Exodus 12:14 In the Old Testament God commanded the Hebrew people to celebrate certain religious festivals. Today, Christians celebrate religious festivals that are meaningful for us -- especially the birth of our Savior Jesus and His resurrection! Celebrating the birth, life and resurrection of our Lord and Savior is the right thing to do -- it is pleasing to the Lord! 2 2 Treasurer s Report (October 2017) Bonnie Schmidt, Church Treasurer General Operating Fund Beginning Balance $ Offerings/Income $ 12, Expenses $ 11, Ending Balance $ 1, Apportionments Owed $ 8, Paid out of Pooled Funds $ Christmas Program and Pot-Luck Planned for December 17th Everyone is invited to join us on Sunday, December 17th at 10:30 a.m. for our 2017 Sunday School Christmas Program. This year each Sunday School Class (children and adult) will be adding their own creative element to our program. Classes will share songs, readings, skits and more! We know you will be blessed by the effort of our Sunday School department to make Christmas come alive for you this year! Following the Christmas Program we will have a Christmas Pot-luck dinner for all. Everyone is invited to share a dish or two and enjoy the Christian fellowship! Since December is full of family gatherings, there will be no Lunch Bunch in December. We hope you will join us next time we get together! Watch your monthly newsletter for details! Youth News Youth Director - Elizabeth West emm.west17@gmail.com Youth group has recently started an 8 week study session. The kids have chosen the study, God Is from the the YouVersion Bible app. We also plan to celebrate Jesus birthday with re-reading some of our favorite stories and some treats. For our outing this month, we have not discussed what we will do yet, but I believe we are leaning towards going to go see the Christmas comedy The Star, which tells the about the birth of Christ from the animals perspective. Youth Group is for all Jr. & Sr. High age youth. Plans are to meet on Friday evenings at 6:00 p.m.! Hope to see you! Small Groups Men s Accountability Group 7 p.m. Tuesday evening in the Ministry House (108 N. Henderson St.). Mid-Week Bible Study 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Pat Brown s house (506 W. 4 The Best Is Yet to Come author unknown 4 There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things in order, she contacted her Pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. "There's one more thing," she said excitedly.. "What's that?" came the Pastor's reply. "This is very important," the young woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand." The Pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. "That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the Pastor. The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, "Keep your fork." It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!" "So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder... "what's with the fork?" Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork... the best is yet to come." The Pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. 0ver and over, the Pastor heard the question, "what's with the fork?" And over and over he smiled. During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come. --Shared in memory of Jim Ovall, who always kept a fork in his pocket!!

5 Operation Christmas Child Thank You! Dear Operation Christmas Child Project Leaders, Pastors and Friends, What a great National Collection Week we have had! Mary and Larry Meaker and their hardworking crew report that the number of shoebox gifts brought to the LaFayette Drop-Off Center this year totals more boxes than last year and our second-highest total ever! These have been taken to the Peoria Collection Center and are headed to the Minneapolis Processing Center. If you used Follow Your Box, be watching your (and sometimes the Junk folder) over the next couple of weeks for the destination of YOUR boxes. THANK YOU to all of you for your hard work on this important project AND to Joe Orwig of Toulon, who loaned us the use of a bigger trailer to transport boxes to Peoria. If you know of shoeboxes that didn t get turned in, they can be mailed to Samaritan s Purse PO Box 3000 Boone, NC If you know people who forgot or didn t get around to filling their shoeboxes, they can still go to samaritanspurse.org and select Build a Shoebox Online. How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on. Birthdays are good for you; the more you have, the longer you live. Happiness comes through doors you didn't even know you left open. Ever notice that the people who are late are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them? You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened. We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors... but they all exist very nicely in the same box. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. Working for God on earth does not pay much, But His Retirement plan is Out of this world! from Toulon United Methodist Church 5
