2 Camp. This year Selina acted as director of the camp and I was so impressed with her organizational and leadership skills. We are so blessed to have her take such an important role in Joyful Noise, especially when Belinda Karge started a new job at Concordia College in Irvin. Selina was there every day at camp and the younger staff really looked up to her maturity and spiritual depth. Pastor s Page 1 Thessalonians 5:12 Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. In the next two Pastor s Pages I will be introducing you to our newest staff members. In this issue I will share with you the life and qualifications of our Children and Youth minister, Selina Kaufman and in the next issue I will share with you what Ker Hyles brings to our office among other blessings. Selina is also in the midst of becoming a Recognized Youth Minister of Region 2 of the ELCA. She has completed 2 of the 4 tracks which are offered each summer. I was honored to have Selina complete her second track this summer which is the track I have taught for this training for the past 17 years. Selina impressed everyone at the training and I had several participants tell me how blessed our church must be to have her on staff. Selina Kaufman began her time at Carlton Hills as Selina Weber. She recently married Jason Kaufman and changed her name to Selina Kaufman. Selina came to our church when she was 16 years old through the encouragement and witness of Nicole Davidson, now Nicole Wentz. This was very near to when I first came to Carlton Hills as your pastor 11 years ago. Selina was a part of a high school youth confirmation class and was a part of the youth singing group called CHROSS which was the abbreviation for Carlton Hills Redeemed Outreach Singers. Bethany Timan our Financial Secretary and Katie Wentz who will soon have her second baby baptized at Carlton Hills were also a members of CHROS. Selina is only getting paid for 6 hours per week but she does so much more! With camp over she now is the driving force behind our Sunday School and our Tuesday evening children and youth events. Sunday School is no small effort and she is being mentored by Amanda Botzer who represents the church council in Parish Education and who has been organizing our Sunday School for the past several years. It was not long after Selina came to our church that her entire family started attending. Now her father Mike Weber is our photographer for the new directory, her mother Marie Weber coordinates our acolytes and her sister Emily Weber is active in the youth program. The Tuesday events include 4:30pm God s Gifts for children pre-k to 6th grade, a diner at 5:30pm and One Salvation for our youth at 7:00pm. While I am gone on Tuesdays Selina runs the entire time From the almost the beginning Selina was active in the summer Joyful Noise Music and Arts 2

3 of God s Gifts and when I do the classroom time for God s Gifts, Selina organizes a game time for the second half of the hour each week. The children love the game time and I must admit that game playing is not my strength. What a wonderful complement Selina is to my gifts and what a blessing she is to each of our children and youth. Soon Selina and her father Mike and sister Emily are going to Mexico to help build our third house through Lutheran Border Concerns and Selina is planning to attend another Youth ministry Training Retreat in November along with Bryce Taylor. Selina is in Child and Adolescent studies at Grossmont College and she has been active in the group seeking to bring a preschool to our church. This winter Selina is busy making preparations for a Children s Christmas Program. In both our new staff at Carlton Hills it is clear that the ministry of our church has improves by leaps and bounds. I am thrilled to add these quality leaders to our ministry. Please thank them when you see them!! As 1 Thessalonians instructs us: honor those who are your leaders in the Lord s work. 4 Emma Hustad Baptism Sunday, November 1 st St. Columba s Bible Study with Potluck St. Columba s has invited us to their weekly potluck and Bible Study. The Potluck Dinner is at their church beginning the first Wednesday in September. The Potluck Supper begins at 6:00pm and the Bible Study is at 7:00pm. The study is on the minor prophets. Come and enjoy! Everyone is welcome! Interfaith Ministry with St. Columba s Episcopal Church At 9720 Cuyamaca Street south of Mast on Cuyamaca Over the past few months Pastor Rick has been preaching weekly at St. Columba s Episcopal Church at 11:00am Sunday mornings. St. Columba s lost their priest to retirement and the ELCA is a full communion partner with the Episcopal church, which means among many things that they can share pastors. Pastor Rick has been spending 75% of his time at Carlton Hills and 25% of his time as Director of Youth Ministry Leadership for the Pacifica Synod. Next year the Pacifica Synod will elect a new bishop and it is possible that Pastor Rick will move that 25% of his work from the Pacifica Synod to St. Columba s. We have a year to prepare for that possibility. During the next year both churches are going to experiment with sharing the same pastor and a cooperative ministry. This would be a cooperation of ministry and not a merger. There would be two separate churches and one pastor. Both churches would remain separate, but they would also benefit from a close cooperation with the other. This could be a great new direction for our church and we have a year to explore the possibilities of sharing ministry and buildings with each other. Thanksgiving Eve Worship Wednesday, November 25th at 7:00pm Grief Support Group A grief support will meet Saturday, November 7 th at 10:00am at Norma Borgeson s at 2149 Hillslake Drive in El Cajon. It is a wonderful group and open to anyone who is suffering a loss. 5 Armor of God: Bible Boot Camp 2015 was a huge success! We are an intergenerational congregation. Just as every family benefits from the joy and wisdom of every age and stage, likewise our church is richer and more beautiful by the presence and intermingling of both young and old because the church-the body of Christ-transcends age. In the photo above C.J. Reid is the acolyte holding the bible for Pastor Rick to read the gospel. C.J. has grown up at Carlton Hills and is a beautiful example of our youth. Watch for Dudley Bread Sale right before Thanksgiving. Bread is $5 a loaf and pies $15. Blue Christmas Stephen Ministers will be hosting a Blue Christmas again this year on December 10th at 7:00 p.m. We realize that many face the season with sadness and pain. If you face the season with difficulty, we offer a service of understanding, love, compassion, and we pray, of healing. We cannot cure or take away those feelings, however, we will stand with you in an attempt to make this time easier to bear. We understand that all of us at one time or another go thru difficult periods of life that can be overwhelming. We hold out arms of love and hope in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Please accept our invitation of an evening of healing and fellowship. Pastor will lead the service, and Stephen Ministers will be available for individual prayer or conversation. As we light our blue candles together, we unite in God's gracious love. Please consider joining us on this special night. Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Acts Center. May God continue to bless each of us. In His name, Pastor Rick and Stephen Ministers Flowers Each Sunday Would you like to recognize a special event, such as a birthday or anniversary, or honor a loved one by having flowers placed on the altar of the church on Sundays? There is a sign-up calendar in the back of the church. Pick the Sunday or Sundays on which you would like flowers placed and print your name and phone number on the calendar. Call Jean Setzer at and tell her if you would like to have an arrangement for $20.00 or if you will bring your own arrangement. The bulletin will indicate that you have provided flowers for the occasion. 6
