2 more energized than feeling let down Youth group means a lot to me because the memorable moments I spend with the group gives me more passion and happiness in my life. I was baptized by Pastor Rick at Carlton Hills because it made me be more close to God and feeling more alive as a cherished human being. I want to be confirmed because this church makes me feel closer to God and Jesus. Pastor s Page John 15:4-5 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. It has been an honor for me to work with Garrett, Sheaelle Einfeldt and Robin Paulsen in confirmation. I love these verses! This is what the Christian faith is all about. It is not about how much we can do for God. It is about all that God can do through us! Sheaelle also came to our church through the Youth Ministry and the witness of one of our youth, Bryce Taylor. Sheaelle s brother Cullen was also baptized and confirmed at our church. Her mother Elle is a faithful member. Sheaelle wrote in her faith statement: We must abide in the vine which is Jesus. Apart from the vine we are like a branch of the vine that is cut off from the vine and withers and dies. But being connected to Jesus we are like the vine that bears wonderful and delicious fruit. I was baptized at Carlton Hills when I was 10 years old. My brother and I were baptized together. We were baptized because we wanted to get closer to God. Kim Taylor showed us this church. We went with Stephanie to One Salvation. I loved it because Stephanie was fun and I learned about God at the same time. Where do we bear fruit in our church? We bear fruit in our children and youth. Soon we are starting the 11th year of our Joyful Noise Music and Arts Camp. Over the years hundreds of children have been fed the love of Jesus through the labors of Belinda Karge and our youth staff who are trained and equipped with the love and spirit of Jesus. Robin Paulsen has been an amazing long-time member of our church. Robin has been our most faithful acolyte and has been the youngest youth singing in our choir. We have many youth who have joined the confirmation class because of this ministry. What a precious example of fruit bearing! Her Dad has been through years of severe health problems. Her Mom has been faithful to the choir and a communion assistant. Recently a 16 year old youth named Garrett Williams was baptized with many of his unchurched family and friends in attendance. What a joy!! Garrett will soon be confirmed at the June 7th worship service along with two others. Garrett in large part is also a product of our One Salvation youth led worship on Tuesday evenings. Garrett wanted to be baptized and confirmed because he wanted to be on our youth staff for this summer s Joyful Noise Camp and being confirmed is a requirement for all our youth staff. Here is what Garrett wrote about his faith: Robin writes in her faith statement: My faith came to be clear when my Dad became sick. Our family leaned on faith to get through rough and challenging times. I loved attending camps up at Luther Glen. I met a lot of amazing friends, that I still keep in contact with. I learned so much about God at these wonderful camps, I would come home refreshed after. My favorite Bible verse comes from Phil. 4:13: I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. These camps have given me a good foundation about what faith is all about and also thanks to Pastor Rick for helping me learn about my faith. I would Spiritual stuff that makes me the happiest in my life, makes me motivated enough to feel like a better person to improve my mind with feeling 2
3 like to thank Marvin, Lynn and the choir for accepting me, and welcoming me into the choir. Church Mailings Would you like to be included on the church list? 4 Interfaith Ministry with St. Columba s Episcopal Church Congregational Meeting Sunday, June 21st at 10:15am Agenda: Preschool Update Capital Improvements Office and Children s Ministry Assistant Verizon Update At 9720 Cuyamaca Street south of Mast on Cuyamaca Over the past few months Pastor Rick has been preaching weekly at St. Columba s Episcopal Church at 11:00am Sunday mornings. St. Columba s lost their priest to retirement and the ELCA is a full communion partner with the Episcopal church, which means among many things that they can share pastors. House Building in Mexico We are going back to Mexico to build a house for a needy family on Saturday, October 17th. Please consider going with us! You will need a passport and if you do not have one, now is the time to start the process of getting one. We will start the planning and fund raising in September. Pastor Rick has been spending 75% of his time at Carlton Hills and 25% of his time as Director of Youth Ministry Leadership for the Pacifica Synod. Next year the Pacifica Synod will elect a new bishop and it is possible that Pastor Rick will move that 25% of his work from the Pacifica Synod to St. Columba s. We have a year to prepare for that possibility. Dates to remember in June During the next year both churches are going to experiment with sharing the same pastor and a cooperative ministry. This would be a cooperation of ministry and not a merger. There would be two separate churches and one pastor. Both churches would remain separate, but they would also benefit from a close cooperation with the other. June 7th: Confirmation Sunday June th: Pastor Rick s 10th Anniversary Sunday June 21st: Father s Day Brunch and Cong. Mt. June 28th: Lynn Nickel Sunday Lynn Nickel retires as Organist On Sunday, June 28th Lynn Nickel who has been our organist for the past 7 years will retire. How blessed we have all been by her skill and her dedication to our church and our Lord. We owe her a great deal and we will honor Lynn and show her our gratitude for her service and inspiration. Please come and express your gratitude and best wishes. We experienced the first taste of combined worship opportunities during holy week this year. For Maundy Thursday and Good Friday both churches met at St.Columba s and we had wonderful attendance and meaningful and inspiring worship. There were 60 in attendance at both worship services which nicely filled St. Columba s. Grief Group Norma Borgeson and Pastor Rick are starting a grief group for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The group s first meeting will be Saturday, June 13th at 10:00am at Norma Borgeson s at Hillslake Drive in El Cajon. Norma can be reached at Anyone who has been through the pain of losing a loved one is welcome. Also Charlie Carlson s memorial service was at St. Columba s because the family requested a smaller worship space. The reception was at Carlton Hills but the memorial service was at St. Coumba s which is also air conditioned which gives a needed option in the summer months. Remember Jesus words: Bear one another s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. The only one who can truly understand the grief of losing someone they love is someone who also has gone through the same loss. This could be a great new direction for our church and we have a year to explore the possibilities of sharing ministry and buildings with each other. 4
5 Cursillo Weekend Pastor Ricks' 10th Annivessary! Four members of our congregation Heather Gasner, Erin Kole, Pam Meyers, and Dliedra Zeller experienced a Cursillo weekend at Camp Stevens outside Julian. This spirit filled journey was offered to 31 persons, both men and women. The weekend began on April 23rd in the evening. An inspiring closing ceremony on Sunday April 26th concluded the weekend. Those who attended heard witness to give them tools to bring Christ into all their worldly environments one person at a time. Through prayer some were touched by the Holy Spirit, many new things were experienced, and in addition the journey was filled with music and FUN. In celebration of Pastor Rick's 10 years as pastor of our church, there will be a catered lunch June th after the service. It would be nice if everyone attends to show our appreciation for Pastor Rick and all he has done for us this past decade. Greetings from Dorcas! Listed below is some of our upcoming events as well as our meeting dates. Please join us the 2nd Saturday of each 10:00 for our monthly meeting. As you can see, the only thing missing is you! Talk to the new Cursillista' to hear more about the next weekend in the fall. It is an experience that will stay with you a lifetime and enhance your walk with our Lord Jesus.
