2 A Word from our Pastor Thank you for all who participated and supported the activity of this last week. Fall always offers times to gather the community. The Christmas Bazaar was a nice success in many ways but especially for the quality time it created for our family. The Gospel at the end of this liturgical journey offers us the challenge not only to use what God has opened up for us but to multiply it. The parable of the talents offers the challenging words: those who have more will be asked for more. So many give witness to that reality. In many venues and certainly in our parish and school it has been said that the same people always come through and make it happen. Sometimes those go-to-people get burnt out. It is important to keep a perspective in all that we do. If you give of your time as a volunteer it is important to pray and be reminded why you do what you do. If we are not grounded in the joy of the gospel and the energy we get in relationship to Jesus Christ, it is easy to feel burdened or taken advantage of by others. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, may we be mindful of the ways that we have served and how others have served us. May our hearts be grateful for receiving but also for being able to give. For we find a basis for human dignity when we feel that we contribute and in that add more. God s blessings on our family and yours! Fr. Carroll 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 19, 2017 Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, Thessalonians 5:1-6 Matthew 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21] STEWARDSHIP + OFFERTORY Offertory Week #20 $5,480 Online $1,265 Total $6,745 Weekly Budget (Week # 20) $9,077 Difference ($ 2,332) SECOND COLLECTION - Please be generous in this week s second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in six people lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at collection. THANKSGIVING DAY MASS - We will have one Mass on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 23rd at 9:00 a.m. At this Mass, all parish families are asked to bring canned food items and other non perishable items such as peanut butter, jelly, tuna, crackers, cereal, mac & cheese, bottled juice, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, small tooth paste, tooth brushes, dish detergent, laundry detergent, etc. to be presented at the offertory of the Mass. The foods will be distributed by our parish St. Vincent depaul Society to the needy. Blessed bread will be given to all families at the end of Mass to be served at your Thanksgiving table. If you are unable to attend mass on Thanksgiving day, you can participate by placing a monetary donation or grocery card in a poor box envelope. The poor box envelopes can be found inside the entrance doors or at the poor boxes on either side of the altar. Please place your envelope in the collection basket. Through Sunday, December 10 th the Christmas tree in church will be decorated with ornaments carrying gift ideas for those less fortunate. Your kindness and generosity to others this holiday season is greatly appreciated. Please select an ornament and keep the ornament for your tree. VINCENT DEPAUL & OUTREACH (302) Parish families can leave a confidential message requesting assistance. Please leave message with name, contact number and best time to return the call. Remember our parish Poor Boxes - located at each entrance. Collection benefits the work of our St. Vincent DePaul Society. Please use small envelopes and place them in the collection for the time being as we better secure the boxes. VIKING VOCATIONS VOCATION REFLECTION - The parable in today s gospel reading reminds us that, in the use of our gifts, we re accountable to the One who is the Author of those gifts, the One who is the Author of life itself. If you think God might be calling you to use your gifts as a priest, deacon, religious sister or religious brother, call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations ( ; vocations@cdow.org). Be sure to visit our website: St Elizabeth s Sodality will be joining the rosary group after the first Saturday 8:30 a.m. Mass on December 2, Please join them for the rosary and coffee and donuts afterwards. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE CORNER MARRIAGE MOMENTS When one finds a worthy wife [husband] their value is far beyond pearls [money]. (Proverbs 31:10) Although this scripture traditionally refers to wives, it works equally well for husbands. Pause for a moment and ponder the worth of your beloved. PARENTING POINTERS Once Thanksgiving is over, let the shopping begin! Or must it? The Friday after Thanksgiving is often called Black Friday - the day stores start to make a profit. Buying gifts isn t inherently bad, but giving an experience is often more memorable. Why not stay home and play a game. BRING IT HOME - We are reminded this week of the responsibility we have to utilize the gifts we are given. Each one of us has been blessed with gifts from the Lord. Are you utilizing these gifts to their full potential? We are reminded that when we embrace these gifts, and utilize them, they will flourish. How are you utilizing your gifts for God s glory? Take a moment to reflect on the skills and talents you have? How can these gifts be utilized for the Church? Do you have a beautiful voice, consider joining the choir? Skilled at teaching, catechists are always needed to teach religious education. Do not let your gifts and talents be wasted, embrace them and utilize them for the glory of God. GOOD NEWS - You are invited to listen to the Catholic Forum podcast. A new podcast is posted every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at cdow.org/communications. Next Sunday, November 26th, advent activities for the entire family will be presented.
