2 There is a lot of division and anger in our country lately about what it means to be an American. People disagree over showing respect for our country, our rights as citizens, and which laws protect the rights of some while endangering the dignity of others. On social media, I ve read of people using this Gospel as an argument for patriotism, that the law of the land should be respected, even if it means ignoring the respect and dignity of the human person. For help understanding this Gospel, I turned to the New Collegeville Bible Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew. This is the first of four more controversies between Jesus and the religious leaders. Their flattering words (v. 16) are true but insincere, as they proceed to lay a deliberate trap (v. 15). The question is a sticky one. Since the Roman occupation of Palestine in 63 B.C., Jews were obliged to pay tribute, or a head tax, in Roman coinage, on each man, woman, and slave. If Jesus opposes this payment, he would be advocating revolt against Rome. If he advocates payment, then he would be seen as a collaborator with the enemy. Jesus sees the malice and hypocrisy of his questioners, who have set this trap (v. 18). His clever response can be understood in one of three ways: (1) one should pay nothing to Caesar because everything belongs to God (Lev 25:23); (2) one should pay the emperor because he is God s representative (as Rom 13:1-7, 1 Pet 2:13-17); (3) one can pay Caesar but recognize that his authority is relative and that loyalty to God takes precedence. The last is the most likely meaning. What does this mean for us today? Jesus asks the religious leaders whose image is on the Roman coin. Whose image are we called to reflect? We are all made in the image and likeness of God. It s important that we remember that as Christians we are called to be the face of Christ to others. Sometimes there will be conflicting values between being a good American and being a follower of Christ. In those times, we must acknowledge God s authority over all others. If we blindly follow patriotism without questioning, then we run the risk of worshipping idols. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us, to show us where we need to change, so we can more closely reflect God s image in our world, acknowledging his authority over all. - Sandy Schrader, Director of Religious Education

This year, the patients have requested $20 prepaid phone cards, men s and women s watches, headphones (no metal), earbuds, sunglasses, and ball caps. In the past, many people have had difficulty finding the phone cards specified by the hospital. To make it easier this year, the hospital has a contact who can add dollars to phone cards. On the phone card gift tags, we will add an envelope where you can either put $20 cash or a check made payable to St. Louis de Montfort with Giving Tree in the memo field. We will then contact the hospital to have them make the appropriate number of phone cards. The Giving Tree will be in the narthex the weekend of November 4th and 5th. Please take a gift request tag from the tree and return the gift to church either wrapped or unwrapped by Monday, November 20th for pick up by hospital employees. Thanks in advance for your continued support of this project. The patients count on us, as this is the 30th year SLDM has supported this project.
