memorial Service for Sue will long be remembered by us, and by all who attended. To my church family, Oh, how grateful I was for the cards and I did so enjoy the visits, especially Pastor Chris who gave me communion. We had conversations that probably never would have happened had I not been in the hospital. He s a keeper! With the TLC my daughter and her hubby are giving me, I m on the road to recovery. Thank you, God! Esther Rochte If you d like to send Esther a note, her address currently is W. Diane Dr., Camden MI KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS We thank those who have designated Glenwood as the recipient of their Kroger Community Reward points. We received a check for $ for this past quarter. Thank you! In Christ, George and Vivienne Somerfield Matt and Tara Sommerfield, Nora and Anne David and Kristen Wells
