2 Religious Education Dear Friends, Today is catechetical Sunday, that day of the year when we celebrate and pray for the Church s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. We especially pray for and bless catechists, whose mission is to teach the young of our parish. This year s theme is Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ. Please say a special prayer today for those generous volunteers who teach our children! Our religious education year starts NEXT SUNDAY, September 23 rd, at 10am with Family Day in the Family Center hall. Parents and students all together for prayer and a special project, and then an opportunity to meet the catechists. If you have not already registered your children, forms are available on the parish website under Religious Education. We are still in need of several classroom assistants. Peace and every blessing, Eva Medal of Merit Award Mary Beth Russell, active parishioner and Parish Council Executive Officer, will receive this award on September 23 rd at 3 p.m., at a prayer service at Joseph Church, Middletown by Bishop W. Francis Malooly. This award is at the recommendation of the Pastor and is given for outstanding and faithful service to the parish and the diocese. All are welcome to attend. Congratulations Mary Beth! In today s first reading, the prophet Isaiah says, The Lord God opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. Please pray for our seminarians, that as they work through the sometimes difficult and strenuous process of priestly formation, they may continue to experience God s call and keep their eyes on His plan for them. Annual Red Mass October 1 st The annual Red Mass, sponsored by the St. Thomas More Society, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1st at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Church. Bishop Malooly will preside. The Red Mass is celebrated for judges, prosecutors, attorneys, law school professors, students and government officials. During the Mass, prayers to the Holy Spirit for guidance are offered for all who seek justice. The St. Thomas More Society of the Diocese of Wilmington has sponsored the Red Mass annually since Contact Sara T. Toner, Esq. at or toner@rif.com. Annual Blue Mass October 5th Bishop Malooly invites you to the 2018 Diocese of Wilmington Blue Mass on Friday, October 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Elizabeth Church. The Blue Mass honors the local, county, state, and federal law enforcement, fire, emergency medical and military personnel who live and work in Delaware and on Maryland s Eastern Shore. Those currently serving, the retired, and their families are invited to attend. Pastor s Notes Listening & Responding There are three interwoven themes in today s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God s promptings will lead us in the right way. Up With People! This work of historical fiction expands on the traditions and turmoils of biblical women's society as told through the voice of Dinah, Jacob s only daughter. 5 The Music Corner The parish choir usually sings at the 10:30 AM Mass each week-end from September through May. This all-volunteer group performs a wonderful ministry for our parish by offering their gift of song to enhance our worship. The level of repertoire is substantial for a volunteer choir, and the members dedicate many hours to learning, praying, and presenting the works each week and at seasonal concerts. Our parish choir has been invited to sing at various diocesan celebrations and has made choir pilgrimages to Italy, Ireland, and as close as Williamsburg, Virginia, where they were featured most recently at Bruton Parish Church. Many parishioners in the pews enjoy the music and often ask the provenance of a particular piece sung by the choir. And so, each week, a brief explanation of selected choral works will be explained and featured in this Music Corner. Choral selection at 10:30 AM Mass for These Alone Are Enough by Dan Schutte was written in 2004 and is based on Suscipe, the prayer of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (October 23, 1491 July 31, 1556). The word, suscipe means receive and the prayer is: Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, All I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me. Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian, who founded the religious order called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Ignatius is remembered as a talented spiritual director. He recorded his method in a celebrated treatise called the Spiritual Exercises, first published in Adult Choir rehearsal are held on Thursdays at 7:15 p.m., in the church choir loft. Youth Choir, open to students grades 2-9, will meet at 6:15-7:00 p.m., on Thursdays in the Family Center.
