2 STEWARDSHIP + OFFERTORY Offertory Week #19 $11,666 Online $1,874 Total $13,540 Weekly Budget (Week # 19) $9,077 Difference $4,463 Capital Improvement $1,302 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 12, 2017 Wisdom 6: Thessalonians 4:13-18 [13-14] Matthew 25:1-13 A Word from our Pastor Today s parable tells us about the ten virgins awaiting the bridegroom. It tells us that 5 are prepared for the wait and 5 were not. This is a very different story than we have heard in these last few weeks as Jesus has challenged the leaders of His time about who will enter the Kingdom of God. Usually there has been reversal in Jesus stories meaning that those who thought they were good for the kingdom are not and others are. In this parable the focus is the preparation and the lamp that keeps burning until He comes. The parable challenges us to be focused and yet patient. We need to be conscious that His kingdom can break open at any hour and in the unexpected experiences. We will most likely be surprised. So how ready are we? The image of the first reading is powerful as we hear that Wisdom is looking for a places to settle. She, Wisdom, is looking for those who know Her and in solitude comes to be with them. To know God to be open to God and to accept the gift of God with us. Knowing that we must be lights or lanterns for His presence we must rekindle that flame. May He find our fires burning from within as we anticipate God s presence. Thirsting for His presence, Fr. Carroll SECOND COLLECTION - Next week, our second collection will be for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Over 46 million people in the United States live in poverty. This collection supports programs to Empower people to identify and address the obstacles they face as they work to lift themselves out of poverty. By supporting this collection you give people a hand up, not a hand out. Learn more about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development at collection. THANKSGIVING DAY MASS - We will have one Mass on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 23rd at 9:00 a.m. At this Mass, all parish families are asked to bring canned food items and other non perishable items such as peanut butter, jelly, tuna, crackers, cereal, mac & cheese, bottled juice, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, small tooth paste, tooth brushes, dish detergent, laundry detergent, etc. to be presented at the offertory of the Mass. The foods will be distributed by our parish St. Vincent depaul Society to the needy. Blessed bread will be given to all families at the end of Mass to be served at your Thanksgiving table. If you are unable to attend mass on Thanksgiving day, you can participate by placing a monetary donation or grocery card in a poor box envelope. The poor box envelopes can be found inside the entrance doors or at the poor boxes on either side of the altar. Please place your envelope in the collection basket. Through Sunday, December 10 th the Christmas tree in church will be decorated with ornaments carrying gift ideas for those less fortunate. Your kindness and generosity to others this holiday season is greatly appreciated. Please select an ornament and keep the ornament for your tree. After all Masses on Sunday, December 10th, place the gift, with the tag TAPED TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE GIFT, under the tree. 3 On October 26, St. Elizabeth School was pleased to host a visiting priest from Guatemala, Padre Rigoberto. Padre visited Mrs. Mijlin s upper school Spanish classes. Padre does not speak English so he spoke entirely in Spanish. Students and were able to pick out vocabulary they had already learned while Mrs. Mijlin and his interpreter helped translate their questions for Padre. Padre recounted the life of his parishioners. Guatemala is separated into two classes, the wealthy and the poor. The poor is further divided into two categories, the poor, and the exceedingly poor. The average parishioner earns $4 a day, and families live in tiny homes where 6-8 people eat and sleep. Over a 1000 of these homes were destroyed when an earthquake hit this past September. Many of the villagers work in the coffee plantations. Padre explained how coffee grows as a red berry, and after picking, a green seed is harvested and later roasted to extract the color and flavor we see when we drink coffee. Coffee is harvested by hand, and workers carry it in sacks to local processing plants where they are paid based on the weight of their harvest. Many of the workers migrate from the mountains on a seasonal basis to pick the coffee berries. Other villagers make a living by weaving beautiful textiles by hand. All of the materials are taken from sheep, bamboo and cotton, and woven on looms into beautiful items. Many of these items were passed around and the students had a chance to feel how soft and beautiful they are in person. Other parishioners are farmers tending to animals and growing maiz (corn), the primary food source. Padre explained how farming prevents children from going to school, as they have to tend to the animals and crops in the field. When Padre was only 8, he was responsible for 50 sheep. While he did not attend school, he did learn how to read. He received his calling to become a priest when he was 12 years old. ST. VINCENT DEPAUL & OUTREACH (302) Parish families can leave a confidential message requesting assistance. Please leave message with name, contact number and best time to return the call. Remember our parish Poor Boxes - located at each entrance. Collection benefits the work of our St. Vincent DePaul Society. Please use small envelopes and place them in the collection for the time being as we better secure the boxes. VIKING VOCATIONS VOCATION REFLECTION - Today s first reading reminds us that wisdom is readily perceived by those who love her and found by those who seek her. God s wisdom for us includes our individual vocation, that unique plan God has for each of us to participate in His work. Like wisdom, God s call is readily perceived and found by those who put time and effort into discerning it. What steps are you taking to discern your vocation? Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations ( ; vocations@cdow.org). Be sure to visit our website: MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE CORNER MARRIAGE MOMENTS Whoever seeks Wisdom shall quickly be free from care. (Wisdom 6:15) Besides marrying you, what is a wise thing your beloved recently did or said? PARENTING POINTERS Even with natural talent, it takes work to develop it. Help your child identify one talent this week, and one way they can improve it. Often this includes the P word - Practice. (Mt 25:14-30) BRING IT HOME - Jesus parable this week emphasizes that one must be prepared. We may not know the day or the hour of His return, but we should be ready for it at all times. Imagine all the preparation needed before you go on a vacation. Reservations need to be made, bags packed, and finances set aside. Are you making the same effort in preparing to meet Jesus? What must you do in order to be ready? Are you preparing yourself now, or do you find yourself procrastinating? Heed the warning this parable provides, do not wait any longer, and prepare yourself now. Christ is waiting to receive each of us with open arms. GOOD NEWS - You are invited to listen to the Catholic Forum podcast. A new podcast is posted every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at cdow.org/communications or search Catholic Forum on Apple Podcasts or iheartradio podcasts.
